I never understood why Disney made a sequel to The Rescuers with The Rescuers Down Under but I first saw it when my dad found the video of it in a thrift shop and found it enjoyable. I understand that The Rescuers Down Under is often one of the overlooked Disney movies because it has no songs but I do like that Bernard and Miss Bianca are still crushes in this movie. Did Disney think that The Rescuers Down Under would set the base for a third The Rescuers sequel?

No because people who watched the original and sequel as kids are in their 50s now.

I think with The Rescuers Down Under Disney was planning to make a trilogy of The Rescuers movies and seeing that The Rescuers came out in the 70's they knew that a sequel to The Rescuers would do good in the 90's. I also read that part of the film's success was due to Jerry Goldsmith composing the film's score but I mainly think that they recycled The Rescuers because like in The Rescuers Bernard and Bianca rescue Penny the little girl they repeated the exact same thing but with a young boy named Cody and the eagle Marahute in The Rescuers Down Under. I think this sequel was made because Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor had fun providing the voices of Bernard and Bianca and Disney offered them the sequel as a chance to do it again. How much did The Rescuers Down Under make for Disney at the box-office?
