What do you think of Stouffer's Lasagna?

I am in charge of a church dinner for 25 people that has a planned menu. So far I am having trouble getting people to donate the main dish lasagna or baked ziti. I think it's easy to make, but I guess others don't. Someone mentioned to me to get the meat or veg. lasagna from Stouffer's, but how does it taste?

I've had it plenty of times before, especially growing up. But it's got it's distinctive taste to it, so you know it's Stouffer's. I guess it would be one way to get your message across, this is what happens when people don't want to help.

I can't say making it from scratch is any cheaper though. Cheese is really expensive, even if the sauce and pasta only cost a couple of dollars.

Well, I think it is ok for a frozen meal, but my DS 14 eats almost anything, and he won't touch it.

Now, and here comes my ugly side. This always seems to be a problem with churches. Not knocking them, I am a church goer myself. But getting people to volunteer for something is like pulling teeth. That being said, if I couldn't get anyone to help out or donate, I would say to heck with everyone and do what was easiest and if they didn't like it, then next time they could do it themselves. We used to get a large frozen lasagna from Costco for an annual potluck dinner with 4H. It was bigger and tasted better than the Stouffers. We haven't done that for a few years, now, so I don't know if Costco still sells them. I think you are on the right track with going with a frozen lasagna for a large group.

I had a coupon, so I bought one, and the kids were horrified and disgusted.

I'm not a big pasta fan, but I think the Stouffer's lasgna is fine. MY DF said the new Italiano version is alot better than the original.

My dh and kids love them....I HATE them! They, like stated above, TASTE frozen and incredibly overprocessed. Blech.

Simek's has a decent lasagna. Not sure if they are nation wide.

Can you get people to donate parts of it - the noodles, sauce, meat, etc? And then a few people donate their time to making it??

My family likes the Kirkland brand from Costco.

If you can't get people to help, then I see absolutely nothing wrong with going with frozen. I have found at my church there can be a problem with a project getting planned by a couple of people, then they expect everyone else to jump on board. Sometimes the date or activity chosen just isn't something other people can (or want to) participate in. Not saying that is the case with your church or activity, just a thought.

If you can make it, yours will be better tasting, healthier, and cost less! I think of Stouffers as a different item than real lasagna. Kind of like a White Castle is in it's own category- not really what I'd consider a hamburger.

Wow, I must be the only person who actually likes it. The Italian is better than the Traditional, but I really like the Veggie Lasagna but it isn't made in the party size (or at least not stocked in my grocers).

I don't find anything wrong with using frozen entrees to feed a group if no one is willing to cook one.

You could make your own Ziti a lot cheaper. You can even get the disposible foil pans. Meatless would be healthier and cheaper yet!

I don't see anything wrong with it. I've had homemade lasagna that I thought was much worse but to each their own. It's overly salty though.

Stauffers veggie lasagna tastes really bad. We just talked about this at Mom's league last week - everyone had tried it and no one would do it again. I don't mind their regular though and that seemed to be a go-to for moms when they didn't want to cook but they all preferred home made. I think lasagna takes a long time and makes a big mess. I'd make the ziti though-no layering and no assembly line process.

We all like the original Stouffer's. None of us liked the Italian version. But after reading a Consumer's Report article on various name brand vs store brand foods, I tried the highly rated Great Value frozen lasagna from Wal-Mart. The magazine notes said good flavor but needed a little more cheese. I grate some mozzerella and put on top. It has a different flavor than the Stouffer's, but is good as well. Lasagna is one item I do think is hard to do from scratch. To me the frozen tastes probably better and is sure easier.

If you don't want to cook yourself or buy frozen, try calling one of your local grocery stores. They usually have a halfway decent lasagna or baked ziti type item that isn't too expensive.

I've never tried it by my DH will not touch frozen or store made lasagna, it has to be homemade. There really is no comparison in taste, homemade it 10x better and it's really not that hard to make. I even make the sauce myself and can put it all together in 30-45 plus baking time. Plus I love to add lots of veggies which makes it much healthier.
