What do you think of Katie Couric?

Not a fan, never was. I never understood the hype about her. Because I don't like her political leanings, I love to watch her after or during elections. She'd can't hide her emotions and is a hoot to watch. Anyone remember how distraught she was when working w/ Tom Brokaw in 2000? He was actually laughing about her and she was so upset. Then wearing black after this one. Ya gotta laugh at those moments. :rotfl2: I actually like Matt Lauer because he hides his leanings pretty well and does good interviews and has a good sense of humor by teasing her about her cheapness and such. The joke around their group is that she is not just frugal, but cheap cheap cheap.

I also HATE the way she interviews. Her interview questions are 10 sentences long and they aren't even questions, more like monologues. The person being interviewed has to agree or disagree w/ her, but usually doesn't answer because there was no question to answer. I also go crazy when she "throws" in a new word for the day.... usually a 3 or more syllable, difficult word that she just inserts into an interview monologue to show how smart she is. You can tell the sentence only exists so she can use that word of the day. It usually has nothing to do w/ the interview. One time, this person being interviewed joked about it and tried to use her "big" word in a sentence a few times just to solidify his point of her going overboard w/ the spelling/definition teachings. It was really funny.

I admire her fight on colon cancer and I'm am sorry for her loss. Her DH was too young. But she makes me ill too w/ her fake perkiness. I've seen perky, and perky doesn't bother me. But she has something behind the perkiness, the "eat you up and spit you out" type personality which makes the sweet, sunny, perkiness seem like just facade to me. Oh and she is so very messy and highly unorganized. It drives Matt nuts. :teeth:

I'm going to have to try GMA. I hear great things and haven't switched over yet. I really should check it out.

I never cared for her.

Plus I think she wears too much mascara. Her eyes always look really heavy.

I forgot about that. She was reminding me of Tammy Faye Baker (I think that's the lady w/ all the mascara) in a couple of the shows.

I totally lost respect(what little I had) for her when she interviewed Barb Morgan, The next Mission Specialist Education astronaut. Katie said it was exciting that she could do so much by ONLY being a teacher. :sad2:

Spending $800 on shoes when you made MILLIONS is just a drop in the bucket. Sorry Cindy B., but her ratio of spending $$ to her earnings is probably more similiar to your style than you think. Everything is relative. A homeless person would probably not like you for spending "x" amount of dollars on your internet provider each month. If she earns three million a year, $800 is the same as someone making $100,000 a year and buying shoes that cost $30. So who is down to earth then? Don't hate because people are in a different tax bracket than you are. Be happy that you aren't on welfare or homeless.

I lived in Northern California (Silicon Valley) for many years and have a degree from Stanford Business School. While I am not rich by any means, I know many, many people who are incredibly wealthy - some of the names you would recognize in an instant. (I am not bragging - it's just a matter of circumstance.)

I would say that 99.9% of them think that paying $800 for a pair of fashion shoes is just ridiculous. Now if they were custom made for support, etc that would be a different story. The ultra wealthy people that I know are for the most part just folks. I had some of these people to dinner at my tiny apartment and even though they may live in large homes it didn't really matter to them.

I have one acquaintance who literally has more money than Teresa Heinz - he does live in a nice home (but not a mansion) but does not live an extravagant live style by any means.

Most of us are limited on what we can buy because of our finances. I've had some interesting conversations with some people who are not. Many of these people grew up in low to moderate income families so it is not like they have always had money. They all said that they learned quickly that you still buy what you need and can use if you have any sense at all rather than just buying because can.

I personally don't care what kind of shoes someone wears. If an $800 pair of shoes is SO important to you and you can afford it then have at it, but it's still a DECISION that reflects ones' value system like most other acquisitions.

She does not strike me as being overly bright. She talks more when interviewing someone than her subject does. She does a horrible job of hiding her liberal biases. She is way to cutesy for my tastes.

She may be a nice person on a personal level, but I don't like her at all as a journalist or morning show host.

Maybe that is why I like her..... we have the same political beliefs!

I never liked Katie or Matt. I work at Rockefeller Center, so I see them everyday. They seem so phony, they come out for 5 minutes smile all nice then run inside. A few weeks ago Will Smith was outside, shaking hands with everyone, even reaching into the people in the back, posing pictures with them all.

When I'm home I never watch the Today show.

