What do i need to do

Me and my wife are going to disney world for the first time in oct.
We are going to book a 5 day wdw hopper one day sea world and one day at bush garden.
We dont want to spend the whole two weeks just doing the parks,where else is there nice to go and visit we have a car so we dont mind driving,is there any good places we can go out on day visit,and where would be the best places to go out on night times.....Manys thanks Ian

Ian,

The first visit to WDW is great, you seem to have the right idea, ie dont try to do everything in one trip, if you enjoy yourself like a lot of people here you'll end up going back many many times.

On places to go, I know its another Park but if you dont have young children with you I'd strongly recommend Universal Studios for the day (or island of Adventure if you like coasters), definitely better parks for thrill seekers.

On things to do in the evening if you are not staying on site make sure you eat in some of the Disney hotels, the restaurants are great and varied and it gives you a chance to look round the different properties which are fantastic. I'd definitely recommend visting the Wilderness Lodge or the Animal Kingdom lodge which are stunning. The Boardwalk is also fun in the evnings for some food and a wander around looking at the "street" entertainment,

We make out first trip in May and will have 15 full days there. We'll have children with us but are planning on pacing ourselves regarding visiting the theme parks - I'm sure we'll be back to do what we missed! - with days off between times to relax, see other things and SHOP!!

We'll be spending a day at the Kennedy Space Center - growing up in the 60's I just have to go there. They do a 'have lunch with an astronaut' thing too - maybe a bit pricey considering the menu, but certainly something different.

We also want to visit one of the coasts for the day to see the beach and something a bit different from what I imagine is the hubbub of Orlando.

There's a horse riding stables out at Poinciana that takes you on trails through a nature reserve, might see if any of our kids/party are interested in that.

Will have some more ideas once we've been!

What about a drive to the Disney Community of "Celebration"

Ian - do you have Simon V's book "A Brits Guide ot Orlando" it's absolutely a must for a first timer to Orlando and help with other ideas outside the parks - also there is a forum on the DIS Discussion Forums called the other side of Orlando that's also good for great ideas away from the parks.

Did you book your theme park tickets yet as I think it was Keith Prowse that was giving away a free copy when you ordered your theme park tickets with them.

I haven't done a comparison on prices of tickets versus the £11.99 you'd save on the book.

You will be spending the weekend with your nose in a book though!

We did an airboat ride on our last visit, and would recommend this as an alternative to visiting the theme parks. Great fun zipping around on an airboat, with an interesting commentary from the driver plus the chance to see some wildlife up close. We visited Boggy Creek Airboats, more details here .

I can also recommend the Kennedy Space Center. You don't have to be a big fan of space exploration to enjoy a day there, just the scale of activity is impressive enough.

Finally, if you don't visit Islands of Adventure you will miss one of the best theme parks anywhere.

Going in October you should be able to go to one of the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal - definitely the best theme park experience you will have.
