It occured to me tonight that we need to have something to look forward to after we drop DD18 off at college in August. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a hard time with it, so it would be a little mental health insurance if we have something planned immediately after. DH had a brilliant idea--why not go to WDW for a couple days? DDs going to college in Valdosta, GA, which is right on I-75 about 15 miles from the Florida line. We could drive her and her stuff down there, get her moved in and when she's ready for us to go(which I anticipate will be about 3.5 minutes after her bags get inside her room) it would only be about a 3-4 hour drive on to WDW.

Move-in days are Aug 10 & 11. I have to start school Aug 15. So the trip would have to be a very fast one, only a couple days. Of course, it's gonna be August, so maybe we need to rethink Disney altogether. But I was thinking that with just the two of us, we could take it pretty easy so we won't die from a heat stroke.

Sounds like an excellent idea :thumbsup2
I (living in the northeast) dropped my DS off freshmen year and cried the whole weekend. You have a much better plan :worship:

Now that he is graduated and living on hs own and our other DS is living on his own as well, I have told DH that a Disney trip had better be planned and purchased if they ever say they are not coming home for Thanksgiving or Christmas, because if he thought I was a wreck for a weekend after leaving DS at college, he 'aint seen nothin' compared to a holiday with no kids! :rotfl2:

To make the trip a bit cheaper, you could always go over to Seaworld. They have the buy 1 day and come back the second day free. Since it's much smaller, you can get every thing done, and you won't have that hankering for missing Disney and your daughter when you get back home.

That just sounds too convenient to pass up, you should do it.

Best wishes to your daughter. :goodvibes

Sounds great. you /your family have been through so much. take some time and relax. have a great trip. congrats to your DD.

You made me laugh at the 3.5 minutes after remark, at least you weren't going to do the old tuck and roll method of dropping her off.:rotfl2:

I just remember how it was when my parents dropped me off, out in the middle of nowhere Alabama. I was so glad to get away from home, I would have gladly let them do a slow drive-by with the back door of the van propped open--just dump my stuff over there in a grass, okay? I'll take it from here.

I just anticipate some major tears for me. DD will be fine and we probably won't hear from her until mid-September, at least. :hippie:

Last year DD (then 18) turned around and said "Don't you guys have a long drive home" after we loaded up her dorm room.

WDW sounds like a plan-even if you don't do the parks - do a day at Typhoon Lagoon and Downtown Disney stuff.

I think you should definitely do it. By the time you drive away from the school, you will be an emotional wreck. A trip to WDW, however brief, will occupy your mind, and keep the urge to call and check on her ten times in check.
I like your DH's idea, I'm wondering if I can modify it to fit the area of the country where we'll be dropping off our son. Thanks for posting it:thumbsup2

I think it is a great idea. She may what you to stay a bit longer and make her bed and stuff though :lmao:. They had some activities planned for parents when we dropped DS18 off last year so look into that before you make hotel plans in Orlando. The other nice thing is that you can swing back through her new town if she needs you to pick up something she forgot :thumbsup2.

Do it!! Sounds fun and... therapeutic..

sounds like a great plan!!

you could also do a trip closer to where you'll be dropping her off to have a little more time there... a barrier island on the coast of Georgia, St. Augustine, Destin/panhandle area... or something that's on your way back home.

have fun no matter what you decide to do :)

You should totally do it. While we have a wonderful time at WDW with the kids some of DH and my favorite memories are of those short trips when it was just us.

Definitely you should go from it - it won't be a bad drive from Valdosta at all!

Go for it! That sounds like a great idea!
We plan on doing the same thing when my younger DD goes to college next year. :)

If you can stand the heat of Aug in Fl (I wouldn't be able to!) more power to you! If not, I love a pp's idea of one of the local island areas, much more relaxing and cool. A beach chair, umbrella, fruity cocktail, ocean breeze....oh yeah. :thumbsup2

Both times we've done a drop off, though, the colleges had a full day planned out, including a ceremony of some sort (blanking on the name, like a baccalaureate) and a picnic at 5. It would have been difficult to skip out.

We're taking our last to college this summer and I like your idea of planning something to ease the blow!

Go, Minky, go! After everything you've been through in the past year or so, you deserve a trip to WDW. Plan yourselves a nice, relaxing and fun trip. It will give you something to look forward to. Do it! Do it!:goodvibes

Oh, I didn't think about that. When i went to college you just moved your stuff in and went to the dining hall for lunch. I guess we'll need to keep a flexible plan, at least until we hear more from the college.
