What do you think of this costume...for an 11 year old?

Well I am not offended by it but I would think that the parents were morons with no morals to even think that was okay for a child.

:sad2:

Lordy...my kid had that same costume at that age. It was the way the black guys dressed in the 70's-simply that-a cool dude.

i didnt think it was a literal pimp costume-a person who kept a stable of prostitutes.

I never realized there were so many uptight people on the Dis.:confused3

well, the ones they sell at the stores around here literaly say 'pimp' on the box so it's no leap to assume that's what the costume is.

i don't consider myself uptight, but i have to say i would have preferred not to have had this particular costume marketed to realy young kids so i would'nt have had to explain to my son (who saw these in between the disney and the ninja costumes) what pimp means. i guess fortunatly for me the companion 'ho' costumes were out of stock in his size range (but they had plenty in the tween section:sad2: and boxed 'couples' sets in the family aisle:sad2::sad2::sad2:).

"Pimp" is not meaning pimp with a stable. It is more of term that is synonomous with "cool". Like an urban term.

Haven't you ever seen "Pimp My Ride"?:lmao:

Go ahead and call me a prude - interesting how "Pimp" has a different meaning to this new generation -

Pimp my ride

as well as the Academy Awards...

"It's Hard out Here for a Pimp"

So does that mean "going along with it" denotes that we condone it?

when they are marketing the costume in only the boy's section and the 'couple' costume in the girl's section is labled 'ho' the use of the term is absolutly the traditional (unless i'm mistaken and the 'ho' costume makes the girl look like a gardening tool and the inference is that the boy will be 'pimping' out his tractors:rolleyes:).

the funny thing (to me) is that when i worked in a very drug infested, prostitute laden neighborhood the actual 'pimps' never referred to themselves as 'pimps'-the were 'general contractors' and their girls were called 'my sub contractors', the drug dealers referred to themselves as 'independant contractors' (or at least that's what they put on their public assistance applications-and 'yes' we did have people report their earnings from it-i had one 'lady' who would send in several peices of binder paper each month that would list first names, a date, and the amount she earned 'subcontracting':scared1:).

Exactly! (Though the mental images are hilarious.:rotfl:)

Ridiculous with all the choices out there for costumes a parent would approve a "pimp" costume. Pimp at 11, maybe a terrorist or drug dealer at 12?

Just because something is available doesn't mean it should be purchased. Sending the right message to a child or the children he will be with on that day should be priority.

I don't think it would bother me - I see a few every year in the school's parade. And there are always a few mobsters in every single class, starting in preschool. Is that any better? :confused3 Dd6 told me she wants to be a dead angel next year (probably because ds12 is a dead golfer this year).

Pimp costume on Halloween? Nah, wouldn't bother me. Silly holiday, silly costumes......

Now if my kid wanted to dress up like a pimp the other 364 days of the year.....or aspired to BE a pimp then I'd have a problem. :rotfl:

My nephew wore that costume when he was about 11. I wasn't offended just thought it was one more parenting choice my SIL made that I didn't agree with:lmao: I don't get offended at too much but one year I saw a woman dressed as Jackie kennedy with a blood splattered suit on and that did offend me. Just thought it was in extremely bad taste but different strokes for different folks I guess.

A friend of my son wore that costume a couple of years ago when they were 11. It was the first time I'd seen it on children, and I was just glad my own kid didn't choose it.

Like it or not, I think a big part of Halloween is pushing the envelope of taste and what's acceptable. Many years ago, when I was a young teen, one of my friends went out as a pregnant woman. My mother was horrified!

I've seen a nun costume where a flap in the front reveals fake nakedness in the chest. My coworker's 6 year-old DD is a "Pink Party Leopard" this year. That blood-coursing costume that was popular a few years back was pretty disgusting to look at.

Many Halloween costumes are all about trying to offend or shock or horrify. It's the nature of the beast.

the frat boys from the local university turned up last year as nuns-in the old style full blown head to toe habits. to their credit they behaved very respectfully, and depending on the quality of the candy you were handing out you might get anything from a polite thank-you to a full blown blessing of your home and 'the hands that have that have brought forth the delightful consumable offerings':rotfl::rotfl:

Now those sound like some fun kids! :thumbsup2 I wish they would come to my house, I'd give them jumbo sized candy bars just to watch them bless my home for me. :rotfl:

That's true, and I do expect that sort of thing from older teens or young adults (or even some older adults) who can take themselves to the store and purchase their own costumes. And honestly, though I do find some costumes to be in poor taste, I'm not offended by them. (Well, the bloody Jackie O is offensive to me, but most things aren't.) It's the fact that these children's parents are letting them dress as pimps (or "hoes" in that one case) that I really have a problem with. Parents who approve of costumes like that are sending the wrong message to their children, in my opinion. And frankly I think any parent who thinks their elementary or middle school aged child doesn't know what a pimp is just hasn't spent much time around groups of children that age. Unless a kid is homeschooled, as soon as they get to school and tell their friends that they are a pimp, one of those friends is going to tell them exactly what a pimp does. Probably in great detail. (Probably one of those friends whose parents don't check - or don't care about - game ratings and got them Grand Theft Auto last Christmas!) I'm sort of surprised, really - this popped up on yesterday on several forums I read and the Dis is the only one where anyone thought it was acceptable for pre-teens to dress as pimps and "hoes" for Halloween.

It gets worse...how about for a toddler?

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Inappropriate....but it did make me laugh.

I really don't know what costume designers are thinking.

OK...I have to give an update. After stewing about the costume, I decided to call my brother. My nephew had no idea what a pimp was...he liked the costume look.

So tonight we are getting ready and nephew says he's a pimp. I ask him if he knows what one is. He says...no. I tell him that he is just a cool looking guy from the 80"s. That a pimp is not a nice person. Unfortunately, my son, also 11, sort of new what a pimp was. So...I was glad I cleared up that we would NOT want to be a pimp.

Anyway, all is good....our caped guy went trick or treating with a guy in a purple suit!

So he was dressed as Prince?;)

Well, we had a boy, about 8 or 9 yrs. old, that was wearing a white t-shirt, a beard, long shorts and carrying an empty beer can. When I asked him what he was, his mom said, "A redneck!"
