I live in So Calif & call them sprinkles. I never heard of them being called jimmies.

I think. I don't usually like either, but if I had to get one or the other it would be Jimmies.

No wonder people have gotten weird looks after calling them "jimmies" when other people call them "sprinkles". Jimmies can be anything from a racial slur stemming from Jim Crow laws to slang for condoms or male private parts.

I can't remember ever hearing them called jimmies, but I'm from the south. Jimmies looks to be a northern term.

All of my life I have known these as 'hundreds and thousands'

This is the name used to buy them in tubs or get them added to an ice cream cone.

Over the last few years I have seen them being called sprinkles.........hmm...progress maybe.

Edit, I dont want to derail the thread. But when you buy fried fish and chips and you want some of the loose batter that comes out of the frying pan, what do you call this product?

Yorkshire= Scraps
North East= Bits
West Scotland=batter

It definitely is a regional term. I remember when i was in college (many years ago.....) I was in California on the beach and went up to an ice cream stand. I ordered my cone and asked for "jimmies" on it. The girl behind the counter looked at me like I was crazy....and I, in turn, am looking at her like she is crazy because they are right on the counter in front of her and I keep pointing at them saying "jimmies".

My grandmother called them jimmies. My mother still calls them jimmies. They're definitely jimmies.

If you want to call them sprinkles, we understand....some people just have no imagination!

Here in SE Mass, "Jimmies" and I agree with a PP who said that there are good ones and bad ones (cheap) and my family can tell the difference.

As for other "jimmie" meanings, never heard of anything else except the plural of a man's name -- found the southern explanation

I call them jimmies, but only b/c that's what my Papa who lived in NH called them. Around here (OK), everyone calls them sprinkles.

I'm from NJ too so it is jimmies for me. Around here, in TN, they are sprinkles. So, I call them sprinkles because otherwise people would look at me like I had 2 heads!

From NJ but they have never been anything but sprinkles around here.
