What do you like about okw? -- update!

Do all the rooms overlook the golf course? This alone would sell me! I have heard it is such a big resort... We usually stay at BCV or BWV and are used to that small spread out resort. We are also exploring the idea of OKW for the size of the rooms.. Is there a certain area that is better than others? We would want to be near main pool and area to fill mugs ect. In comparison is it more spread than CBR?

They do not all over look the golf course some overlook the waterway. We stayed at OKW our first trip and don't own there but choose it when ever possible. I think we have hit the cycle and stayed at every size room there, studio, 1-bed, 2-bed and grand villa. We have stayed in building 24 and 25, which are HH category I believe, as well as 46 and 47 and I think 50. I thought Turtle Pond had a refill station as well but I'm not sure as we have never used the refill mugs. I personally think most of the areas are fine. My kids are older now and could walk to Hospitalilty House from any of the rooms we stayed in but the buses all stop at the HH so you could always hop a bus. Love the size of the rooms! We are only a family of four but almost always travel with more. We were in a 2 bed with 2 teen age girls and 2 teenage boys this Feb and had no issues.

I think they told me that about 80% of the villas overlook the golf course (it may not be quite that, in actuality, but close). DH loves to golf, so we always request golf course view also.

We've been DVC members since 2008, but this coming November will be our very first stay at OKW in a 1BR. I have a 10yo son who loves to swim -- we take days off from the parks and just swim. We couldn't get an HH booking, so I'm wondering which section I should request. We like it quiet, but not too far from transportation, food and pools. (We usually have the quick service dining plan.) We definitely want to take the boat to Downtown.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. Sorry if this is considered hijacking the thread!

I love OKW! I've stayed there numerous times, and it's one of my favourite resorts. I love the laid back, spread out feel of the resort. The balconies are nice to sit on in the morning and enjoy breakfast while looking at the views. I usually stay in the Turtle Pond area, and get a view of a pond. I like the quiet pool in that area as well.

We stayed in a 1 BR in building 28. It was close enough to the main pool that even my 4 yo DGD found the walk to be perfectly acceptable.

How do i go about making a room request? Im desperate to get my 1 bed Studio with a Golf view rather than any other. Can it be done via email

We got back about a week ago so I wanted to describe our experience to help others considering OKW. As a reminder, we are a family of 5 (kids 12, 9, 4). We started by spending 5 nights in a one-bedroom refurbished room at the Boardwalk. It was fantastic! I know a lot of people complained about the decor but we really liked it. Anyway, we followed that by 4 nights at OKW in a one-bedroom. We were unable to get the HH category but I did request to be close to HH as the highlight for my kids is the slide at the pool (this is how they pick their favorite resorts, based on the slide!). However, we ended up with a room on Turtle Pond. Anyway, we enjoyed our time at OKW but I wouldn't rank it as one of our favorites. Most of the things we liked have already been stated by others:

1. The size of the rooms. This simply cannot be overstated. We felt like we were in an apartment! It definitely adds to the relaxation factor when everyone is able to spread out. For us, we will do a couple hours at the parks in the morning, come back for lunch, do the pool, and just hang out before going back out at night so this was a big deal because we do spend a decent amount of time in our room, especially in the summer when everyone needs a break from the heat/rain.
2. The resort definitely felt more laid back than the Boardwalk. It was a nice switch. The main pool never seemed as busy as the pool at the Boardwalk. However, there were still a lot of activities going on. My kids played ping pong for example.
3. There was a waitress serving drinks at the main pool. I'm guessing this is seasonal but it was great!
4. Pool slide: This is from my kids -- they said it's faster than the one at the Boardwalk.
5. Parking: Yes it was nice to park in front of our room especially after the hike from the Boardwalk parking lot.
6. The balcony: It was great to have such a huge space. I would often sit outside and read a book in the afternoon.

What we didn't like:

1. We had a terrible check in experience. It's a long story but after we finally got to our room (4:30), there was no tv remote. We had to call multiple times to have one delivered. There was also no blankets for the pullout and sleeper, only sheets. This was frustrating when we returned late with tired kids and couldn't make up the beds. We called and they only delivered sheets. Since it was 10:30, we actually got our own blankets out of our car and used those.
2. Olivia's: We had the worst service of our entire vacation here and the food was just OK. I wouldn't go back.
3. The boat: I thought this would be more convenient than it was. We had three dinners planned at Downtown because I thought it would be easy to do while at OKW. Since we weren't close to HH, we either had to drive to HH or hop on a bus to get to HH, then get on the boat. The boat drops off on the West side and while we don't mind walking at all, it's really inconvenient for those that want to get to the other side without walking (you have to wait for another boat and there was always a long line). It seems that it would be quicker to take the bus. After our first experience with the boat, we decided to drive each time. The new garage is great but the traffic was horrendous. Hopefully that will clear up when construction is done. Honestly, downtown is so packed with people (unless you go early in the morning), worse than any park, I'm not in any hurry to go back so for us, I wouldn't consider being close to Downtown that much of a benefit.
4. Our view. Honestly, I couldn't really tell what it was because there were huge trees hanging over us so we couldn't see anything. I could hear golfers off to the side and I know there was water, but there was literally nothing to look at but the trees on top of us. Some people I'm sure appreciate the privacy, but I definitely enjoyed our pool view at Boardwalk more.

