What do you think? Is DAS worth pursuing?

I am recovering from renal cell carcinoma and had my right kidney removed after they discovered a 7cm tumor covering the kidney; I also suffer from stage 3 kidney disease in the remaining kidney.
I am staying on resort within the next two weeks and will be visiting all of the parks at least once during our 5 day stay .
I cannot ride roller coasters as was recommended by my surgical urologists because of only having one kidney; however, I want to do as much as I can but I have limitations. Most importantly when I have to go, I have to go.
My question is more on practical grounds :
Should I consider using the DAS system that will give a return time to those rides I can ride and thus allow me to visit rest areas more frequently or is my thought process way off track

I think you might more responses if you post your question on the disABILITIES board rather than here on the DVC board. There are several people on that board that are quite knowledgeable about DAS and how it operates.

Good luck!

The DAS is no longer the GAS of the past but it helps. Go to guest services and tell them the accommodations you will need. If you just need a wheelchair that is available.

You don't need to tell them the DX, just what you need to have equal access to the rides. Do you need to stay out of the sun? Etc.

With the DAS you are given a return time to go on the ride and you are allowed only 3 rides per day.

I hope this helps.

The bolded is not correct. Guests using DAS are not limited in the number of DAS Return Times they can get.
They can get as many as they want, but can only have one active at a time. So, you must use the first one before you can get a second.

Follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES Board. Near the top if the board, there is a DAS thread for WDW and one for DL. The first post in each thread is a DAS FAQs that should be able to answer your questions.

Moved from DVC Boards - to where the DAS experts post. :)

You may certainly ask at Guest Relations about a DAS. You will have to explain your needs related to waiting in a line, rather than a diagnosis.
DD has a kidney condition so I understand your concerns. My recommendation is to stop at restrooms frequently, and always right before getting in a line. Even with a DAS or FP+ the lines can be 15 minutes or more at busy times, then you have the length of the ride or show after that. Some can be rather long. If you find you have to leave a line, speak with a CM on your way out.
Enjoy your vacation!

I too had renal cell carcinoma and am 5 weeks post partial nephrectomy. Up until last week I used my dad's power wheelchair to do the parks with because I didn't have the stamina to do the walking. I'm sure your doctor doesn't want you to do roller coasters and I would include Toy Story Mania in that not to do because the stomach muscles were cut into during surgery. Doctor checked my muscles on Thursday and said I am now good to go on any ride. My 16 year old daughter had her kidney removed when she was 3 and rides roller coasters.

I only have one kidney as well. I'm surprised to read about no coasters, I have never had a doctor tell me this (or my sister, who I donated my kidney too - she is the reason I only have one!)

I think the OP's doctor recommended no coasters because of other factors - the Original Poster had one kidney removed and the remaining kidney has stage 3 kidney disease. I think that's why the do or is bring more cautious.

In Michigan's case, she had a temporary recommendation to not do roller coasters because of how recent her surgery was.

So, if someone has checked with their doctor and got the OK, they are good to go.
