What do you do with the momentos that you don't scrap?

It was suggested that I post my question in this forum (that I didn't even know existed)

I have a lot of scrapbook stuff. I call myself a great scapbook supply collector. I love doing it. But, I don't have the time, space, or money to really keep doing it. Plus, we are trying to cash flow our Adult trip and not take away from our checking account at all.

My dh is selling several pulling tractor parts that he really hates to get rid of. I know it's hard for him. My scrap stuff has been in totes for a couple years now.

I went to Downtown Disney to the scrap store and bought a ton of stuff there too. I also have quite a bit of creative memories stuff.

But, when just a little while ago I opened up a tote, I came across all the stuff from our last wdw trip. Like the wrist bands, tickets, crown from the p&p parts, the pamphelt from the BBB ect...It makes me want to scrap book!! But, I know it's just seeing all the stuff.

So, my question is....for those of you that don't scrap or even those who do, what is another way to keep the momentos and stuff, without doing a scrapbook? I want to have a plan for these things and not throw them by the wayside.

If my DH is selling something he loves for our trip, I need to also. And the brain part of me, knows that it will sit there if I decide not to sell it. It's just my heart that is sentimental.

Thanks!

Well... one of the main reasons that I scrap is to have a home for all of those "treasures" that I can't bear to part with, so maybe I am not the person to be answering this. But I can think of a few things that might be helpful.

If you are putting your photos into regular albums, you could put the bits and pieces you are keeping into one of the photo slots (either loose, mounted to a piece of paper, or in an envelope). Another thing that I have done for my Mom in the past is to glue a manila envelope in side the front cover of a photo album. All of the trip paraphenalia can go in the envelope.

If you are talking about "large" items, if you can part with them, maybe you could take a picture of them before you get rid of them.

If you have space, you could do a "box a year" system. Put a small or medium size box aside at the start of each year... put all of that year's treasures in it. At the end of the year label it and store it until you want/need to see the things in it. You could even go a step further an have a large envelope for each month of the year in the box. I did something like that when my kids were little and I KNEW that I would lose track of things before I got around to scrapping them. Everytime a special event (like a birthday) was coming up, I would label a large envelope and put it somewhere handy (like the kitchen). As notes and birthday cards came along, I put them in the envelope (along with a copy of their b.day party invitation, a plate and napkin from whatever their theme was that year, etc) When the occasion had come and gone, I sealed the envelope and put it in the "special" box I kept for that particular child. When I was ready to scrap the event (in some cases MANY years later), I just opened the box and pulled out the appropriate envelope. I had everything I needed (except the photos) ready to scrap!! The system worked well for me for scrapping, but it would also work as just a filing system of sorts.

Building off of pjilla's idea. If you want to just keep a regular photo album, you can supplement the album pages with page protectors (for menus or other large items), baseball card protectors for those smaller items (room keys, wrist bands). There are page protectors of all different sizes, that you can buy by the sheet. Check out a comic book store, or a sports card store. Full sheets you can get an an office supply store.

Really, if you'd add a few pockets of journaling too, those photo albums would count as scrapbooks in my eyes.

I keep all three - photo albums, scrapbooks and a manila envelope for each trip (dated in the top right corner and filed in a bankers box by date). After 40+ trips in a decade, I don't scrap all my trips any more, just the highlights as the spirit moves.

I definitely support a pp who suggested taking photos of things and then getting rid of them. You have no idea how much that will help you discard things. It helped me "let go" of tons of toys and leftovers from my childhood...various "collections" of things that I couldn't let go of.

I don't know if this really solves your problem...but you could complete a shadow box for each trip...a handful of photos, a crown, a few pins, the "Top Ten" list of what you did. There would be room for some of your larger/3D items. Then you can feel like you scrapbooked part of it and it would be something that you could hang in a special corner of your place.

Hmmm...that is such a good idea that I may do it too! HTH!!!
