Let me preface by saying I've worked over 20 years and have always gotten along w/bosses. Some I even consider friends and keep in touch w/now years later.

Now (the last 3 years), I've had an inept boss but have just kept my nose down and done my job. Others have complained (even other bosses). This year, I agreed to go full-time with the agreement that it was a temporary one-year stint to help out. Of course, now that it's one year, he doesn't remember. I sat in a meeting w/a number of superiors who all remember the conversation, but he won't budge. I haven't fought hard for it as I know someone else in the same job who NEEDS part-time due to her family situation. She can't get it either and will now be unemployed because of this.

Well, about a week and a half ago, I asked in an email if a decision would be made soon (and I also sent it to the other superiors who were in that original meeting last year). I got back a scathing email from this guy calling me names and what-not but never answering my question (and yes, he sent it to ever other superior).

Good news, we are hiring a new director soon who should know more. I fear, though, that this guy will cloud this new person's judgement of me. I also fear that I am treading thin water now when I ask "but what is your answer". All of our head office leadership has resigned within the last few weeks and we have no one in charge in the near future.

So, what would you do?

Do you have an HR Director? A copy of your email and the bosses reply needs to be in their hands. He obviously is in need of managerial counseling, but there also seems to be some kind of big shake up if the big guys are leaving.

I would scope it out and ask a trusted manager why. If they don't really give you a satisfactory answer, it may be time to leave. I've worked for two companies that went under. It wasn't MY fault! Decide if you would feel better getting out while you can and finding something else or if you would prefer to stick it out to the bitter end when there might be severence involved. Assuming of course that is what is going on.

I'm guessing you did not get your agreement in writing since there should be no issue then. Again discuss with HR and put your understanding of the agreement in writing and ask it be placed in your file with a notation that your boss will not acknowledge it.

Good Luck!

well, unfortunately, we can never "go under" as it's a school district. We're in horrible financial shape, but that doesn't mean we ever "go out of business".

I've had at least a dozen people (other supervisor types) confirm to me that they think this guy is a doo-doo-head...but I already knew that!

Really, I can work full time now that my kids are in school or I can work part-time (in a position that I built and love). I guess I just wish I was starting summer on a different note.

Good news is that my building supervisor is a wonderfully supportive guy and has said he would help me in this and work with me to get whatever I need. What I need is a new director!
