Well, some of you may know my story behind our new puppy. Well, things are going much better with him(Thank You claritin) and i was just wondering what kind of dry food you guys feed your dogs. He was fed purina puppy chow at the breeders which I understand is total garbage. so we're looking to switch. Also, for those of you who have switched, how long did you do it over? I was thinking 1 week would be a good transition period. TIA

Our Vet recommended Nutro which we get at Petco. We get my dog the mini-chunk for smaller dogs and he loves it. I have no idea what he was fed at the shelter but we got him at 6 months and started him on the Nutro and he has been eating it ever since.

Good Luck!

Nutro Ultra - it was recommended by the vet. We mixed it with their old food and gradually weened them off the old food. It took about a week .

My corgi eats eaukenuba puppy for medium dogs... oh and I can't spell!

Jazzy had Nutro for about 3 years.
the kennel we use when we vacation actually charges extra if we bring in food for her to be given ($1 per meal). So we switched her over to what the kennel was serving (hehe)...which is Eukanuba (sp?)

didn't take her long to adjust...we didn't even mix it. she's a picky eater...meaning, she picks all day.

and we never got her started on wet food...so that's good.

although - she does love pizza.

Our pug started on Puppy Chow too - I got him off Purina anything as soon as I could - our vet recommended Wellness to us - he eats the WhiteFish and Sweet Potato blend - good for a pug coat. :) He loves it.

Took about 1-2 weeks to do the switch for us.

We feed our labs Diamond products.... we were using lamb and rice, but we have had supply issues with that so we have switched to premium. Maintenance works fine too. Some swear by purina - just find out what works for you and your dog.

Good luck!! :)

We feed our Lab Beneful. The breeder had her on Diamond, but that brand is way too hard to find around us.

We also took about a week or a tad longer to switch her over.

The vet told us Nutro was great food so that's what we've used since he was a puppy.

Innova. I buy this at a feed store. There are a lot of good foods out there (and bad). What you need to do is an internet search regarding pet foods that use "human grade" products in their food. The problem with some of the pet foods is that they use animals for the feed that were too sick or not up to par with the standards of what we would feed the human population. Much of it is rendered, which causes carcinogens. So, just research the brands that use human-grade meat to make the food and you will be okay.

We feed our German Shepherd Iams large breed chunks. He ate Alpo for years until the vet told me he was too thin. I switched to Nutri something that was a high calorie food for active dogs. That was really expensive, so I switched to the Iams (still expensive, but worth it).
You should mix the old food and new stuff for a while, decreasing the amounts of the old food every feeding.

Eukanuba Reduced Fat for my Norwegian Elkhound (they tend to gain weight easily). She's a picky eater, but she likes this dog food.

We also had good luck with Canidae (sp?), but it became harder and harder for us to find.

Many of the food listed are great foods, one important thing to look on the label is the meat should be in the first 3 ingredients and also should not say any by-products of any kind. Those are the unmentionables that are left over such a beaks, etc. My little pup did great with Innova.

Purina and pedigree puppy food are both great. We use pedigree lamb and Rice for our puppies.

That's funny because I've heard just the opposite. We were doing purina puppy chow, but I was told to look at the top 5 ingredients. there should be 2 meats(with chicken meal being better than chicken, etc.) no corn and wole grains better but not prefered. Am I misinformed again?

Trapper eats Science Diet light/adult/large breed formula. DH refuses to quit feeding him table scraps (much to my dismay!) so I have put him on diet food to compensate for the other crap he gets fed. DH can't stand throwing food out when the dog can eat it.

We feed our Goldendoodle Canidae. It's all natural and has no grain fillers. I got a little brain-washed :teeth: on a site that is obsessed with all natural dog food! There are tons of web sites that list all the bad things found in a lot of dog foods and you can spend a lot of time looking into all the problems that are supposedly caused by the cheap food.

Below is a link to the Canidae site. If you click on the testimonials link, you will see a lot of great stories! They even have pictures that show how much better their dogs looked after switching to Canidae.

Thnak you so much, I forgot about that one. I was looking at getting Merrick but it is more expensive than canidae and actually, canidae ingredients look better to me.
