I kind of think something is wrong with my keyboard. I used to be able to make all those symbols, like "alt 4" would make a heart, "alt 5" would make a club, etc. For some reason that stopped working a long time ago.

Now...when you say to put num lock on, then hold alt and type 0176...do I need to type in on the square block of numbers on the right...where the num lock key is? Or should I do the numbers that are in a straight line above the letters?
