What do you do?

I am a photographer. I do all kinds of photo shoots but my most of my time is spent on weddings. I love it, and it's great $ BUT I'm looking into going back to school while still doing photography. Lately I have come to realize I would like a "real" career and a nice 401K. I see myself never putting my camera down, but I feel like I need something else as well.....

I'll throw my hat in! I work in Forensics for our local Police Dept. I do a lot of crime scene work and compare fingerprints. I noticed a few 911 dispatchers and would like to let them know that those of us in the field really appreciate what you guys do. Thanks!

Before that I worked in a clinical hospital laboratory running all those tests that your doctors order. Little too much sitting in one room doing the same thing day after day... I like what I do now more.

I became serious about photography about seven years ago when I started working for the Police Dept. Since then, I have come a long way and now I teach classes for the new hires. Furthermore, I am in the process of developing a photography side business. Haven't made much money yet but I have some stuff coming up that should change that. Wish me luck!

Thank you, that's nice to hear once in a while. Wow crime scene work, now that's something I couldn't do. I don't envy that you guys have to actually see "it". It's much easier to listen to it on the phone then to actually see it in person. IMHO I think that the whole Law Enforcement, be it dispatcher, officer, crime scene workers, and so on, are unappreciated .

I didn't read every post on the thread...but I feel like an oddball here career-wise:rotfl:

I'm a pharmacist...good $$

I love to take lots of pics...great fun

Wish I could switch the two:rotfl2:

I am an Environmental Compliance Officer for the City of Atlanta. I make sure that builders and developers don't pollute the streams and rivers to much so that our children have drinking water. It is rewarding while frustrating at the same time.

Been photographing for a while, mostly sports and Disney stuff.

I'm a software engineer with Cisco Systems. I, along with 3 other folks, maintain the internal web server infrastructure (Apache web servers and a collection of java application servers) for Cisco engineers. I'm what is sometimes called "overhead".

I spent most of my career as a web designer. The last two years I as the Creative Director for a national home improvement franchise. The downturn in housing hit them pretty hard and I was laid off back in October.

So now I'm trying to go pro. I've shot a few weddings and found it to be much more enjoyable than I originally thought it would be. In fact, I like it quite a lot. I'm branching out into portraits and some commercial work now. It's not making me the kind of money I was getting before but it's growing and I enjoy it. In this economy I don't guess I can ask for too much more. :)

does sit on the couch , watch hgtv and occasionally take a quick jaunt to take photos count as a job:confused3 ? if so that's me;)

Hi,
I'm also mainly a lurker here...
I'm not an IT person, but I'm married to one ;) I'm a nurse.

I have also work in banking (while going to college), and Medical Records. Have degrees in business, med records administration and nursing. I recently graduated from a nurse anesthesia program (so I should be studying instead of lurking...), and need to take my board certification exam (so I can start having some income:rolleyes:).

I love photography and want to take some classes to learn more, and supplement my basic knowledge. I think I'm more interested in learning good technique and then being creative with that knowledge. Hopefully, I'll get to do it (once the darn boards are behind me!).

I'm stress, can you tell?:crazy2:

I'm a WAHM and own my own business designing invitations for weddings, birthdays, birth annoucements, etc. and with that comes some wedding planning.

My sister was supposed to be the photographer in the family. She was majoring in photography in college but one day decided nope - not going to do it. I began with a major in philosophy and ended with a BA in business management and minor in philosphy. I was the office manager/marketing manager for one of the big job search engines out there; after being laid off from them ("Yeah! We're #1, now you're fired!") I stayed home with my DD, 4 mos at the time, couldn't find a job and when I found out DS was on the way, began working on setting up my business. With the birth of my kids, came my interest in photography and I've been asked to do some wedding and pictures of children. I'm not sure if I could turn this into a business for me as I think I still have so much to learn.

I have already posted in this thread but I thought I'd share a photo or two of what it is I do. I rarely take any of my photo equipment into my shop because engraving creates lots of small particle dust and plastic chips which would not be very camera/lens friendly. The machine was done running and not blowing chips around so I figured I could safely get a few pics. I run plates like this in sheets and then apply the adhesive and cut them apart. This is just one of the many different custom legends I make.

My day job is as a mounted policeman in England. This is my last horse, Roman.

But during public disorder I can be called upon in my secondary role as a police Evidence Gatherer. Which means that dressed like this....

The first shot would be used to identify him and the second to convict for the offences commited by hurling a petrol bomb at police. They could be taken several hours, or sometimes days apart, and might be the only useful shots out of hundreds taken. I've worked at G8 summits, anti-war protests at US airbases in the UK, football matches and race riots in England.
These were taken during a training exercise. He's not really a bad lad, just a colleague! The funny blurring effect is rain on the lens which I've attempted to wipe off with soaking wet leather gloves! It also plays havoc with auto focussing so it's all at manual.

We aren't trained to take perfect images, just set to Auto on a D2 and fire away! Sometimes if I'm feeling adventurous I set it to P or even Shutter priority. :thumbsup2

Graeme, what a fab job.

I have been looking into joining the police force myself.

are there any/many female mounted police? when ever i see them they always seem to be men?..

Humberside have a few female mounties, but only a small unit. (8 I think). West Yorks are your next nearest and they have about 20 officers, again quite a few ladies.
It is difficult to get into as there are so few places and always a lot of interest. You need to be in the police first and then specialise. I did a few years in uniform, then about four as a detective before I got in. Worth the effort though!

I am a Flee Farmer. Business is really slow right now but I hope it starts.......ok, just joking. I am now and have been a cop for 20 years. I started in 1989 with the San Diego County Sheriff and moved to Chandler Az in 1994. Before you all ask, "Why would you move from San Diego to Chandler Az"? I did it for my wife. That and the fact that I had to get out of Southern California...to many people and to much money needed to live there. I have done Patrol, Community Policing, Bike Patrol, Gang Detective, Narcotics Detective, Intelligence Detective and now I am a Technical Investigator. That basically means that I am in charge of all the technical aspects of gaining evidence for investigations. Cameras, body wires, GPS's, ect.....5 to 10 more years and I am done.....hopefully 5.....need more time for Disney Travel.
