...with your old computer parts; mouse, keyboard, monitors???

I have a 7 year old desk top that no longer works. I replaced it with a laptop. The flat screen monitor, mouse and keyboard still works. What do you do with them?:confused3

Recycle them for less fortunate people? Most computer parts actually contain real gold (even though very small), so you may be able to sell them for $ though I wouldn't expect a lot

My neighbor suggested this but honestly, I would not know where to begin or how much to ask. Donating it is a good thought too! Thanks.

The hard drive I take apart and destroy all circuit boards (into a million pieces), and throw them out 1 at a time, this way there is no chance of anyone getting any info that was stored in the pc:thumbsup2

I have packed keyboards, monitors etc for charity pickup. But with the harddrive- that I have always destroyed the memory and then took the rest into an electronics recycler.

Many towns have a recycling program specifically for computer components. Call your village hall and see if they do, or if they can recommend another town close by. If you live in an unincorporated area contact the next largest town/city next to you. DH just took a bunch of stuff in today.

You can also ask about recycling programs for other things: t.v..... leftover paint....

What would I do with the monitor, keyboard, and mouse? I would set them up on a desk so I could plug them into the laptop and use them for photography. Can't do photography on a laptop screen. The colors change a lot depending on the angle of view with a laptop. It doesn't with sitting in a chair looking at an external calibrated monitor at the correct ergonomic level.

You don't want to know how they "recycle" computers though. Just a couple years ago 20/20 (or a show like that) did an expose on the industry. These companies pack freighters full of electronics and ship them to third world countries. There, little old ladies, literally, little old ladies beat on them with hammers and rocks to get to the tiny bit of precious metals in them. Some of it they have to melt to get to the good stuff. The level of toxins in the air, ground, and water in these towns was unbelievable. Unless something have changed, there is really no good recycling option for electronics. I would just break up the memory and throw it away.

I believe it's illegal to throw electronics like computer parts in the trash. They have to go to a designated place that cities set up, otherwise this stuff ends up in the landfill and contaminates the ground water.

Check the manufacturers website. Many offer a recycling program.

I personally use our cities free program so check your city, county or state or even neighboring cities!

The option is: poison our ground or poison the ground of some third world country. Not really a good option.
