What do you pay to have your taxes done?

Yipes. We paid H&R $630 last year. I didn't realize it's so much more than others are paying.

:sad2:

We file married/jointly and file deductions and for Federal and 2 different state taxes we pay $175. It is a private tax accounting firm. I wouldn't go to H & R Block.

We went there years ago before we found our current accountant and they tried to charge us over $300 for the same returns we do now, years later for $175. We took our stuff and walked out. Didn't pay, never went back.

Go to an accountant and ask if you can use Form 3115 to correct your error all at once (which may or may not be as beneficial as amending but you can only amend 3 years back). But they can figure that out for you. I would not attempt it yourself.

We prepare tax returns where I work (law office) and we charge anywhere from $50 for a simple W-2 return to $450 for a farmer with lots of stuff going on.

My only experience with H&R Block is when new clients bring in their last year's return from there and it frequently has errors. No offense to any good H&R preparers... In my office we have another person extensively review every return before the client signs.

I would try doing a dummy run online. I use Turbo Tax and see if it will let you do the depreciation. It's free to go through the whole tax form. You only pay at the end when you actually file. I only pay $29.99 when I actually file. And if it doesn't let you do it - no loss.

I would suggest this too. We always use TT (have for around 10+ years) and we too have a rental home. The first time we put it into TT, it did all the questions about home value etc and it seems to keep track year to year with all the depreciation stuff. I'm not sure how long you've been using the HR Block program, but I guess I assume all these programs work about the same.
