your taxes don't pay your mailman. I don't give mine anything as well, just wanted to clarify. they're actually allowed up to a $20.00 gift.

I give the garbage collector the same thing I give him throughout the year, more trash. Usually I give it to him in the trashcan, but sometimes I just put the bag by the road. The mail person gets my outgoing mail. That I usually put in my mail box. Sometimes I hand it to them personally. But not during these next few weeks. I don't wanna face them knowing I'm a cheap ******* who isn't gonna do anything for them durning the holidays.

Seriously crying here from laughter....read it to my DH who is staring at me blankly...guess you have to be here.

Mail: $20 gift card, usually for groceries. They cannot accept cash, but gifts up to $20 in value are okay. Not sure if we'll do it this year - I think our mail carrier changed and this one seems a little snippy.

Paper: Last year did a $15 gift card to Starbucks. Was going to give a $20 gas card this year, but still haven't gotten the card in with the paper with his/her address.

Garbage: Beer and Coca-Cola. Seriously - I put a case of each by the curb with a bow on it.

We have several mail carriers, so I don't even know who my regular carrier is supposed to be. I think it is the one who does his overtime first & then does his route - which means I am lucky to get my mail before 6pm!!

Trash guys - there are 4 different trucks that come by (recycling, trash, yard & large household appliances) - they all come by at different times. I can't stand outside all day waiting for them so I can hand deliver the envelopes. With my luck, if I put them on top of the trash - they would think they are part of the garbage & just dumped.

Newspaper - I have no clue who the carrier is. We get the paper, but we never know where in our yard it will be. Since the last time I called to complain, the paper has usually been in the driveway. But, it seems that more times than not, the paper is so far underneath the car, we have to move the car to get to the paper. And the carrier deserves a tip why?? When I first subscribed to the paper (& the neighborhood kids had the route), it was put between the screen door & the house door. Dry, readable & easy to find. The kids always got great tips. Now some adult comes by & it is a whole different story. Last year around Christmas the paper carrier left a card with a note you can mail gift to ...& left the address... Sorry, you want your tip - search the yard & maybe I'll leave it under the car or maybe I will wait until a really rainy day & just leave it in the driveway with out a plastic bag.....

Thanks for the post and clarification. People need to know that NO tax
dollars support the Postal Service. And small gifts are OK.

I was surprised to get a Christmas card from the Trash guy and the mailman when we moved here last year... It came a week before Christmas...
No Kidding... so we gave them each a gift card for a restaurant.

never got Christmas cards from the Trash guy nor the Mailman when we lived in California...just here in SW ILL.....

Not a thing considering today I watched my trash collector empty my neighbor on the left, drive right past my can which was about 10 feet away and empty the the neighbor on the right and then back out of the drive way, turn around and do the folks on the other side of the drive way (I'm in a townhouse and I was watching from my bedroom window upstairs). So I ran downstairs and jumped in the car and cornered him in another driveway (I tried to get his attention on the street from my car and he just ignored me so I had to let him back in a drive way and then I pulled in front of him blocking him from being able to pull out ) I got out of my car and went up to his door and told him he didn't empty my can and he said I must not have had it out . I told him I watched him and I wasn't going to argue with him and I expected him to come back and empty it or I would be calling the city of McKinney about him. He came back 10 minutes later.

Mail carrier - I would if I wasn't always getting my neighbors mail. I should get something for mail re-delivery.

I only give to my mailman and my dry cleaning gal.

I give my mailman $10 cash. I give my drycleaning gal $5 gift card to Dunkin's and a Lindt chocolate Santa ($4.). She does a great job.

I do not give to our trash man as we pay for it (its not through the town). I never ever even see them to give it to them if I wanted to.

I give the paper boy $20.

I give the mailman $20.

I give my dd bus driver $20.

I give my hairdresser $25.

Sanitation - I do not give anything - only because not only do I never see them (well once in a bloo moon) - I don't think it is ever the same guys. If I knew - they would get lotto cards or something also.

Wow, a friend of mine that retired from the Post Office told me they aren't allowed to accept any presents and definitely not money so I never even thought of giving them something. And we never see the same trash collectors every week (always different truck and they never get out anyway..just pick the supercan up with the arms on the truck, dump it, put it down and go).

Call me service insensitive.. I don't give them gifts.

Found this on another site;

This month's issue of Real Simple magazine has tipping guidelines in it. For mail carriers it says:

"You're not expected to give anything. If you have a personal relationship with your letter carrier or frequently receive packages, give a gift card of $20 or less. US postal carriers cannot accept cash or checks in any amount or gifts worth $20 or more. FedEx doesn't allow cash or a gift worth more than $75. UPS does not have a policy on accepting tips."

Nothing for any of them. I tip my newspaper carrier every time I pay the bill and I don't see why she needs an additional tip for throwing the paper out her car window.
