What do I do about a dying Betta?

People, People... can we have a moment of silence here for poor dear departed Mr Feeney and the One Eyed Mom??

Hey, that would be a good name for a rock band!

I learned a long time ago that I shouldn't try to keep fish. When my DHs were young, I came home one afternoon and the babysitter had "kindly" given the boys her goldfish. It was like, seven years old! I went out and bought a fancy aquarium set-up, since I could never keep the goldfish bowl clean enough. It didn't take long before he died. We had to suffer through the whole, swimming on one side thing too. To make up for losing "George", I went out and bought two other fish. Yep, killed them off too. That was the end of our fish owning days. Now, we're down to one chinchilla, who seems to be fine. I did learn that goldfish are considered very "dirty" fish, and that you need to change their water frequently, but the water you put in the bowl, must be room temperature, and have sat for a day or so before you put the fish in. Is this still true or are there better methods available?

Those poor poor little guys it just isnt funny................ yes it is!!! :lmao:

*Note to self...don't drink coffee and surf the DIS unless you have a towel ready to clean off the monitor...I think I just blew coffee out my nose...ewwww*

I am so sorry about your fish, you get really attached to them. I still cry everytime on of ours dies. I bury mine, I don't think flushig them is right.

OT, but...

I keep reading this as "What do I do about a dying Betty?", and all I can think is: Maybe she doesn't want to go on the cart.

Sorry. Carry on.

Oh... I have a friend who killed two birds.

She got them for her DH and one day she put the cage on the window sill so they could look outside... The window was open. She forgets and goes to work... it goes to below freezing and there was no heat on in the apt... DH comes home to "frozen love birds" (this could be why this marriage didn't last, but it was probably becase DH started messing around with other men!)

One-Eyed Mom is still kickin'. Now, we're down to the argument over who's going to stick him in the freezer. Every single time I mention it, my youngest daughter makes me feel horrible.

DH says he's going to do it when I'm not noticing, that way he won't have to listen to me. I didn't protest too much, but he still hasn't done it yet.

But... he's still alive. I can't bury him alive.

Heck, I can't flush him and I can't seem to freeze him either!

How is Mom today? Is your DD home yet?

We were gone all day yesterday, so I never saw DD20 - Mom's original owner. He is still alive though. Right now, he's got his head up to the water. At least he's getting air. That's good, right???

Awwwww, I just read this thread and I really feel bad for the fish. :sad2:

I love animals and can't stand to think of any creature suffering. I must be the biggest wimp ever because I could cry thinking of your little fish.

I'm the same way!

Several people on here have said that he's probably in pain, but I can't stand the thought of deliberately killing anything. I've had a dog euthanized before, but that was on the vet's advice, and of course, the vet did it.

I have to decide when it's Mom's time and I don't wanna do it. :sad2:

Lordy, I sure do wish Mom would pass over, this thread is so sad!

I actually had a relative tell me to put him down the garbage disposal, yesterday! Who are these people and how did I end up related to them??? :sad2:

How awful. :sad2:

The clove oil method looks like the best way to do it.

I wish you strength to do what you must to end the fishes suffering.

Are you absolutely sure that the fish is ready to go? We have had bettas that sometimes seem like they are going to die and then they just revive themselves and carry on like nothing was ever wrong with them :confused3

OMG, were they serious? You must have been adopted--no way you are related by blood to that person! ;)

That's my biggest fear, but I honestly don't think he's eaten in quite awhile. When I feed him, I always watch to see if he grabs any, and I can't remember the last time he did.

I think he's ready. If I didn't think he was hurting, I'd let him die naturally.
