We booked directly through DCL and have a GTY Cat 4 for 5 that's still in the distant future. With all of the great upgrade stories, does this GTY mean we could get a cat 3? :goodvibes

Does anyone ever not get a room once they have a GTY? :earseek:
Is there anything we can do to increase our chances of an upgrade? :scratchin

TIA :listen:

I am not an expert on upgrades, but if you are up at this time of night, I'll put in my two cents. From what I've seen , the only upgrades have been from higher cat ie. 9-12. I don't remember seeing a jump from a 4 up. Boy, that would be something. I'll hope that it happens for you. I also would like an upgrade on the east to west repositioning cruise in May. VERY unlikely per DCL. I have been trying to get a cat 3 on the May cruise but it is tight and currently not open for discussion with DCL.

Of course not everyone gets an upgrade...but not to long ago I saw a post where someone was upgraded to a cat 3. I'm sure it dosen't happen very offten...but it has happened. From the sound of it it's more common to be upgraded from the lower cat like 10-12...up to cat 6-9...but higer upgrades are not unheard of.

As for the gty...and anyone not getting a room??? GTY means you ARE guaranteed at least the cat stateroom that you paid for...so You will for sure get at least a cat 4 stateroom. If that's what you were asking.

I understand DCL like airlines plan for a number of cancellations at full payment time, and no shows, on their past statistics they overbook by the expected cancellations to ensure they have a full ship. The GTY means they will allocate you a room of that level or above near full payment time or on embarkation. The higher the GTY grade you book the less chance of a upgrade, as there are fewer rooms, and fewer grades above you.

Now you do not hear of people not getting rooms, on a GTY, but it must be possible that everyone does show and pay up fully and the ship is overbooked. Then Airlines, pay people to be bumped off. I do not know if this has ever occured on DCL,

I booked three Category 4 rooms in a GTY status and we received exactly that. I really did not expect an upgrade, but was surprised that I was able to get three 4's on a GTY.

Good luck!

If you booked a Cat 4 GTY, then expect a Cat 4 stateroom. Free upgrades are few and far between to begin with -- although anything is possbible.

As other have noted, DCL can overbook cheaper categories, and then accomodate everyone by upgrading some passengers for the convenience of DCL.

From what I can tell, DCL usually has a waiting list for category 3 and above. There likely will be someone sailing who has already informed DCL they will pay for that upgrade - guess who DCL will stick in that room?
