What Do You Mean It's Time To Eat Again? A DxDDP Pictorial Upd. 11/1 Chefs de France!

I'm so into this Food Report popcorn::

Awesome pictures, can't wait for more. We are still debating whether or not to do DxDDP or the regular DDP. We love having everything paid for up front so we are almost sold on the Deluxe, but still deciding.

Great job so far!! You may sway us to the Deluxe side of life :)

Loving your report so far! :surfweb:

My husband and I stayed at Gaylord Palms for Christmas 2006, and hearing you talk about it makes me miss it! The food prices were insane, but the atmosphere was so nice!

Looking forward to your Whispering Canyons review... Did you ask for catsup?

Day 2: A Rowdy Lunch at Whispering Canyon Cafe

After a lovely stay at the Gaylord Palms, it was finally time to leave and begin the trip we'd spent months anticipating (and hours upon hours of planning). We checked into the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa around 11 am. As we anticipated, our room wasn't ready yet. We went over to concierge to get a print-out of all of our ADR's (all three pages of them...made the host helping us go  ) and to update our four-day tickets to six-day tickets (we didn't realize that it was an extra $6 per person and we figured if we only did a few rides, it would be worth it for so cheap). Since bell services had our luggage, we made our way to the monorail station and headed over to MK for a few go-rounds on IASW (the preferred ride of DGM because we can wheel her wheelchair right on), Mickey's Philharmagic, and Buzz Lightyear. Before we knew it, it was time for lunch!

We hopped on the resort launch to the Wilderness Lodge for our 2:20 ADR. I'd never been to the WL and it was gorgeous and the theming was lovely. I'd love to stay there sometime. We made our way to the WCC and it wasn't what I expected. It's a very open area (it opens up to the WL lobby) and it wasn't all that crowded (walk-ins would have had no problems).

We were quickly seated and greeted by our "cousin" Al. Cousin Al was fun and hilarious but he wasn't as over the top as some of the other servers, which we appreciated...we didn't want DGM to get freaked out...but then again, she doesn't phase easily.

I started with a vanilla shake, mostly because I saw pictures and there were sprinkles on top and I'm a sucker for rainbow sprinkles. DGM started with a strawberry-orange shake, and DM and DSis had diet Cokes (they can't function without four diet Cokes a day...I still don't get them LOL).

We put in our orders for our appetizers and our meal was very leisurely (the way we like it because we weren't really rushing to get anywhere). DM started with the Western Chips and Dips (Homemade Corn Torilla Chips with a bowl of freshly made salsa and queso dip). She liked it and it was my favorite of all of our appetizers. The cheese dip was a little spicy and the salsa was very tangy.

DSis and DGm both started with the salad. They both enjoyed it. My sister really enjoyed the dressing because she thought it was flavorful but very light.
P8100314.jpg

I started with the Cheese and Sausage Plate (cheddar cheese with sliced pork sausage, crackers, and barbecue dipping sauce). It was very heavy and I really didn't eat most of it. The sausage was good (but really heavy) and the cheese was warm. The BBQ sauce was really good, though. It was sweet, tangy, and just a little spicy. DM ate a lot of my appetizer and I ate a bit of hers.
P8100315.jpg

For our main courses, DM ordered the Chicken Salad (mixed greens with grilled chicken breast, cheddar cheese, candied walnuts, and honey-roasted walnut vinaigrette). She honestly didn't care for it. She thought it tasted alright, but I think it was because she found a bit of chicken still on the bone in her salad and it grossed her out a little.
P8100317.jpg

DGM had the Roast Chicken (served with coleslaw and mashed potatoes). She really enjoyed this. The chicken was really soft and she loved the sauce and the potatoes.
P8100318.jpg

DSis and I both had the AYCE Skillet (Smoked pork ribs, oven-roasted chicken and pork sausage, served with beans, seasonal vegetable, creamy coleslaw, mashed potatoes and fresh baked corn bread). It was...a lot. A lot of food I usually don't care to eat, but that's why I ordered it. I really wasn't that hungry. I tried the ribs, beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and corn bread and thought it was average fare. But I come from Chicago and ribs to me mean Carsons ribs and these weren't anywhere near the same level. My sister, the more "adventurous" eater (or, the normal one) tried everything else and enjoyed it. I just really wasn't *that* hungry (this became the mantra for many parts of our trip). Cousin Al was great with making sure we got refilled anything we needed (the mashed potatoes, corn, and beans went pretty quickly between DSis and I...they were really good).

None of us were really hungry for dessert, but since the plan (and the meals) were already paid for, we figured we'd get them and try them.

DGM had the Apple Carmel Pie (crumb-topped deep dish apple pie with vanilla ice cream) and it was one of her favorite desserts this trip. It was warm and tasty and pretty big. She liked it so much that she ate most of it even though she wasn't that hungry! I guess a good dessert can do that to you :rolleyes1

DSis and DM both had the Kahlua-flavored Chocolate Cake (chocolate mousse filling and fudge icing) and both thought it was very rich but very good.
P8100320.jpg

I had the S'More Cheesecake (NY Style Cheesecake on a Graham cracker crust topped with chocolate ganache and marshmallows). It was a little warmer than I like my cheesecake to be served but it was very tasty. I didn't end up eating too much of it because it was so heavy but I'd definitely order it again.

