Hubby needs to know...

What do you do if you don't care for your server or cabin steward?

Has anyone ever had that happen?

Talk to the head waiter for the server and guest services for your room steward

I should hope you wouldn't have that problem! The people aboard are some of the NICEST people I've ever met. From the very minute you sit down at dinner, they know your name right away, and by the 2nd or 3rd night they pretty much guess your drink order and get it right. Also, the maids on board are very friendly and very respectful of your privacy. One day I slept in really late, and the maid waited until I finished my nap and got out before she cleaned the room. They are very flexible. :)

Thanks for the info! With kids just 14 months apart (ages 3 and 4), we've developed our own routines for they way we do things when we go out to eat. The kids have decent restaurant manners, but that's partly because we can tell the wait staff what we want/need to keep everyone happy. Our biggest problems tend to be with staff who think they know best, or say, "Oh, but I ALWAYS do *whatever* for kids" even if it is exactly the opposite of what we ask.

Hubby is also a little concened about the staff's tendency to predict what people will order. Yes, my son would like to eat a hot dog every single night, but no, we do NOT want it served to him every single night.

Thanks for your insights. Hopefully, it won't be a problem if other people don't have concerns/issues with it!

You will find that most of the CMs are great with kids & they do wait for you to place your order each night. You may find that your favorite soda or tea is waiting for you at the table after the first couple nights though if you consistantly order it. They will have coloring menus & crayons at the table waiting for the kids and if you want them to eat first, that can be done with no problem at all. Our DS went to the club most nights & was done by 6:40 so I could take him to the club & return before the entre was served.

The wait staff tries to be helpful but they surely won't "push" anything on you our your kids. It is totally up to you what you order and they'll respect that, so tell your DH not to worry about it. ;)

They're also very in tune to whether everyone's enjoying their meals and they'll work hard to make it right if not. One time I ordered the fish our server had recommended. I'm not one to complain, but because I wasn't eating with my usual gusto :teeth: he knew I didn't really like it so whisked it away and brought me a different meal. No problem. They'll do the same for the kids if they sense the kids aren't enjoying their meals. And even though they get to know what you like to drink they've always asked us ahead of time if that's what we wanted, say, "Would you like your usual ginger ale tonight Miss Linda?", LOL.

I have read threads here before, though, from people who were less than pleased with their room stewards and servers. I seem to recall it in relation to the tipping issue so perhaps if you run a search on tipping it might yield more info for you on your question.

As to how things are done at home vs how they might be done on a vacation, whether a ship or land, my kids have always realized that there are exceptions made for vacation. Last month I had a solo WDW trip with only my 11yo and one highlight for him was the refillable mugs. I gave him free reign and he had a wonderful time. No, I do not normally allow soda for breakfast at home. :teeth: As a matter of fact I allow very little soda at home, but way lessened the rules for vacation. I know that it's important to keep some kind of routine with young children (I also have a 5yo, and 2 teenagers), but the vacation rules can be so fun, also.

I haven't cruised, though, and my kids will have a blast with not only refillabel mugs, but also pizza, fries, and ice cream. I may have to institute a few rules...LOL

Have fun! Your kids are at a great age for the cruise I bet.

If there are any problems in the restaurant, please tell the head server. He's the guy that comes around generally to your table at the beginning and the end of the cruise. It is his job to fix any problem you may have.

The servers will do ANYTHING (well almost ;) ) to please you. If your soup is cold tell them, they'll fix it. It your child doesn't like what was brought out, ask for something else.

As far as the room host, they somehow seem to know when you are gone!!! I'm sure they have info like your dinner time so they can not interrupt you trying to get ready and so that your beds will be turned down when you come back. You rarely see them and I believe this is on purpose.
