What do you do when you can't sleep?

I just lay there and figure, eventually I will fall asleep. If not, at least I am resting.

I usually take a combo of benedryl and melatonin but it has quit working for me. I plan to make a doctors appointment next week and ask for something stronger. It's either that or take up heavy drinking. I'm afraid of ambien thanks to another thread. What else have the insomniacs on this board tried?

Go make a Facebook account... ;)

Im surprised you can't sleep... Most people I know were walking dead the first trimester.

When I'm pregnant, I'm exhausted a lot during the day, but for some reason I have a hard time sleeping at night. I think it's hormones because I tend to do it at certain times of the month, too. Weird.

I've had insomnia for years that I've had no luck treating- I've tried soo many different medications, cutting out caffeine, etc. all the tricks and nothing helps.

I slept like a baby when I was pregnant with DS1. :cloud9: I slept like crap with DS2. :rotfl: :headache:

It probably is hormonal. I would kill to go back to sleeping the way I did when I was pregnant with DS1 (I could count on my fingers the number of times I woke up to pee with him, too. It was an awesome pregnancy.)

If I have been lying in bed, and at least an hour has gone by, and I have yet to fall asleep, I just get up. I either go in the living room and read or watch some TV. Usually watching a movie is a better chouce for me, as it has an "end", because with TV, I flip, and flip, and flip, and flip, and so on....

If I am in bed I have a habit of watching TV before I fall asleep, but sometimes I keep going up my eyelids start to droop, and that's when I cut the TV off. Usually a channel like HGTV and endless House Hunter, Property Virgins, or My First Place will do it....or Food Netwoek and Diner, Drive-Ins, and Dives. There's alsways one day a week these chennels play these shows after midnight on a continuous loop.

I either Dis from my phone or watch home shopping network. If we couldn't sleep as kids that was the only thing my mom would let us watch and it would normally bore us to sleep lol

Melatonin.
And if I am under abnormal stress, I have taken it during the day. (I have used it a few times during the day after having a pet put down.)
For me Melatonin just quiets the nerves.

My doctor recommended Melatonin for my son (10) because he has a hard time going to sleep too, but you are right, it does wear off fast. He will wake up and come get me.:headache: ( I know... big baby!!) This is part of the reason that I don't sleep well. I didn't know that you could mix Benadryl and Melatonin together, like someone said. I'll call the DR and see if I can try this for my son. :thumbsup2

I turn the fan on. Some "white noise" usually puts me to sleep quickly.

This is so true isn't it. I love sleeping with a fan on. I also run one in DS's room and I think it helps relax him too. I know that when my DD was a baby, I ran a vaporizer or a humidifier one for her when she was sick one time, and after that she wouldn't sleep without it for a while.

You do know that decaf coffee and capuccino still have caffeine, right?

No, I didn't know that. I thought decaf meant caffeine-free.:confused3

I'm tired but I can't fall asleep. Any tips?

I don't have any helpful suggestions at this point, but I hope you get to sleep soon cause once this baby comes your days of sleeping are over ;)

I'm on my third and of course she woke up at 3:45 this morning ready to start the day. My boys will be up in 40 minutes and DH is sleeping comfortably of course.

Actually I do have a suggestion. Usually if you turn on the tv to something that interests you it actually helps you fall asleep. You can just close your eyes to listen and then you drift off. I think that used to help me. Of course now that I average 4 hours of uninteruppted sleep at a time as soon as I lay down anywhere I"m out.

I listen to Books on Tape. An interesting book, but not too interesting. If fall asleep all the time with my headphones on.

I usually read and if that doesn't put me to sleep, I'll watch something boring on TV. Set the timer to go off in 30 minutes.

Don't worry, you're fine.

I tell my dd to play the alphabet game when she can't sleep. She starts at A and names a song, a movie or(this would be great for you!) a boy name and a girl name starting with each letter! She tells me she rarely gets past the letter L.

Tha alphabet game! My mom taught me to do that when was a child and couldn't fall asleep!

I'm still having sleeping problems, even though I'm very tired at night. So last night I when I went to bed I started "daydreaming". I imagined going to WDW with my husband and baby, seeing every detail in my mind, down to what my husband had in his pockets. What we would wear on the trip down, what we'd be doing before we left for the airport (I imagined a late flight so that I'd have a lot of details to imagine, like my husband getting in a few rounds of golf and me getting my hair done), and I imagined our baby was a daughter at age 5. The last thing I remember was choosing her outfit and then I fell asleep! It sounds corny, but it really put my mind at ease from missing my husband, and it was fun to do. We'll see how it works tonight. Maybe tonight I'll imagine our ADRs!
