What do you do at Nassau?

I'm looking for something inexpensive and low key. My kids want to get off the ship and see it (otherwise I would probably stay on the ship). I think they want to see it just to see it...which is fine. I don't want to go to Atlantis or book an excursion. Maybe just a place to have a bite to eat or a public beach to see a few sites. Any recommendations? Anywhere we can just walk to? Thanks!

Jakanoo Beach is about a 15 minute walk from the pier. It takes you past the straw market, and many of the water front proerties, and restaurants. Easy to get to, easy to get back. it also provides a nice view of the ship depending on how many others are in port with you. Other people enjoy the Greyclif chocolate tours.

Junkanoo Beach is a short walk away. It's kind of fun to see a "downtown" beach. It's not Castaway Cay, but it has a funky vibe to it. There are plenty of places to get a bite to eat or a drink. I recommend Marshalls World Famous Bahama Mama drink stand which is right on the beach.

A different direction will take you to the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle. Both are quick, cheap and fun to visit.

Is there a charge at Junkanoo Beach? Can you swim there? Thanks for the recommendations!

No charge, and yes you can swim there. The water was warm and clear when we were there on New Years Day this year.

I am curious about what to do at Nassau too. My plan now is basically to get off and walk around for a few minutes just to say that I did, then spend most of the day on the ship. But if there is something that's worth doing then maybe I'll spend longer there.

My husband and daughter loved the Pirate Museum and said the statues were so lifelike they thought some were going to move. We've also gone over to Atlantis for the day and toured the property and acquarium, which we really liked. The first time we stopped we did the island tour and straw market.

That's exactly our plan (4 day cruise). Departure day and our sea day we know alot of things will be quite busy so we plan on doing alot of what the ship has to offer on our Nassau Day.

Get off for a few hours, go swim at the beach, let dad stop at the local brewery for a couple brews then get back on and ride the aqua duck, etc....we also plan on skipping the MDR this evening. Hope to be the first ones off the ship and some of the first ones back on.

The brewpub near the port is really good! And the people that run it are super nice folks.

Yeah, it's a must do for us...the wife and I are planning on each bringing a 6 pack on from there when we reboard.

Another vote for Junkanoo Beach. Strong cold drinks there. And definitely many shops near the pier as well as eateries. We also like to go to Hard Rock for a T-shirt as well as free WiFi...

So when you get off the boat and exit the port building, what are the walking directions? We usually avoid Nassau but this sounds like a fun option!

lots to do in nassau including Junkanoo beach, pirate museum, shop... not sure why people are down on Nasasu, we love it.

I suggest you check out a map, but it's to the right and past the Pirate Republic Brewery, Straw Market, and British Colonial Hotel. 10 - 15 minute walk at most. The beach isn't fancy, but it has a fun vibe and it's a different experience than you get from many other beaches. Lots of food and drink vendors and a good view of the ships.

I'm with the PP, I like Nassau. We were there on New Years Day when the Junkanoo Parade was going on and it was fabulous! I've never seen anything like it! I have always found the people of Nassau to be friendly. I can't wait to go back.

After doing Atlantis too many times, we did the straw market once and now we just stay on the ship. This upcoming cruise we are thinking of popping out to pick up beer and hit up the market again quickly and then back on the ship :) I do find that more and more people stay onboard now!

Has to be a reason (or two or three). There are multiple posts about why Disney should give-up on this port and find another stop. I wouldn't single-out Nassau, I've done East and West cruises and the ports there are, well, that's another story.

If I had to do the Bahamas over, I'd follow the crew when they get off. I was told by three crew where to go near Nassau :)

DH and I did not like what we saw of Nassau (we walked a few minutes outside the "Welcome Center"). It was really dirty, stinky and run down + lots of pushy vendors. We did not venture very far.

I read a lot of reviews saying there is a lot of broken glass and cigarettes on Junkanoo Beach (on the SeaCruisers video on youtube they said the same thing). I haven't seen it for myself though.

I would definitely pick an excursion or just stay on the cruiseship.
