I've got it, bad. Do I need antibiotics, or will it go away on its own? Is it something I should call into work for? Or, can I be there?

Thanks!

Certain types are very contagious, so I wouldn't risk it. And yes, you might need medicine for it (again depending on what's causing it), so call your doctor.

i would definitely call the dr....i wouldnt go to work (were actually not allowed with pink eye--i work with kids though)
feel better!!!

Yes, pink eye is usually contagious and a Dr. and medicine is needed. I think with the right medicine it clears up quick.

Is there gunky discharge? You'll likely need antibiotic eye drops unless it's allergic. My 6yo went to the dr yesterday and has strep and pink eye. He's on oral antibiotic for the strep and topical for the pink eye.

Do not go to work, it can be highly contagious.

If you live in Henderson, NV there is a doctor in the Urgent Care who will prescribe Percoset (sp?) for the pain. At the time I had no idea what percoset was except that I slept for a day after I took one pill. When I was feeling well enough I looked it up and couldn't believe I had been given a narcotic pain killer. I only took the one pill as it made me feel sick and tired.

Mine did go away with some antibiotics. If you wear contacts make sure you are completely pink eye free before you put in a fresh pair.

I've had pink eye a couple of times and my aunt told me to start by washing it with warm saltwater. Maybe once or twice tonight and first thing in the morning. Then you should get to your dr. and get the medicine for it. I'm not sure what the saltwater does exactly but it seemed to go away faster when I did that, as opposed to the first time I had it and only used the medicine.

contagious, very contagious

Depends on the kind of pink eye. Allergic isn't. I don't think viral is, either. But the contagious types are very contagious. I remember getting it a lot when I was a kid.

Yeah, there's discharge. I woke up this morning with my eyes crusted over. I've been using a warm compress all day. The whites of my eyes are red and veiny and they are both very swollen and hurt. Even reading this site is difficult. My right eye is worse.

I've kept away from the kids today and have been using Purell nonstop.

I don't think it's allergies - I don't really have any and haven't been exposed to anything new. I do feel like I have the flu, so maybe it's viral.

I have had pink eye for almost a MONTH ! yep, a month ! I have been to the eye doctor and he told me it just has to run it's course, I have been using the medicine and it doesn't work for me (although my eye isn't crusty in the morning anymore) but my eye (only the left eye  ) is red and waters constantly alllllll day ! so good luck with yours! I hope it goes away quicker than mine, if you find something that works, let me know :teeth:

Did you stay out of work at all? I just don't want to sound like a wimp to my boss by calling in for this. But, at least I don't have meetings tomorrow - I do all day on Tuesday.

I didn't go to work the first day, but that was because I needed to get medicine and I had a hard time seeing, but after that, I went, you just have to make sure you are not touching your eye and then touch someone or something else, it is supposed to be VERY contagious, even if you touch a door knob after touching your eye, the next person who touches that door knob would supposedly get it ! one thing which is odd with mine, nobody else in my family got it and I've had it sooooo long :confused3

I would call in to work. At day cares and at schools, if a child has pink eye, they need to be on the topical antibiotic for 24 hours before they are allowed back in school.

Me and DH just had pinkeye last week. This is what we learned. Viral and Bacterial are both contagious. You are no longer contagious once the tearing stops. Viral just needs to run its course, but you can get eye drops to help. Bacterial you need meds. Both of ours lasted a week (we had viral).

Viral is usually associated with an upper respitory infection and the discharge is white in color. Bacterial can happen all on its own and has a yellow or green discharge.

This is just what we learned, I would still go to the doctor to be sure. I hope you feel better. :)

Ok, the reason pink eye is so contagious is that little kids usually get it, rub their eyes, play with toys, kiss their little buddy at school, etc. and it spreads. A responsible adult that knows not to rub her eye and then shake hands with someone without washing her hands first isn't going to spread pink eye, it isn't airborne. You can go to work but call the dr in the morning for eye drops.

Having had pink eye in both eyes, if my co-worker came to work with it, I'd go home.

Throw out all makeup, throw out contact if you wear them and wear glasses until the pink eye is completely gone.

Wash your hands frequently and yes, go to the doctor.

Pinkeye will go asway on it's own but it could take weeks.
The most important thing is to wash your hands constantly. Every time you touch your eyes you should either wash well or use Purell.
You could go to work but you can pass it on just by touching a pencil and then giving that pencil to a co-worker and then he rubs his eyes. Or touching a doorknob and then a co-worker touches the knob and rubs his eyes. It is that contagious and lives outside the body for up to an hour. Most doctors recommend 24 hours on antibiotic drops.
You should also change your bed linens because you rub your eyes into the gunk that has drained out while sleeping. You should change your pillowcase every night for at least 3 nights, and all your towels that you use for your face need to be changed each day.
Salt water drops will help clean out the drainage but the best thing to do when you wake in the am and your eyes are stuck together you should put a wet warm washcloth on your eyes for about 10 minutes to soften the gunk and then wipe toward the outside of your eye. Change the area of the washcloth and wipe again. Never wipe the other eye with that facecloth.
this is what we tell out college students who get pinkeye alot.
I would recommend a visit to the Dr or walk in clinic. Peggie

Good old conjunctivitis- I have had this tooo many times and so have my kiddos in the past!!!

Heres a little info--

Pinkeye (also called conjunctivitis) is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen.
Pinkeye is very common. It usually is not serious and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment.

Common symptoms of pinkeye are:

Eye redness (hyperemia).
Swollen, red eyelids.
More tearing than usual.
Feeling as if something is in the eye (foreign-body sensation or keratoconjunctivitis).
An itching or burning feeling.
Mild sensitivity to light (photophobia).
Drainage from the eye.
Most cases of pinkeye are caused by:

People with infectious pinkeye should not attend school or go to work until symptoms improve.

If the pinkeye is caused by a virus, the person can usually return to day care, school, or work when symptoms begin to improve, typically in 3 to 5 days. Medications are not usually used to treat viral pinkeye, so it is important to prevent the spread of the infection.

Treatment and prevention of PINK EYE / CONJUNCTIVITIS
- Treatment depends on what is causing the pink eye / conjunctivitis and must be determined by a doctor.
- Infectious conjunctivitis spreads very easily! To prevent spreading the infection to the good eye or to others, the infected eye should not be touched with the hands.
- It is important to wash hands thoroughly and frequently to prevent spreading.
- Make-up and handkerchiefs should not be shared with an infected person.
- Contact lenses and eye make-up should not be worn until the problem has been resolved.
- Used make-up must be thrown away if the patient has been diagnosed with infectious conjunctivitis.
- Clothes, towels, pillow cases and anything else which may have come in contact with an infected person should be washed.
- A warm compress may be helpful to relieve discomfort and removing "crust".
- Antibiotic or antiviral medication may be prescribed by the doctor for certain types of infectious conjunctivitis.
- If eye drops or an ointment is prescribed, the applicator tip and infected eye must never come in contact with one another. Antibiotics for the eye are available only by prescription.
- Allergens and other irritants such as smoke, which may cause allergic and mechanical conjunctivitis, should be avoided.
- If an irritant or foreign object is causing the pink eye / conjunctivitis, flushing of the eye with an eye-wash solution may be recommended. (Specific products may be recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
- Certain over-the-counter eye drops or oral antihistamine medications may help reduce symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis or conjunctivitis caused by certain irritants. These are not effective for infectious conjunctivitis and should only be used to reduce symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis. (Specific products may be recommended by a physician or pharmacist.)
