What do you do with your cash and credit cards when flying?

Wondering where everyone keeps their valuables while going through security?

Can I keep cash and credit cards on my person in a pocket in my shirt or undershirt going through airport security? I had a pouch that went around my neck and they made me take that off last time. I don't really like the idea of putting them in my bag, and having that be separated from me. Just wondering what everyone else does.

Nope, nothing can remain on your person. It all needs to go in the carryon bag. It's not out of my sight other than when it's going through the scanner...and no one can touch it then! People really aren't going through your stuff at this point!! Just put your wallet deep down in the carry on. That way, someone would have to rummage through it in order to get anything of value.

keep your wallet/cash/credit cards tucked away in your carry on.
you cannot walk through security holding your wallet or having it in a pocket or anything.
its better for it to be in your carry on rather than just tossed in a bin.

In my purse. Everything goes into my purse or carry on, even my shoes. Zip it up, put it through then on the other side i can just grab my bag and find somewhere else to get "dressed" again.

btw i've never had my bag come out the other side of the scanner before i'm standing there waiting for it.
not sure how someone is going to steal your money in your carry on when its in the scanner.

You aren't separated from your items. You put them on the belt and pick them up off of the belt.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate all the responses.

Actually, I have had TSA sort of pull me away from my things a couple of times, and I am not so much afraid that someone will rifle through my things, but more nervous someone will just take my whole bag and walk off with it while I am occupied with them. The last couple of times I was patted down and wanded after the scanner, IDK if it's because I have had a few major operations and have artery clamps that come up on X-rays and they want to make sure it's not metal or that I'm concealing something? I just wish I could hold onto my wallet.

That is brilliant. I always end up juggling carry on, purse, 3-1-1 baggie and two shoes, trying to get out of everyone's way.

I just went through and TSA requested everything removed; even paper receipts. I was okay with my watch on. This was Sanford.

My money and credit cards were in a protected hard case wallet, in my purse which was in the backpack. I was fine going through. The youngest 10 had to take off his jacket with a zipper, but could leave his shoes on. It was so cute because he is almost as tall as me at 10 and the agent asked his age to him, not parents.
I had one over 18 with out a Drivers license, but had a PassCard to drive into Canada and not a question asked.

Ive been taken aside and wanded/patted down many times ( titanium knee) but I've never been out of sight of the scanner with my belongings. I've probably been on close to a hundred trips requiring a security clearance and haven't had so much as a bobby pin go missing. I don't think you need to worry as long as you don't leave your wallet in plain sight.

Even if separated from your luggage it would be difficult to take. Also realize any person going through screening is most likely a fare paying passenger so it is not an area where there are a lot of scams going on. If you are worried about someone taking your bag accidentally, put some ribbon etc. on it will standout. Don't forget you need your ID so I wouldn't bury my wallet.

Eh....yeah, sometimes you can be.

Memorable trip through MCO (probably) last January. DH got Pre so our under-12 son went with him. I went through the normal line. I don't go through the naked machines, so I get patted down.

I had stood in line, listening to a wannabe standup comedian (along the angry lines of Lewis Black) TSA agent scream at everyone that we're in public, it's a public place, there are people around, that we should not just let our bags go through the scanner until the scanner person was ready for it. On and on and on.

And of course his colleagues were NOT doing the line that way. Put the bag through, do NOT wait for it to be your turn.

Anyway, I get up there, with the bag 100% out of my sight, and say that I don't go through the scanner, and the JERK of an agent left me standing there, on the other side of the scanners as my bag was, for nearly 10 minutes. I stood, smiling, wondering where my bag was (and shoes and 311 bag etc), while trying to get his attention, catch his eye, let him know that my bag was totally separated from me at this point, and he wouldn't let me catch his eye. He didn't call for a female agent, either. It was awesome. He was the best. (ha ha ha) Finally, around 7 minutes from the start of this, he called out for a female agent for me. She was there immediately. I said that I had been separated from my stuff for a seriously long amount of time (in security-land), and she could not have cared less.

So let's see...I'm a good guy, but pretend I'm a bad guy. I've let my bag go through to an area I'm not in, and it's been over there, on its own, for that long. Nice, eh?

So I was reunited, patted down, and moved along my way.

It's not the only time I've been 100% out of sight from my stuff, either. But that was the most obnoxious time.

Since the OP has medical stuff that causes her to be patted down, it's entirely possible she could be separated, too.

So bury the wallet deep in the bag. Hope you're taller than I am so you can try to keep on eye on things.

Lol. I am probably not taller than you are, I'm 5'2" if I stand up straight. :D
I wasn't going to bring it up, but yes, there have been other times I have been separated from my things. Another one that comes to mind is when I once tested positive for explosives and had my stuff taken from me (and then it was all pulled apart and thoroughly searched), and I was sent to another room with a female agent and got quite a more thorough pat down than I ever wanted. I DO NOT like to be touched and that was really not good. My anxiety is already in full swing when I travel, and after that whole episode, it just makes me even more nervous. I hate traveling and flying. Three quarters of the times I have flown, I have been singled out for additional security. Seriously, I have no clue what the deal is. They have even pulled me out to be screened again once I changed planes, before the connecting flight..... :/

I had it happen once. I got pulled for a pat down and my purse was sitting there on the belt, someone could have grabbed it. I even said "can I grab my purse"? No.

I've gone through sone dubious security checks in certain countries and I've always managed to keep my passport and boarding passes held visibly in my hand regardless of the type of security scan being used. In North America, it all goes deep into my carry on bag.

Hi mum. Just curious if you carry a card saying you have a knee replacement and if this helps? I am having my left knee replaced early next year.

Nope. My doctor stopped giving them out years ago because they don't alter what happens at security anyway. Since I know that I will always set off an alarm, I just tell them before I go thru the metal detector. They either have me go thru the body scanner- ( which is faster) or do the wand/Pat down. The card won't change that.

good to know. Here in Buffalo we have the full body scanners now.

my mom has both knees replaced.
she does not have a card but she just lets them know and they do do a quick wand after the body scanner/metal detector and then she's on her way.

as long as you let them know they don't take issue with it.
i remember the first time my mom flew after having a knee replacement the alarm kept going off and she didn't understand.
them some lady behind her went through and she said i have a knee replacement. naturally my mom starts "yelling" i have a knee i have a knee! it was hilarious.
