On another thread we were discussing the expense of a Disney trip and someone said "Well some people have fancy cars or clothes, but I spend my money on Disney!" - So I was thinking....

What do you "give up" to go to Disney?

Since starting my Disney jar and saving for trips, I have given up (pretty much)

Off the top of my head.........

1. Daily trips to Starbucks

2. I TRY not to spend as much on scrapbooking supplies

3. I don't go out to eat AS MUCH...probably only twice a week now
instead of 3 or 4.

4. New books (I go to 1/2 Price Books or the library now)

I can probably think of more, but I do these consiously to save
for trips.

We put off buying a new car and banked the money we saved on car payments (having just paid off our van) for Disney.

We don't eat out as much, save change, and budget our money for the mouse :dance3:

Instead of taking other vacations, we just choose to go to WDW. Some people take several different vacations. We take the same one multiple times.

We don't eat out much anyway and my car is 11 years old and the van is paid off - so we don't have those payments.

We put a set amount of money aside each paycheck, so it usually causes us to give up little things like not going out for dinner as much etc. But this year and next year to help with costs we're having a reduced christmas with everyone only get 1 thing they want/need. (some people even getting them a month or 2 after x-mas)

But it's worth it to go back to disney and do our first cruise.

Whenever we get checks, etc... for birthdays or refunds or whatever ... we say it goes in the Disney Fund! I have been buying less stuff from catalogs and less from Bath & Bodyworks (LOVE THAT STORE!) so as to have more savings for Disney. But it sure is hard to do! :sunny:

I only take one real vacation each year and it's normally to WDW. I like going towards the end of the year, since it gives me the chance to put a little aside each month to pay off the trip. I try not to eat out so much for lunch (now that it's getting colder, it won't be that difficult to want to stay in), don't buy alot of dvd's anymore (got Netflix) and just try to cut back on spending on things I really don't need.

my DBF is actually paying for this whole cruise and WDW trip as a bday present so all i have to worry about is spending money :D:D:D

But still as a fulltime student only working part time I save my money by eating out only once a week, try to limit my shopping (TRY is the key word), not spend so much on "entertainment" (movies, nightclubs etc), started filling up my own water bottles (hey every dollar counts!), and try to limit my driving so i dont spend so much on gas!!

Every Dollar saved is another dollar to spend on your vacation! :D:D:D

We hardly ever go out to eat. Our "big" thing is ordering at Pizza Hut & having it
delivered to the house!! We only have 1 car payment at a time (although that may change soon with a teenage driver needing a newer vehicle for college next year). We do not go to clubs & we do not smoke or drink alcohol (well maybe a little while on vacation). We do not splurge & we save all our change. My 2 DS's
put all their change into our Disney vacation vase. One son has paper route & gets lots of nickles, dimes & quarters & my oldest son also puts all his change from buying meals at his part time job into the vase. We have Netflix for the lowest price (1 DVD at a time) & usually get 4 DVD's a month for 9.99. I buy alot of cleaning supplies & beauty products from Walmart. We also have a new Target in the area. Where I have 2 boys my youngest gets to use the clothes that his older brother wore. Although now that my oldest is not growing so much he is keeping his clothes now but I still have clothes that he outgrew. We just try to save as much as possible & I told them where we will be going to Disney for 10 days (HS graduation gift for 18 year old) that Christmas this year will not be the same as prior years (less gifts). I also have a Christmas Club account at my bank & so much goes automatically into this account every pay period. In October they transfer the total into my savings account.

New clothes on a whim.
Getting my nails done.
Brand name labels on just about everything unless it's on sale.
Birthday/Christmas gifts for myself.

I think that's it.

I've given up:
-eating out
-spending $4 on a Starbucks latte every day
-clothes
-movies
-extra calories (so I can have at least one Dole Whip....mmmm, Dole Whip....)

A big thing is eating out so much, it's amazing how much $$ is wasted.

I try not to go on "wandering" trips to Walmart or Target. I come out w/ $100 of junk I don't need. I buy used books and not new. (and then sell them after I'm done intead of hoarding them) I spend money on Netflix but it saves me money by keeping me home watching movies instead of out shopping for entertainment.

I really wanted a new car in addition to the paid off Jeep, but I can pay for over a weeks vacation with what I would spend in payments & insurance so I decided against it. That was strictly a Disney-minded decision.

I spend a lot of time selling stuff I have or reselling deals I find on Craigslist for WDW spending money.

My mom doesn't buy a new car yet.
its been paid off for like 4 years so without a car payment, its been really easy to go to Disney.
& if I'm offered another vacation, i don't take it.
Like, I was invited to the national Young leaders Conference in Washington, DC and I probably should have gone because it would have looked nice on my college application, but I would rather go to Disney World.
Also, my mom and I always just ask for money for christmas or birthdays to put in the WDW fund.
We don't really do anything out of the ordinary...

I don't go out half as much as i did before i started the disney obsession!
I also do loads of overtime at work-every month i save it in the mickey money account!

We dine on tree bark and lawn clippings, plus we reuse our mouthwash. Saves bundles.

Oh my gosh HappyBratpack I DO love Target and it is easy to walk in and drop a hundred. I try not to go in, but right now I am trying to get my Disney pictures processed. So, now when I go in the store, I do not grab a basket---that is so dangerous.

We do not do too much during the year because my husband works eleven to seven and then he works another job. Our car is paid for and I do not buy clothes too often. Luckily I work for a distributor of magazines and books and I can get those free or at a fantastic discount.

I take surveys for cash and I bank that money. I try to merge my car trips so I do not have to buy too much gas.

The only thing that eats up my pocketbook are my children and school fund raisers. Everytime I look up, I am having to send money to school. :sad2:

We too eat out much less often. That means starting meals in the crockpot before I leave for work for DH and DS17 -- crazy work schedules here. I get home hours later than either of them. I rarely shop for new clothes. Kohl's has a 15% off coupon for first weekend in November and that will tempt me. DH brings me books home from the recycle part of our transfer station, and I rent $1 DVDs from Redbox at the local supermarket. I will just have enough $ to pay for our Feb cruise on the due date! Cutting it a little too close, but it will work.

From last september until december, me and my DW are cutting our expenses. No movies, no go out to eat, we play bowling every two weeks instead each sunday, and in general nothing out of our budget.
We have a create a method for save some money, we put all the $10 pesos coins (about a dollar) in a piggy bank, and at the end of a year we have saved more than 600 dollars, great for shopping!!

I retired in June and was offered another job in August. I agreed to take this job if it was only half time.
I am using all of the money I make between now and Christmas to pay for my families Disney trip.
