What do you do with unopened food/water?

It kills me to think Housekeeping has to toss all the unopened food/water and drinks when we check out, but we can't bring it on the plane, there's no place to donate the food and I certainly don't want to leave it in the trash room with a 'free' sign (yuck). It would be nice if we had a pantry area we could drop things off at in the villas for incoming guests to use, but that requires space and maintenance, so I'm sure it won't happen.

Need ideas!

Many people post here with a message that says "anyone arriving at XYZ resort on xx/xx/xxxx - free food/water available".

We've had people knock on our door and gives us stuff on the day they were checking out.

We give it away to anyone that will take it. The worst that happens is it still ends up in the trash.

I still feel bad about all the food we left after our tornado interrupted HHI visit a month ago. We left HHI about 11pm so there was no choice because we didn't bring a big enough cooler and it would be rude to knock on doors. We easily left 100 bucks worth of food and drinks but the priority was to get home. We left a big tip for mousekeeping btw.

Take the stuff over to check-in, look for a family/group checking in, and bless them/ask if they want it. We have been pixiedust: multiple times by this happening to us including soda, beer, water, and chips.

We did that with a case of bottled water last year. Someone gave it to our friends before they left, our friends gave it to us, as they flew home a couple of days before we left, and we put up a message on this board the night before we left. We drove the Prius last year, so we had NO extra room :lmao:

The lucky winner PM'ed me, and I was able to leave the name with Bell Services with the water.

We leave it in the room and let housekeeping do theyre thing.

We walked down to the pool on the day of checkout, found a family and asked if they wanted it.

Worked like a charm.

we've stopped families in the hallway as they were following bell services (obviously checking in) and given them unopened food/drink.

bell services always gets the bottled water tho - they really, REALLY appreciate it!!

so far, we haven't had to throw unopened items out (we don't have much room left to store much more in our OL:rolleyes1.).
btw, we used to leave laudry deter and softener in the laundry room for anyone who wanted it.

So Bell Services can accept donations of leftover items but Mousekeeping cannot? What's up with that?

Bell Servies is an outside contractor, Mousekeeping isn't.

That said, I've always given unopened food and drink to Mousekeeping. They always seem grateful. I have no idea whether or not they throw it out as soon as my back is turned.

I believe that I've read on here that mousekeeping is allowed to take/keep unopened food and drinks that have been left behind.

gosh we always leave the unopened food for mousekeeping thinking that they could take it with them! that really stinks to think it just went in the trash. we stayed at the treehouses in january and had SO many leftovers and we thought for sure mousekeeping would take it.

next time i'm bringing it to the lobby and giving it to people checking in and/or bell services.

Bell Services is NOT an outside contractor. They are Disney employees. Valet is an outside contractor.

Things that will not spoil go into any empty open space in my Owner's Locker. Food I bag up and leave a note for Housekeeping. Water is given to bell services.

And pool noodles are passed on to a family at the pool.

Great ideas here - like the idea of finding a family checking in to give our unopened items to. Posting here on the Misc board is a good idea too, but could be a hit or miss. :)

I was told by our housekeeper that they are not allowed to do anything other then toss the items.

You are correct in regards to DVC and Deluxe hotels. For values they are contractors, which is where people get confused.

we've passed out to other families in the hall!!! when are you going? maybe our trips line up and we can pass off to each other! :lmao:

I heard that on my last trip. I was leaving the room with bell service and mentioned that I had unopened soda and juice. He said "housekeeping" will use it as long as it's not opened.
