What do you think of this wedding gift?

The daughter of some close friends is getting married, and we budgeted $100 for a wedding present, but instead of just putting $100 in an envelope, my DH and I decided to purchase a $100 gift card for Groupon and give that to them. The couple will be living in Pittsburgh, which is a Groupon town, and I thought it would be a fun way to encourage them to enjoy themselves with the $100 (and they'll get at least $200 worth of value for using it, because of how Groupon works). They have very few items on their registry, and have been living together for about a year, and are both in graduate school (both had full ride scholarships to undergrad and grad, so no student debt, thankfully!).

What do you think - does this sound like a fun gift?

Personally, I would not enjoy that gift. I would rather have the money to do what I want.

I do not care for groupon.

While it is nice for them to double their money, I find Groupon to be mostly useless. I've only used one deal ever and they put a lot of limitations on most of their deals. Such as "pay us $15 for a $30 gift certificate, but you have to spend at least $50 in our restaurant to use this deal".

While I think your heart is in the right place, the practicality of the gift is kind of lacking. But a gift is a gift, so I am sure they will be grateful. It just might not work well for them, but ya never know...they might like it.

I kind of have to vote with just giving them the cash, or buying something from the registry. However, I'm also in my 40's and a little technology challenged, so I'm slow to adopt to online things like Groupon.

I doubt that you will have the same issue as Groupon is pretty big and popular, but years ago DH bought a $100 gift card to an all inclusive web-store that could be used to purchase almost anything. It was very popular at the time and many people loved it. Within weeks the company closed up and all gift cards were null & void. We were out the money, sorry no recourse.

As I said with Groupon you most likey would not have that problem.

If I had to vote I would either give the cash, or purchase a beautiful picture frame (as keepsake) and put the $100 in the frame.

I LOVE that idea of the frame with the cash!!!

I would not use Groupon either-- I just wouldn't trust it.

I'd give the cash. While I've been very happy with the Groupons I've used I just think as a gift it would be better to do cash.

If you're trying to introduce them to fun things in their new city, maybe a gift card to a restaurant for $50 and $50 cash?

I'm going to be the odd man out. I would love a $100 groupon gift card, BUT I use groupon ALL the time. Could you possibly find out if they use it?

I wouldn't love that as a gift, but I would never let you know that. Cash would be better in my opinion.
:goodvibes

I like the gift card idea someone mentioned earlier, one of the best gifts my husband and I got for Chrismas one year was a $50 gift card to the movies and another $50 gift card to go out to eat, Chili's is one of our favorite places to eat. I keep hoping we'll get it again but last year we got a nice vacuum cleaner, which was just as welcome a gift for us lol. Hope that helps.

I would have been frustrated with that gift. Grateful, yes, but frustrated. Cash is easier and they can use it to buy their own Groupon if they so choose.

If you want your gift to be used for something fun in their new city then I would suggest a gift card to do something fun. A cool or popular restaurant, an upcoming event you know they'd like, whatever. Or I would just give them cash. I wouldn't want a Groupon gc. I'm in the camp that they come with a lot of restrictions and are a bit of a hassle. I know one person who is an avid Grouponer and she's the only one that I would give this gift to because I know that she'd be thrilled.

I have to agree. I like Groupon and use it from time to time, but I wouldn't give it as a gift or want it as a gift.

If you've already done it, so be it, but if you haven't, I might rethink it. :flower3:

cash, no groupon for me either. I don't think I'd use it.