Well I guess I'll be in the minority because I like Katie Couric and the Today Show staff. I don't at all think Katie is fake or annoying. She is a woman who is intelligent and puts her spin on the stories she does just like any journalist. I think she meshes well with Matt Lauer  and they balance each other out. He is a bit more shy while she is out going. It maybe that I like Katie because I'm also a perky person who is outgoing. I don't think it's strange but I could see where more reserved people would question this realness.

I personally think Diane Sawyer is an ice queen. If I have to watch ABC it's because I want to see Barabara Walters.

I don't care for her - I think she's condescending. I wish I had her legs though!

Not a fan of her show either. But I will say they have her on at the right time of day. Can you imagine watching her royal perkiness at night and then trying to go to sleep? She reminds me of a :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

That's it exactly! I think that is why when she did not share a personal experience with not fitting in in school, it really rubbbed me the wrong way.

I think everyone has had a "moment" or two in their school career where they did not feel like they fit in. Even the popular crowd did, I am sure. She could of shared an experience like that. I am thinking, that Today is on early AM, maybe alot of HS girls watch it before heading out to school. I think if Katie could of conjured up a time in her teen years where she felt like she did not fit in ( even if it was for all of 10 minutes), those teen girls watching, who probably walk into living hell when they step into their school, would of had a sliver of hope that everything might be OK after all. Does this make sense?

My experience with the "popular" crowd was, most of them were cheerleaders. and they were CRUEL. If your have a DD that cheers, good for her, good for you. But I was deeply affected by "those" girls growing up, and watching Katie the other day with those women, talking about how horrible school can be for some girls (and boys) not fitting in, and you have Matt saying he knows exactly what they are talking about, he lived it. Then you have Katie, with her perky little smile talk about how she is worried for her daughter, how she fits in. It totally brought me back to my adolesence, and those "my farts don't stink, but you do" cheerleaders.

i only watch today show for al................

I never watch Today. Give me Diane Sawyer, Charlie Gibson, Robin Roberts, and Tony Perkins anyday. They all seem to genuinely like each other and they all work so well together. Nothing seems forced at all.

Just a shot in the dark----BUT when you converse with other parents about a topic about their children..do you naturally talk about yourself or your kids situation when personalizing your answers?

Katie really loves her girls as any mother would--and she's protective of that. Her answer seems like a normal parental response to a conversation...and let's be honest here.....these are not Dateline NBC interviews---these are Today show morning coffee conversations. Different style all together. And teen girls aren't watching the today show--they are catching the bus and going to school (Okay, maybe just Eastern US).

It is not their duty to have Katie be the role model for young women and use interview moments as public service announcements of "Even I had a millisecond of discomfort in high school--but I perserved and look at me now" moments. She conducted an interview--and the purpose was towards the parents in the tv land. So perhaps a parent is saying---"Oh my, even Katie is worried about her kids and look at her, maybe I should follow up with my kids to make sure they are not being bullied"

Ok--that was a few shots in the dark :p .

Off the Katie Topic--but we got Mark Mckewen (sp?) from CBS on the cbs-affiliate in Orlando...so if anybody misses him, you can catch him when you are waking up and getting ready to hit the parks on your future visits down here ;)

I didn't like him at first, but he's okay now. I'm hooked on our affiliate--so I do try to give all the anchors a chance :).

I dunno, don't tend to like or dislike anchorpeople.

But she did wear the most awful jacket the other day. I swear, my mom had chair cushions in the same pattern. With the same fringe.

It's funny that so many people here say they don't like her because of her political beliefs. One of my liberal friends is under the impression that Katie is a Republican.

Maybe she's more middle of the road than you thought.

I like when they show flashbacks of her---one in particular a Pea in the Pod Maternity Tent (not a dress..the sucker looked like a tent!). I only know the brand b/c she called it that hideouis Pea in the Pod dress or something to that effect.

Fun to see her pics from the 80s and her hair transformations. Now those are real "What was she thinking?" moments.

I totally agree. Matt gave his perspective relating to his own teen years, and Katie gave the perspective relating to her kids. I think that the two together hit a bigger audience than the both of them talking about themselves. And in response to Snappy, that is a big assumption to make (that everyone has had a moment in school where they felt like they didn't fit it). Lots of people don't want to "fit in" and lots of people have been able to fit in everywhere. Then you have people who never fit in and people who start out on the outside then end up fitting in. If she had great self-esteem and was popular, maybe she didn't have problems with that stuff as a kid. Why does it make people feel better to hear that other people had the same misery that they did? Oh, I forgot. Misery love company.
