My DS has had a cough for three days it just wont stop. Doctor is closed today. I have giving him Delysum and Vicks steam, Ran the shower and had him sit there for a while. I have giving him Dimetapp. Nothing is working.

Any suggestions would be great. Thank you :goodvibes

I don't remember where i read it, and I didn't believe it when I read it, but I was desperate. I had read somewhere to put vicks vapo rub on your feet and put socks on, please don't laugh but it worked. Of course I was laying down, but it worked.

is it a cough from sinus drainage? if so, allergy meds work for my son.

a cough is going around my boys' school. they are asking that kids w/ coughs stay home. half my son's class has been out, and a third of the other's. it's a lot upper resp. stuff - bronchitis, strep, fever, and flu.... mine has a sinus infection and some other bug. the other is healthy as a horse.

Coughing is the lungs way to clear mucus. Give him LOTS of fluids to keep mucus thin so it can be expelled from the body easier.

The last time my DD was at the dr. for a bad cough, this is what they told her to do...I was like, seriously? We did it~ did it work? Eh, she still coughed some, but it did seem a little better. :confused3

There is definitely a lot going around. Both of my children have had a cough for over a week. Both went to the dr's...just a virus. Nothing they can do. Unfortunately, sometimes it just has to take it's course. My children have a cool mist humidifier. That helps some as well as Vicks. Both are on plenty of clear liquids. Stay away from milk and milk products as this makes the mucus worse whereas the clear liquids thin it out. You can also use saline nasal drops to dry up some of the secretions. Good luck.

the only thing that ever works that I have seen is Coedine, but it has to be prescribed by law and dose needs to be watched carefully, especially for a kid. I only give it at night if my child isn't sleeping and I always follow up with a Dr visit because it can lead to Pneumonia. Going from freezing cold air to a steam shower in10 minute increments is the only non prescription thing I know of that helps. Be careful with the rubs because a child who is having trouble breathing could be made worse by any fragrances, out of the question for bronchitis or Ashmatics. Check out this article

For myself I swear by Mucinex....and I just saw recently a kids Mucinex which I will buy if one of mine gets a cough.

We do this for our DD and DS. It works for them.

Just wanted to say that I have asthma and Vicks helps a lot. Dr recommends it as well. Tylenol with Codeine is an antibiotic and as such will only work if the cough is caused by bacteria, not virus. Just had bacterial pnemonia last week so I've been on some good stuff.

I have tried a lot of the OTC and Mucinex does seem to work the best at controlling symptoms.

My Dh who is an MD says I am crazy, but I always put Vicks on my feet with socks and snooze away!!! Works like a charm!!!

He often laughs at my "voodoo" medicine but then he enjoys a night of sleep without me coughing!!!

Coedine is a central nervous system depressant, it's a potent drug that shuts off the urge to cough regardless of the cause with no effect at all on bacteria or virus or asthma... It won't help the cause no matter what it is.

Learn something new every day. I guess that's why they always give me the Tylenol with codeine cough syrup?? I just assumed it was an antibiotic since they only give it to me when I have a bacterial infection. Good to know.

My son had a horrible cough and it turned out to be asthma caused by a cold virus. He has never had asthma (and he's 12) before so I was shocked. No wonder nothing I gave him was working! He needed steroids and breathing treatments. His was a deep barking type of chest cough. Hope your DS gets to feeling better.

My DS11 had this type of asthma when he was an infant until around the age of 6. He outgrew it. They called it Reactive Airway Disease. Even now, if he has a bad cold, the cough is always really bad, especially at night when he is laying down. The only thing that helps is breathing treatments or an inhaler.
