What do I use a "potato ricer" for?

I guess it makes minced potatoes, but why would I need that?

Someone gave me one as a birthday present since they know I like kitchen gadgets, but I have no idea what I would use it for.

Any ideas on what to make with it?

A potato ricer is used to make "mashed" potatoes. You put the cooked, hot potatoes in it and squish them through, add milk and butter and mix them up. It will make a smooth but not mushy kind of mashed potato. I have seen it done on food programs and is seems quick but I started just using an old fashioned potato masher and we like the results. Hope this helps.

We use it to make "rice" potatoes. Just put them in the bowl, then let people add butter, salt, pepper, gravy, etc as they wish. We love them! Softer than boiled potatoes and great for those who don't like mashed.

Gnocchi. That's what all my Italian relatives use it for. It's a delicious, but heavy potato pasta. If you're into cooking, it could be fun. I'm sure you can find recipes online.

You can also use your potato ricer to make Spaetzle, a German noodle side dish.

I use mine to make mashed potatoes. So much better than using a hand mixer and absolutely no lumps.

I like my tater's "rustic". ;) :thumbsup2

DM bought me one last Christmas and I have yet to open it. DM is a great cook and swears by it. I like my old fashioned hand potato masher. At least I get some use out of the salad spinner and digital meat thermometer she gave me.

Happy cooking!

I grew up using a ricer - as others have said, makes great mashed potatoes.

We also used it for winter squash, mostly butternut. Running it through the ricer after baking breaks up the fibers so it's not at all stringy. After ricing the squash, stir in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, whatever you like.

yep, that's what my family uses it for. My mom would take it out only for that purpose.