Overall, I felt when you go to WCC, it's more for the experience than it is for the food. I think we'd go back, but I think we'd probably order different things and we'd probably forego the appetizers (or split them...they're very big). I think the WCC excels at their desserts, but their regular menu is good but ordinary-tasting. None of us had the kind of zOMG experience here with any of our food.

I am really enjoying your reviews so far and love all your photos. I think you were spot on with your WC review. We felt the exact same way with our last visit there. Food OK, service good, wouldn't rush to go back, but was satisfied none the less. :)

I can't wait for your Ohana review and the rest....

Great reviews and pictures! I'm looking forward to reading the rest. We always hit WCC every trip for lunch, such a fun place. :)

You were right! Your reviews have resulted in extreme hunger! :thumbsup2 Can't wait for more. 3 pages of ADR's!!! :worship:

Great reviews so far - I agree with your opinion of WCC. The food is OK but it's all about the atmosphere - Wilderness Lodge is such a wonderful place to stay though :thumbsup2

Looking forward to more reviews :)

I'm in! I haven't read everything yet, but the first round of pics look great! Pitas yum!

Subscribing...thanks for sharing! :)

(wondering what kind of camera you used, my food pictures usually come out blurry)

Day 2: Alohaaaaaaaaa from Ohana!

After lunch at WCC, we grabbed a bus back to the GF to see if our room was finally ready (it was...FINALLY). We made our way to our room (a marina-view room in BPK, our favorite building). While DM and DGM unpacked, DSis and I went to Gasparilla's to get our mugs (included on the DxDDP). After a few hours of relaxing and shopping in our resort, we hopped on the monorail to the Polynesian for our 8:00 pm ADR at Ohana. Eating at Ohana on our first official night in Disney is a tradition for us, so making this ADR was a no-brainer, even though I wanted to mix up tradition and go somewhere else after I read about the menu change (more on this later).

So we hopped on the monorail at 7:25, thinking it would be enough time to get to the Polynesian. Wrong. After the MK, we were stalled for a good 15 minutes on the tracks with nothing other than "Waiting for signals," "Waiting for the next monorail to clear," etc. Around 7:40, they announced that the monorail ahead of us was having problems. Five minutes later, they announced we would be undergoing some saftey drills. Jigga wah? It was the longest monorail ride I'd ever been on and we didn't make it to the Polynesian until almost 8:10, 45 minutes after we left the GF.

We were late for our ADR, but the lovely hostess at Ohana (I don't remember her name but she was an older woman from NY) made sure everything was okay for us even though it was packed that night. We sat down to watch the Olympics for a bit before our buzzer went off and we were taken to our seats.

The hostess brought us some warm pineapple bread. It was satisfying in a comfort food warm bread kind of way, but beyond the slight sweetness, it was devoid of flavor.
P8100357.jpg

Our "cousins" came over to introduce themselves and take our drink orders (diet cokes for DM and DSis, iced tea for me, Sprite for DGM) and explained how the meal would work. The trio of sauces was brought over (I used them to give some flavor to the bread) and one of our cousins explained which sauce works best with each meat (Sweet and Sour works best with shrimp or pork, Peanut works best with turkey, Chimmichuri works best with steak).
P8100359.jpg

Out next came the salad (with one of the BEST dressings in WDW), chicken wings, and the potstickers. I don't eat chicken wings (DM loves them here and I've tasted the sauce and it was delicious), but the salad was crispy and the vinaigrette was light and slightly sweet. The potstickers were good, too, but you could tell they had been frozen and then reheated. They didn't taste fresh.

Not long after the appetizers came out, the side dishes came out. The broccoli was a bit soft for my liking. As for the noodles? I got REAMED out by another poster in a Potatoes vs. Noodles thread when the changes were first announced. Now having tried the noodles, my opinion hasn't changed. They, too, were devoid of any flavor and were a bit greasy. I really do prefer the potatoes. Are they authentic Polynesian fare? No, but neither is most of the other food on the menu at Ohana. DM and DSis thought the noodles were alright. DGM seemed to like them. I missed my cheesy potatoes :(

P8100363.jpg

The skewered meats came around next. Pork and turkey came around first, followed by the steak, and the shrimp made a late appearance for DM (the only one of us who eats shrimp). Everyone seemed to like the pork and turkey. DM said the shrimp were delicious. I only ate the steak (not a fan of turkey and I wasn't in the mood for pork, and I don't touch anything that comes from underwater with a ten-foot pole). The steak just wasn't good tonight. The sauce it was in tasted good. It was seasoned well. But it was very fatty and tough.

P8100365.jpg

Our cousins gave us a bit of time to digest before bringing out the best part of the meal: dessert! Coconut bread pudding a la mode with bananas foster sauce. Now, I don't like coconut OR bananas, but I love this dessert. The bread pudding was nice and hot and it melted the ice cream. YUMM-O! I even liked the bananas foster sauce!
P8100366.jpg

I really didn't enjoy this meal as much as the rest of my family did. I liked the old menu much better and the items that came over from the old menu (like the steak) just didn't taste as good as it did last time. I feel the quality of the food here (save for dessert) has really gone down since the last time we were here (May, 2007). I feel Ohana is kind of like WCC in that you go for the experience more than you do for the food.
