What Do You Mean It's Time To Eat Again? A DxDDP Pictorial Upd. 11/1 Chefs de France!

Subscribing...thanks for sharing! :)

(wondering what kind of camera you used, my food pictures usually come out blurry)

I used an Olympic Stylus 840. I'm still getting used to it (I got it for my birthday in July and this is the first trip I used it on). Some of my whites came out a bit too white so I'm trying to correct it manually, but it has a cuisine scene setting that saturates the colors and details a bit more so it takes pretty good food close-ups. Now, buffet pictures? Well, that's something I'm still figuring out the best setting for :)

That's disapointing :sad2: We haven't been to Ohana's in years, but were thinking of going in December. Hopefully (for me :guilty: ) you were just there on a bad night :rolleyes1

sorry about your experience at ohana :( i'm still looking forward to it, especialy after your great pics!! I'm elated to hear that the bread pudding ha coconut!1 I love coconut anything!! Looking forward to your akeshurs breakfast report. We are doing it for our first time in a couple weeks!!

Well, I have finally caught up. Before I talk about your reviews, I have to share something that helped me cope because I also had a grandparent with Alzheimer's. Even though my grandpa couldn't remember my name or even if I was his granddaughter sometimes, he did remember experiences that we shared ~ teaching a girl to drive a stick shift or running around the county with her getting melons in the summertime. I found comfort that he could remember events like that, even though I was another face in the crowd sometimes. Enough about me, I am so happy for you that your Grandma was able to share your trip!

I have enjoyed reading your reviews so far. We have great BBQ here, so it would be tough to try other ribs (and enjoy them). As far as O'hana's, it seems like it is slipping in quality. Maybe, I am reading too much into the reviews here? Can't wait to read about Akershus ~ going even if it is bad.

Cant wait for your next installment!

Day 3: A Royal Breakfast at Akershus!

Ahhh...our eagerly anticipated first day in the parks! Epcot is my favorite park and I was super excited. We had an 8:30 ADR at Akershus, so we left the GF at 7:30 and it was just enough time (remember, Akershus is in WS and it's a good 5-15 minute walk from the park entrance depending on how fast you walk, plus lines to get through bag check). We not-so-quickly made our way through bag check and walked over to the Princess Storybook Breakfast sign. A lady with a list checked that we, indeed, had an ADR and we entered the park.

An empty Epcot is a beautiful Epcot and I slowed us down by taking way too many pictures. This new camera of mine has the ability to take panoramics and I took advantage of taking a few of WS.

We checked into Akershus just in time and were handed a beeper (we didn't have to wait long). I was really excited, but also a bit nervous, for this breakfast. After all, four adults at a Princess breakfast? The eternal five-year-old in me was really excited because I never got to do any of this growing up but the adult in me worried that we'd be the only adults there. My fears quickly dissipated- lots of adult-only parties (even a few adults with autograph books).

Our beeper went off not five minutes after we arrived and we were led into a line to take our picture with Belle (DM and DGM didn't want to be in the picture...the picture now adorns DM's desk at work) in our "Princess" poses. From there, we were led to our table (perfect location: right near the cold table and in the room where the princesses came out) where our server took our drink orders and told us how the meal worked (cold table was buffet-style, hot food would be brought to the table family-style AYCE). On a side note: on any dining plan, you are entitled to two drinks with breakfast. The servers never told us this and we often had to remind them of this. Know what you are paying for :) Everyone had OJ and coffee, except for me (I always start my day with a cold glass of milk and a steaming cup of coffee).

The cold table had many yummy offerings. Lots of fresh fruit, pastries, cold cuts, cheeses, and much to the delight of DSis, DM, and DGM, lox and all the fixings (except for bagels, oddly enough...they made do with croissants).

The hot food came out quickly thereafter. A large platter of eggs, sausage, bacon, and cheesy potatoes was placed in the center of the table and our server was very diligent in making sure that nothing ran low. The food was very good (especially for a character meal, when the experience tends to overshadow standard to subpar food) and the potatoes were EXCELLENT. I definitely ate more than my share. No complaints with the food here at all from any of us- everything was very good.

