What do you do at Nassau?

This past July was my first trip to Nassau and we did an Atlantis tour of the aquariums and that was it. I was not impressed, we were shuttled on a bus and sent through town and all I could keep thinking was "why are we being paraded through the slums instead of being sent straight to Atlantis?" Every other building was either boarded up, burnt down, or had barbed wire around it's perimeter.

If that was "the best of nassau" then I don't need to ever go back there, I'm staying on the boat and counting that as a Sea Day!

On my last visit, I took a quick walk over to The Queen's Staircase. It was a nice historical place with a story. At the top of the staircase is a fort that cost like a dollar or two to tour. At the fort, you can see most of the island and all the ships.

I may be a little late to the conversation but I've been on two Disney Cruises where we stopped at Naussa and both times we stayed on the ship :'D. From what I've heard there's just mostly shopping to do there and then of course Atlantis, but that can be very expensive! We like to stay on the ship and go on the aqua duck and play on the sports deck because there is hardly anybody using it then!

We are going this November, I'm trying to decide between Blue Lagoon or a day pass at Hilton British Colonial. We had originally planned to do a day at Atlantis but I know how my children work and I see them annoyed with the crowds (they are 12 and 15).

So you never left the ship in Nassau (not NASA, that's something completely different) to see for yourself?

On my next cruise (Carnival) we make a stop at Nassau and we'll be trying Blue Lagoon. Then, next spring we'll try Atlantis (just the Beach pass though because there is 5 cruiseships in Nassau that day).

On my first cruise we had booked the British Colonial but cancelled it at the last minute. They have good reviews though.

Nassau (not NASA, that's something completely different)

I'm sure that poster's computer auto-correct changed what she was trying to type into NASA. Seems highly unlikely that she doesn't know the difference, given that she has cruised there.

Last Nov we were there and took the Graycliff chocolate tour and made our own chocolate. Lots of fun and I would highly recommend it.

Last cruise DH & I did a self-guided walking tour of Nassau from the Unofficial Disney Cruise guidebook. We enjoyed the quick walk to the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle. From there we wandered the route and made our way to the John Watling's Distillery and did a quick tour and picked up a bottle of rum. From there we followed the route back to port. I enjoyed seeing the Canadian connections to the Island, from the banks, in the distillery and even at a graveyard that we passed by. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful, didn't enjoy the hawkers right at the port, but they're just trying to make a living and they weren't overly aggressive.

On our next few cruises, I am looking at some excursions that were mentioned here and on TripAdvisor. A food tasting and/or cooking tour, a guided walking tour and an island tour. I even remember one Dis thread where a poster mentioned that he enjoys getting off the ship and heading to the McDonald's (really close to port) for a spicy fish sandwich and see the locals there. I plan to get off at each and every port and see other places - it's what DH and I enjoy doing.
