What do we call the old folks?

I don't know my mom is 70 and she drives me crazy!!! My dad passed away 2 1/2 years ago. She doesn't drive and she's bored her social life is somewhat limited. She plays in scat tournaments and has a couple of friends who once a month or so take her to the casino and they go out to eat. I take her shopping and try to see her as much as I can. I made the mistake of asking her why she didn't go to the senior citizens center for bingo (she likes bingo). Oh my she told me she went once with her friend that runs the games and she said it was all elderly people there!

Life Experienced Citizens ;)

And I did get yelled at by a PARENT for referring to our middle schoolers as "children". Apparently I am supposed to call them "students" and not children.

I don't pay any attention to this "politically correct" crap. I just say it as I see it. I try to be polite at all times but if I say something that might upset someone , oh well. There is always going to be someone who doesn't like what you say or what you do. IMO they need to get over it and move on.

All the while my MIL was alive I always referred to her as the "old woman". I didn't mean much harm in it. It is better than what I would of like to call her. :rotfl2:

Apparently, "elderly" and "senior citizen" are offensive to the older population. I'm getting so sick of this PC stuff, why does it have to take on a negative meaning? Next thing you know, they'll be saying it's wrong to call kids "children" for some silly reason.

I've been sick of it for a long time. As for your question, you could call them:

1. The Shuffleboard Squad
2. Jumpin' Geriatrics
or
3. Retirement Specialists

As a group, I call them my elders. If some don't like it, I don't care. You can't make everyone happy, and you shouldn't even try...

Sounds like something I believe I heard on John Stewarts show when he was talking about homeless people (not comparing them) but before they were called bums, then that got offensive so now they are called homeless and that is getting offensive so next they will be called "outdoorsmen". :rotfl:

THAT is funny!

I wonder what they will be called after 'outdoorsmen' becomes offensive"?

I mean, 'outdoorsmen' is limited to 'men', and being 'outdoors' sorta implies a lumbarjack/hunter type of person who kills his own food (protected species, etc) and then chops down our nation's forest to build his own shack.

How about "natural, organic freedom lovers"? Has a nice ring to it.

"People who tell stories"

Back in "diggety odd six", we would have killed for high-falutin' programmable microwave oven/MP3 player machines.........and were glad of it.

I just say someone is "older" or there is a group of "older people" -- that way I'm not calling anybody old, I'm just saying that they're older and people can put whatever interpretation on that they want. (i.e. older than me, older than you, older than the hills -- whatever.)

I have an aunt who passed away recently at the age of 97. She was insulted, beyond insulted, if you ever tried to insinuate that she was old. I sent her some flowers and told the florist that she was elderly so give her some extra time to get to the door. For some assinine reason, they wrote this on her card and she was P.O.'ed. She's like, "Elderly??? Who's elderly???"

You know, she always looked about 20 years younger than she actually was and dressed like a fashion plate until the day she died, so I don't think she ever considered herself old. I think old is a state of mind.

That's funny about your aunt! My grandmother lived to be 90 and used to drive her "elderly" neighbors to the store. She thought it was such a shame that they had gotten too old to drive. Her sister (my great-aunt) lived to be 96 and lived at home until she died. The last few years of her life, she had a sitter come to help her with bathing, light housework, and things like that. She wasn't a professional, just someone who "sat with the elderly." She (the sitter) was 84! LOL!!

I guess you're as old as you feel!

I've always liked the term "Q Tips".....

Hey, call me whatever you want if I live to be 97. I probably won't be able to hear you anyway! :lmao:

As a matter of fact I was over at my parents house the other day to meet with them and an insurance agent about continuing some life insurance policies on my mother.

My mother is 81; my father 84.

Anyway, the blasted insurance salesman kept referring to my mother as being '81 years young' and talking about how someday she will be '90 years young'. My mother sat and stewed. She thinks referring to her like that is condescending. She is simply 81 years old, period.

If the salesman hadn't been an invited guest to her house, I bet she would have said something to him. However, since he was, she didn't. She simply waited until he left to take it out on my father and me (mostly my father, since he can no longer run as fast as me).

I call alll older people " Grandma and grandpa." thats what our students do when we go to the Grandma and Grandpa home. (nursing home).

That's young-centric!

Hmm. I have never thought of that.

I am a bit broke. So, if I go up to the local nursing or retirement home and begin calling everyone I see 'grandma' or 'grandpa', I will, sooner or later, be mistaken for a grandson by someone, who will then slip me some money?

Yes, yes. It could well work.

Thanks! ;)

Let us see, if a gathering of whales is called a pod; a gathering of crows is called a murder (true!); a gathering of geese would be called a gander…

What do you call a gathering of elderly people?

The first great answer gets an authentic Dancing Pickle!
