There is an Aldi opening up near me soon. I have heard it has really cheap prices but a small selection.

We are Trader Joe's fanatics but it is not as close as the new Aldi will be.

Opinions?

I love aldi. I was shopping at walmart (which is enough to get you crucified over here) for two before, and when I switched to aldi, our weekly grocery bill dropped by $20-$40.

You can't get everything there, and its almost all a "generic" brand that you've probably never seen before. But the quality is very good, in my experience.

Even if you don't shop there all the time, the canned food is at least half the price of walmart. Its a good place to go once every few months and stock up on things like canned food.

ETA: they also have some household items, like cat litter, soap, shampoo, tissues, etc.

I love Aldi, the one by me almost always has really good prices. Most of their things are brand name items repackaged under the Aldi brand.

Here's some threads (2 in the past 2 days ) that might have some good opinions:

And if you aren't sick of reading about Aldi yet, here's a 6 page thread with "whats good and bad at Aldi"

Never heard of Aldi - just had a look and there arent any in NY. Bummer.

Aldi isn't even in the same realm as Trader Joe's.

Do you google?

Wait, I thought Aldi and Trader Joes were owned by the same people. When I looked it up on Google it compared it to TJ's. Hmmm

I like Aldi's stuff. We get a lot of things that are either the same brand as the regular stores or something that isn't name brand and they taste a looot better than the ones we'd get at Walmart.

Wait a minute... I SWEAR I heard that nobody has ever shopped at Aldi?

You ROCK!:lmao:

Aldi is okay, if you aren't particular about brands and don't need to buy any special foods. For instance, I have never seen no-salt canned veggies or broths. None of the no-sugar-added canned fruits. There selection of fresh produce is pretty limited.

Aldi doesn't really work for me. I cook almost exclusively with fresh foods, supplementing occasionally with specific canned or frozen items. We simply can't eat a lot of the things they sell. And their supplies are limited. I can't go there with my list and know that I'm going to get everything. THere's not a lot of variety. If you want green beans, you can find ONE brand of green beans in ONE type(cut, french-style, etc) If you want cereal you can find ONE kind of shredded wheat-type, and maybe three sugared cereals. Last time I went I wanted old-fashioned oatmeal, but all they had was those nasty instant powder-in-a-pouch kind. Bleah!

Aldi & Trader Joe's are not owned by the same person. One brother owns Aldi one owns Trader Joes but they are not the same company. Trader Joes is higher end Aldi is lower end. I love Aldi.

Our Aldi carries fresh produce--but the few times I have been in--it is far more expensive than the regular stores. I don't understand why--other than I suppose that fresh produce can only get to a certain price. I think it is there for a convenience for the oflks that do their full trip at Aldi.

I thought Aldi was a shoe store :confused3 Off to Google :moped:
You are thinking of Aldo :rotfl2:

I see Aldi as the Dollar Tree of grocery stores. It's mostly all generic stuff... GREAT for if you need elbow macaroni, spaghetti noodles, etc., not so good for other stuff... like if you want Kelloggs-brand cereal, or real Oreo's... Certified Angus beef, fresher produce, etc.

This is what I read that made me believe Aldi was owned by both brothers.

Trader Joe's was founded by Joe Coulombe and is currently owned by a family trust set up by German businessman Theo Albrecht, one of the two brothers behind the German supermarket chain Aldi.
