What do you wish was socially acceptable?

I agree about alcohol. People try to tell me about all of these complex flavors from the brewing or the oak barrels or whatever, but it all tastes like lighter fluid to me.

Anyway, oddly enough my answer to this question BEFORE the pandemic would have been....mask wearing during cold and flu season. I hate being sick so I always wanted it to be socially acceptable to wear a mask in the winter in order to give myself a little bit more protection from those nasty droplets flying around, but I never did because wearing a mask in the US would make people look at you like you had two heads, or were carrying the bubonic plague. Never expected us to be in a position where the whole world was wearing masks! Be careful what you wish for I guess. :upsidedow

Yes on both counts!

Never thought of that, for me it's taste and culture.

Every time I've ever tried anything alcoholic it always tastes like.....alcohol and nothing else. And then people start with the "Oh it's brewed with cherries and chocolate and it's so smooth...."....well i don't taste anything but alcohol, and that tastes awful.

But the culture......I cannot understand for the life of me why it is an excuse for the behavior of some people. Sorry, I still hold people responsible for their actions regard of what they're consuming.

Just don't get it.

I don't get it either. I like a few things but very few. I agree with the culture , drives me nuts the thinking that you can't wind down and relax with out a glass of wine or can of beer, especially other moms . There the kids are so hard they need alchohol to survive.

I don't care if someone like the way it tastes and chooses to drink it but its the way of thinking behind it that confuses me.

Wearing shorts all winter.
It is 10 degrees outside but I have the woodstove cranking so I wear shorts and flip flops.
My visitors look at me like I am the crazy lady!
I live in MN, I see people in shorts plenty of times in the winter. Personally I think it's insane LOL, but it's not unusual here.

Open discussions about salary and income. I would never get upset at a coworker for making more than I am, that idea is a myth IMO, but it helps workers to know what workers in the same position are making.
Yes & No. I do payroll. In my previous employment it was very obvious what body part you needed to make more money. It also gives insight into what your employer deems important and it is rarely what you think.

Wouldn't workers knowing the payroll and being able to have frank discussions help workers and even employers? That way everyone is clear on the expectation and the path of upward mobility?

I would never be upset at a coworker making more than I do- however I might have strong thoughts about if the company values me and what I bring.

Having clear expectations on the path of upward mobility is not the same as having open frank discussion on employee compensation.

I have no problem with other employees making more than I do, as long as it is justified by tenure, skill or position and not like my former employer (by sex).

Yes but if you were being paid unfairly you wouldn’t be upset at your coworker. I assume you would be upset at your company and /or boss which is how it should be.

Transparency of salary makes it easy to know if people are being paid fairly based on things like tenure, skill, etc. vs sex or other discrimination.

I agree somewhat about the alcohol. I do like to have a couple of beers very rarely, or a single Pina Colada or Bloody Mary at the casino or whatever. But when I'm out I usually have one and then switch to water. It annoys me no end when people harangue me about it. "Oh, have a drink, loosen up!" I don't need to loosen up, I'm fine. I've been stonking drunk on a few occasions, it has *always* ended with some embarrassing story to tell and I don't like the way it makes my head spin. And I don't like waking up the next day feeling like I ate a bag of cotton balls while simultaneously smacking myself in the head with a rock the night before.

Wearing the same style or exactly the same (CLEAN!) clothes daily. Millionaires/Billionaires like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg etc. get away with it because people know they probably have dozens of sets of them and have people do their laundry.....plus it's one less thing to worry about when they have so many other things on their minds.

The rest of us would be judged harshly for doing the same, with people wondering if you're poor, unclean, etc.

It kind of made me wonder what era it was where this began? mid 1800's? before that? just made me curious in general

It's starting to slowly but joint decisions on rings. When people see my ring they say "oh he did well".....I gently say "oh we picked it out together"

....tell you what I saw on the sidelines of the Buffalo Bills sunday night.....we are still have a discussion if it is socially approiate.....In my observation it is awe inspiring

Also, speaking frankly about how hard parenting is, and not judging moms for not loving every second of motherhood. It should be perfectly acceptable to say my kid is being a butthole today, bc let’s face it. Sometimes kids just suck. Doesn’t mean we don’t love them with every fiber of our being, but it’s perfectly normal to not love being a parent every second of every day.
