I thought they had all agreed to "play nice" for tonight.

I hope this is the only breach. While I understand that feelings are running high, let the Oscars be the Oscars for tonight.

This is not the time nor the place, IMHO.

I agree - pick another forum for those remarks.

Claudia I said the same thing on another thread. That was unnecessary and he was out of line.

I could not agree more - tonight is not the time, and the awards are not the place. What a disappointment.

he got more boos than cheers..... what an classless act. the Presenters have to play nice, while the winners can say what they want.

Well it wouldn't be an awards show if at least one windbag didn't use it as his own personal soapbox.

I think what he did was classless, I didn't vote for Bush but he is not the fictious president. did he say something about the pope as well?
I knew he was going to do this- if anyone was going to do this , it would be him-he is very outspoken.

A letter to Bush from Michael Moore as posted on his website. I think the Acadamy saw this one coming.

A Letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush on the Eve of War

George W. Bush
1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Washington, DC

Dear Governor Bush:

So today is what you call "the moment of truth," the day that "France and the rest of world have to show their cards on the table." I'm glad to hear that this day has finally arrived. Because, I gotta tell ya, having survived 440 days of your lying and conniving, I wasn't sure if I could take much more. So I'm glad to hear that today is Truth Day, 'cause I got a few truths I would like to share with you:

1. There is virtually NO ONE in America (talk radio nutters and Fox News aside) who is gung-ho to go to war. Trust me on this one. Walk out of the White House and on to any street in America and try to find five people who are PASSIONATE about wanting to kill Iraqis. YOU WON'T FIND THEM! Why? 'Cause NO Iraqis have ever come here and killed any of us! No Iraqi has even threatened to do that. You see, this is how we average Americans think: If a certain so-and-so is not perceived as a threat to our lives, then, believe it or not, we don't want to kill him! Funny how that works!

2. The majority of Americans -- the ones who never elected you -- are not fooled by your weapons of mass distraction. We know what the real issues are that affect our daily lives -- and none of them begin with I or end in Q. Here's what threatens us: two and a half million jobs lost since you took office, the stock market having become a cruel joke, no one knowing if their retirement funds are going to be there, gas now costs almost two dollars -- the list goes on and on. Bombing Iraq will not make any of this go away. Only you need to go away for things to improve.

3. As Bill Maher said last week, how bad do you have to suck to lose a popularity contest with Saddam Hussein? The whole world is against you, Mr. Bush. Count your fellow Americans among them.

4. The Pope has said this war is wrong, that it is a SIN. The Pope! But even worse, the Dixie Chicks have now come out against you! How bad does it have to get before you realize that you are an army of one on this war? Of course, this is a war you personally won't have to fight. Just like when you went AWOL while the poor were shipped to Vietnam in your place.

5. Of the 535 members of Congress, only ONE (Sen. Johnson of South Dakota) has an enlisted son or daughter in the armed forces! If you really want to stand up for America, please send your twin daughters over to Kuwait right now and let them don their chemical warfare suits. And let's see every member of Congress with a child of military age also sacrifice their kids for this war effort. What's that you say? You don't THINK so? Well, hey, guess what -- we don't think so either!

6. Finally, we love France. Yes, they have pulled some royal screw-ups. Yes, some of them can be pretty damn annoying. But have you forgotten we wouldn't even have this country known as America if it weren't for the French? That it was their help in the Revolutionary War that won it for us? That our greatest thinkers and founding fathers -- Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, etc. -- spent many years in Paris where they refined the concepts that lead to our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution? That it was France who gave us our Statue of Liberty, a Frenchman who built the Chevrolet, and a pair of French brothers who invented the movies? And now they are doing what only a good friend can do -- tell you the truth about yourself, straight, no b.s. Quit pissing on the French and thank them for getting it right for once. You know, you really should have traveled more (like once) before you took over. Your ignorance of the world has not only made you look stupid, it has painted you into a corner you can't get out of.

Well, cheer up -- there IS good news. If you do go through with this war, more than likely it will be over soon because I'm guessing there aren't a lot of Iraqis willing to lay down their lives to protect Saddam Hussein. After you "win" the war, you will enjoy a huge bump in the popularity polls as everyone loves a winner -- and who doesn't like to see a good ***-whoopin' every now and then (especially when it 's some third world ***!). So try your best to ride this victory all the way to next year's election. Of course, that's still a long ways away, so we'll all get to have a good hardy-har-har while we watch the economy sink even further down the toilet!

But, hey, who knows -- maybe you'll find Osama a few days before the election! See, start thinking like THAT! Keep hope alive! Kill Iraqis -- they got our oil!!

Yours,

Michael Moore

IMO, that was very distasteful. I don't mind the "peace on earth" type protest(ers), but he went over the top. :( Boo!

Disappointing, but expected. I would have much rather had him use that time to remember those who have died at the hands of senseless gun violence instead of using them as a means to carry his anti-Bush message.

Few if any people like the way how Bush got into the White House, but two years on it's really time to stop dwelling on it.

if anyone didn't see that ocming, they are an idiot. it's fricking michael moore! of COURSE he is going to say something!