So, overall it was a good stay and if it was the only resort available, I wouldn't be heartbroken. If we were taking other relatives and/or friends and all staying together I would definitely consider OKW because of the size. However, we definitely prefer the convenience that other resorts such as BLT or BWV offer. To us, being able to walk to a park is the most important factor and OKW doesn't offer that. So, it really comes down to what you are looking for in a resort. Again, it was nice and we enjoyed it but it was lacking the convenience factor.

Hope this wasn't too long-winded! I'm happy to answer any questions!

OKW is my home resort and I love it. BTW not all 1 BR are lock offs, some are dedicated 1 BR. The buildings from the Peninsula Road area and up have a second door to the master bathroom through the laundry room. So if you are in a 1 or 2 BR you don' t have to disturb anyone in the master bedroom to use the bathroom. I like the room sizes. (I am still trying to figure out how to retire there.) Turtle Pond is my favorite area. Quiet, nice pool, good views, good bus stop. Also being able to park right outside the room is great. I love Olivia's, good food, have always had good to great service there. Papa's Den (lounge next to the front desk) is comfortable and relaxing while waiting for the Magical Express. (Papa as in 'Papa Hemingway') I love the music at HH, the boat to DTD, bike rentals.

Thanks for coming back with the report, Nvrenoughdisney. As to the blanket situation for the sleeper sofa, did you look in the top of the closets? Not once in all my years as a member do I recall there not being extra pillows and blankets in the top of at least one closet. They do not make up the sleepers with more than sheets because of the bulk. They can easily close the sleeper sofas with only sheets on the bed.

Sorry your check-in and Olivia's had less than stellar service. Most unusual. I'm with NancyDVC, in that we have always, always had good to excellent service at Olivia's and since buying DVC in '93 I have found the guest service overall at OKW to be better than most other Disney resorts I have stayed at over 2 decades. Well, at least you know for your family now that OKW may not be the best fit for your family. I find folks either adore OKW or loathe it. Not a lot of middle-grounders for OKW. Glad you had a great vacation overall!

I do think that it can be just not knowing where to look for the blankets and pillows although I'm not saying that was the case here. I remember the first stay at BCV when they had gotten the new pull outs that store the pillows and blankets in a little cubby in the sofa. Others in my family were in the lockoff section and finally called me in to help find them. And I'm glad I had read here about the new style both there and at BWV otherwise I 100% know we would have been calling saying there weren't any. ::yes::

We are staying here, one of our home resorts, for the first time in December and now we really can't wait! BF loves golf and we found this resort to be the most beautiful on property. Really enjoying this thread so please keep posting experiences!

Yes I checked in all of the closets , sheets were there but no blankets. It wasn't a deal breaker by any means, just kind of annoying. As far as Olivia's was concerned, it was not the only disappointing service we had this trip. We were there for 9 nights and did a table service every night. Be our guest also had terrible service (I can't seem to recall the other restaurants right now!). In fact, part of me started to wonder if our tables in wonderland card had anything to do with it because the servers already knew up front they were getting at least 18%. Although we've been using TIW for years and I don't remember service this bad in so many restaurants. I will say Our waiter at the Blue Zoo by far blew every other server out of the water, he was amazing.

Again, the small glitches didn't make or break the resort for us. I did send an email to dvc member satisfaction and they called me right away. They were great. I wouldn't let those small things scare me away from trying the resort!

So glad to hear that Member Sat called you. And sorry no blankets were to be found. I would have been annoyed as well if it was late and my kids were sleepy and ready for that bed.

I've had TIW for quite a lot of years, and am happy to say we generally get great service everywhere. The last lousy service we got on property, and it was far and away the worst service we have EVER had at a WDW restaurant, was last year at Whispering Canyon at lunchtime. It was unbelievably bad and the occasional roving manager never even seemed to notice how badly our table of 6 was being neglected. The restaurant was almost empty so it wasn't because they were short-handed. I know how disappointing it is to get bad service at Disney. Especially if you have years of great service experience. Glad you still had a nice vacation.