The Princesses made their way quickly around the room (which I was thankful for...we really wanted to get into the parks and we were lucky enough that we were the third table they visited once they came out and we were able to visit with all of them). Aurora was first, followed by Jasmine, Snow White, and Mulan. After Mulan left, we credited our meal and quickly parted ways. DSis and I headed to TT, DM and DGM headed to The Land to FP Soarin for DSis and I and to ride LWTL. We met up after TT for a few hours of rides and shopping before lunch.

Up next: Lunch Under the Sea at Coral Reef!

I hope so, too, because I can't see DM or DSis agreeing to go anywhere else on our first official night LOL. I think our experience with the old menu last year was so great that finding my favorite items replaced with new items that (IMO) weren't as good was disappointing. As for the meats, I hear from the fam that the turkey and the pork were very good. The shrimp were burnt, but DM likes it that way. I figure it was just an off-night for the steak.

Akershus is WONDERFUL for breakfast! Enjoy :)

No worries about Akershus- you'll love it.

And thanks  She looks at me the same way she always has (no one adores me the way she always has...I'm her oldest grandchild) so I take comfort in that.

Cant wait for your next installment!

I hope you enjoy it! :)

Thanks for the Akershus review, I can't wait to hear about Coral Reef.

I can't wait to hear about Coral Reef either! DS11 loves seafood, and I made this res. for him for when we visit in mid-October.

Thanks again for the GREAT resource of information!

great review! I was nervous about this place as we ate ther for dinner in 2005 and thought the food was terrible. the atmosphere was great, but food was icky as all heck!

Great review, I am really looking forward to your Coral Reef review as we are eating there for the first time in December!

anxiously awaiting more posts! :goodvibes We leave in 6 days. :cool1:

Six days will be here quick, have fun!!!

I had a weird computer thing today where my Yahoo home page came up in all Chinese, strange and now as I am on the DIS I am noticing that noone's avatars are bouncing.....are they bouncing for you live???

Just got caught up - sorry you were disappointed with 'Ohana. The princess breakfast sounds good though. I can understand your concerns about being an adult-only party, DH and I were like that at our first character meal. Now we don't care :rotfl:

Looking forward to the Coral Reef review - and I'm intrigued to see what you chose considering you appear to feel the same way about seafood as I do.

Day 3: Lunch Under the Sea at Coral Reef

After breakfast, we planned to ride TT, Soarin', and SSE as many times as we could, but the Disney Gods had other plans for us. The park was PACKED. By the time DM and DGM got us our FP for Soarin' (while we waited in the modest 40 minute line for TT), they were for late afternoon. This was RIGHT after breakfast. We got on Soarin' once before lunch when the standby line was around 50 minutes. Even SSE had a regular wait time of 20 minutes (but I blame this to the people who stop and take multiple pictures of themselves in line or talk on their cellphones and don't realize the line is moving).

So, 3.5 hours after breakfast ended, all we had accomplished was one ride on TT, one ride on Soarin', two rides on LWTL (which, oddly enough, had frequent 50-minute waits when the crowds weren't bad when we went in May yet had frequent 5-minute waits when the crowds were insane on this trip), and two rides on SSE. It was hot and we spent most of the morning in lines, so we were all a bit cranky. But it was lunch time and it was nothing a good lunch couldn't fix.

DSis decided we would eat at Coral Reef because she saw it on Full House (two months later she decided she didn't want to eat there because she watched Free Willy and now had a fear of the aquarium exploding...too bad for her!). It was pretty full for lunch and we heard one walk-up try to make a reservation there to be told they were booked solid for lunch for four days and booked solid for dinner for four MONTHS!

We quickly checked in for our 1:00 ADR and were given a beeper. We had a modest 15 minute wait before we were seated on the "second level" of the restaurant (the first level...the seats right by the aquarium...are not handicap accessible...which was fine, as we had a fine view from our table).

P8110416.jpg

Our server, Joe, came over and was absolutely wonderful in telling us what was included in our plan (all non-alcoholic drinks are included at CF, including virgin mocktails and frozen drinks, but this changes at every restaurant in Epcot. For example, at CdF, you can only order soft drinks, so check with your server!) and how we could modify the menu any way we wanted to (he must have sensed my aversion to anything that comes from underwater).