Expected is right. Michael Moore lives for this stuff. The fact that it was neither the time nor the place was probably even more enticing to him.

The guy made a pretty good documentary, though.

Dear Ms Moore: (since we're into improper titles & all)

Your bias against people with different political ideologies is remarkable. Before you start to pat yourself on the back thinking this is a compliment, it's not. Here's a few things you may want to consider:

1. There was virtually NO ONE in America (blind Clinton followers aside) that was gung-ho to go to war with Bosnia, Kosovo or Iraq (part 2). Trust me on this one. Open your closed mind and on to any street in America and try to find five people who are (positively) PASSIONATE about Clinton's character. YOU WON'T FIND THEM! Maybe on Haight-Ashbury, in Hollywood or Manhattan. Why? 'Cause NO one, aside from bastians of liberalism, respects him! This was even the case before the chubby intern. You see, this is how we average Americans think: If this guy was married to my sister or had sold me a used car, I would have kicked his ***.

2. The majority of Americans -- the ones who never bother to watch your propagandist documentaries -- are not fooled by your complete liberal bias. We know what the real issues are that affect our daily lives -- and none of them begin with Y or U. Here's what threatens us: character assassination disguised as "thoughtful commentary", attempting to divide a majority united America, attempting to equate terror threats to gas prices on the exact same level -- the list goes on and on. So you have to take a pay cut or pay extra to fill up your SUV, is that worth the life of Iraqis to you? Because leaving Saddam in power is exactly what you're condemning them too. I'm sorry if I don't get warm fuzzies about Saddam or his psychopathic boys. Perhaps you & a few of your libbed-up dilettante buddies can lament the great days of Saddam's regime.

3. Bill Maher said that the 9/11 terrorists weren't cowards. Obviously a man prone to having diarrhea of the mouth & constipation of the brain. Are you really sure that's the guy you want to use to support your views? Maybe throw in a little Joseph Stalin in there too?

4. The Pope has said this war is wrong, yet remains silent on the pedophiles. Didn't the Pope at the time also say WWII was wrong? The Pope! By the way, President Bush isn't Catholic, so the Pope's position really doesn't have much of an effect. I wonder how JFK (no doubt a hero of yours) resigned himself with adultry or Vietnam. The Dixie Chicks have commited professional suicide! Ask Jane Fonda how well it helped her career. How long will it take you to realize that this war is the right course of action? Of course, this is a war you personally won't have to fight due to the many brave men & women that fight for your right to make your silly little movies & make your silly little comments. But yammer away. The founding fathers granted this freedom with their blood, even for psuedo-intellectuals like you, Moore.

5. Of the 535 members of Congress, only ONE (Sen. Russ Feingold - Democrat, Wisconsin) disagreed with taking action against terror threats! Also Congress agreed that action should be taken if Saddam doesn't comply to resolution 1441 (77-23 in the Senate & 296-133 in the House). BTW, Clinton didn't even bother to get the UN's approval when he started bombing Iraq. Where was the righteous indignation then?

The majority of Americans agree with the action. If you really want to stand up for America, please run for office. It might be an interesting exercize to find out what it takes make things work in government What's that you say? You don't THINK so? Well, hey, guess what -- we don't think so either! But try anyway. Maybe Walter Mondale can give you a few pointers on how to run a campaign. If Bush was all the things you claim his is, then the middle east would have been nuked on 9/12/01. I guess it's always easier to armchair quarterback, huh? Safer too, that way a smaller percentage knows that you're full of it.

6. Finally, France has shot themselves in the foot. When they said they would veto any resolution to inforce 1441 (which was unanimously by the UNSC), regardless of what the resolution read, they rendered the UN obsolete & themselves as a former ally. They tried to bully other countries into compitualation or threatening their membership in the European Union. Oh yeah & people don't love the French. Ask the average person on the street what they think of them. The French have hated us for a long time & now the feeling is mutual. Sure, we'll drink champagne or eat croissants, but they have no problem watching our movies (heh, likely not yours though) or visiting Disneyland Paris. Many feel that the debt owed during our Revolution was paid when the idea sparked their own. Even if that isn't acceptable to you, our debt was paid tenfold when thousands of our young men drew their last breath on the D-Day trying to liberate France from tyranny.

Even out of good will, we're letting the obsolete UN act as the middle man for the food for oil program. France has said that they'll hop aborad when Saddam uses his WMD - I'm sure they wanna get there to rub off the "Made In France" markings ASAP. Of course they've also offered to exile that fine person, Saddam. After all it worked so well for Napoleon...oh wait, nevermind. Now doubt they'll try to throw their hat in the ring when it comes time for rebuilding. France...I can think of a couple other words that start with "F".

Well, cheer up -- there IS good news. Iraqis are being freed as I type this! They're welcoming our troops with open arms. Funny how liberation from oppression can have that effect. Oh yeah & the stock market has been surging too.

Not Yours,
Thank you.

Don't flame me please.... I don't agree with what Bush does sometimes but on this I do- this needs to be done but I also wish that the 1st bush and clinton would have done something about Sadaam as well.

I missed it, thank goodness.