DSis, of course, ordered a diet coke (DM kicked it up a notch and ordered an iced tea instead). DGM and I took advantage of what the plan offered us and both got virgin strawberry daiquiri's. They were light and refreshing and the perfect refresher for such a hot, crowded day. He also brought us some water with our smoothies (something that earned him brownie points since I usually have to ask!).
P8110417.jpg

Out with our drinks came some loaves of hot, crusty sourdough bread and some olive oil with balsamic vinegar to dip the bread in. SO good. Nothing more comforting than hot, doughy bread with some good EVOO and a light balsamic.
P8110421.jpg

DSis and DGM both started with the Mixed Greens Salad (with the Key Lime Herb Vinaigrette, but you can get blue cheese dressing if you like). They both loved it. DSis thought this was one of the best salad dressings she's ever had. It was tangy and light and matched perfectly with the field greens.
P8110426.jpg

DM and I both took Joe's suggestion for modifying what we wanted to. Between us, we had the Land and Sea appetizer, except I hate seafood so I had "Land and Land" (barbecued beef skewer with creamy polenta) and she doesn't like meat all that much so she had "Sea and Sea" (grilled shrimp with cucumber salad). DM didn't care for hers (she said the shrimp were warm and it didn't work for her), but I loved mine! The beef was soft and tender and the bbq sauce was tangy and not too sweet. The polenta was very creamy and worked well off the beef, but the portion of the "Land and Land" really could have been a meal. I only finished one full skewer and some of the polenta.

P8110427.jpg

For our main courses, DSis and DGM both got the Grilled Chicken Breast (served with roasted parsnips tossed in mizuna and almond-parsley pesto finished with toasted almonds). They both liked it. DSis didn't know what parsnips were but seemed to like it. She said the chicken was very moist and not over cooked.
P8110431.jpg

DM ordered the Caesar Salad with Shrimp. She didn't care for the shrimp, again (she also got sick that night and thought it might have been from the shrimp, but we ate so much at so many places she couldn't say if it was the shrimp that made her feel icky).
P8110430.jpg

I ordered the Grilled NY Strip Steak (served with potatoes au gratin and broccolini). The steak was cooked as I ordered it (medium-well), but again, I found the steak a bit tough and it had quite a bit of gristle. I'm starting to wonder, with the DDP, if Disney is buying lower-quality steaks. I love broccolini and the potatoes were pretty good, too.
P8110429.jpg

Even though we were all pretty stuffed from our lunch, we knew we HAD to try dessert here. I've seen too many pictures of scrumptious desserts to let an almost-full stomach get in my way :thumbsup2

DGM had the Key Lime Tart (served with a mango sauce) and she seriously threw that thing down in record time! She loved it. It also inspired DSis to stop at Sunshine Seasons later that day to get a Key Lime tart because she couldn't stop thinking about the one DGM had at lunch!
P8110432.jpg

Despite trying to convince each other to all try different things so we could try everything, DSis, DM and I all ordered the Chocolate Wave (served with brandied cherries) and it did not disappoint! It was warm and gooey and VERY chocolate-y. The brandied cherries were very strong but a perfect compliment to the heavy chocolate.
P8110433.jpg

P8110434.jpg

All in all, we enjoyed our meal here (except for DM, she only really liked her dessert). Not a seafood eater? No worries. There's plenty of non-seafood options to choose from. But even if you're full, don't skip dessert: it's the best part of the meal.

Up next: Viva (Tutto) Italia!

What wonderful reviews so far! I'm looking forward to more!
Your pictures are great and oh my goodness...you are so right, you made me hungry for sure!

Loving the reviews! I am also a huge rainbow sprinkles fan and will order desserts just because it has them. Your Goofy treat looked fabulous!

I, too, miss the cheesy potatoes at O'hana and we've decided to cancel our ressie there because of all the sub-par reviews I've been seeing. Sorry your meal wasn't great.

We are also doing lunch at CR and yours looked tasty. I'm doubly excited about it now!

We are also on the DxDP and I was somewhat concerned about the too much food thing also. We are pretty much doing your recommended one TS and a sig meal everyday. We are also staying 7 nights but will be there for 8 full days so that is also using up our points. I'm enjoying seeing your usage. Keep it up!!
