What do/did braces cost you?

Has anyone had an estimate done for Invisalign for teeth that only need minor correction? I had braces as a child but of course my teeth have shifted some as an adult :headache: I have a small gap (really not that noticeable) but it drives me nuts, so I want to get it fixed.

Wondering if cost for Invisalign might be less to correct such a small problem? Or maybe an orthodontist could just do a retainer to fix? Anyone gotten estimates for orthodontic work that wasn't metal braces?

My 17 yo son's teeth were pretty bad and had them on for 2 1/2 years...the cost was $4700.00....they were for the clear ones....the cost also includes all the retainers.

My oldest daughter had regular braces on for 18 months and now a permanent bottom retainer and a removeable top retainer (to sleep in) and they cost $3500.00. My son has/needs more extensive braces and his is $9300.00 and he just had this put on in May and it will be a 3-4 year process and hopefully no jaw surgery. My dentist would not start braces early as he finds it works better during puberty as teeth move easier and stated if they were done too early we would end up doing them again in the teen years so we waited and i must say my daughter has a million dollar smile now........

Hoping for good results for my son as well............we will finish with his and it will be time for the youngest..............

We are about a month and a half into braces. Due to a problem with dd teeth, she has invisalign. However, we checked prices at several orthos for both traditional and invisalign. The metal ranged from $4000-$5000.

DD's were about $5000 split over 2 phases. That doesn't include getting baby teeth pulled by the regular dentist. No insurance either--at least the FLEX plan helped some.

It was about $5,000, full mouth, with retainers. They were put on my son in 2009.

DS is 13. Teeth are perfectly straight but large overbite and molars are not meeting properly. Tomorrow is his appt to have pano xray, cephxray, models and photos. That is $400. The treatment fee is an additional $5760 for 24-28 months. Insurance should pay $1000 of it. There is a hand written note with astrick for "extra $ required for extractions and other records as required." The payments are $170 --zero interest-- over 28 months. Probably b/c of the shock on my face when they gave me the estimate, I did not hear an option to pay up front with a discount so will ask for that tomorrow! Thanks DISfriends :thumbsup2

DS 11 is finishing Phase 1 with palate expander, braces and head gear- now onto retainer. Cost $3800. Now the term Phase 1 begs the obvious that there is likely a Phase2 =0

Who knows what that will run

DD21 got them 9 years ago. We got a great deal--$2700, payable $100/month, no interest. Retainer and all periodic checks included. About 3 months after the braces came off he saw things were starting to shift, so he put them back on for another 12 months, and he didn't charge for any of that, either. It was an incredible deal, and he was an incredible ortho.

We just had a consultation for dd13 today, cost is $4800 for damon braces ( no rubber bands and they come off in 18 mos. instead of 24) plus another $300 for clear upper braces. We get 5% off for paying in cash.

We also went to another ortho and his cost for regular braces was $4660 plus 10% off for cash up front. We are going with the more expensive one b/c that ortho spent a lot of time with us, was really nice and did not want to pull 4 of her teeth ( 2 babies that do not have permanent ones and 2 permanent ones fo make them even on top and bottom).

We had our consultation June 14th for ds12. His will be $5,100, and that includes retainers, etc. He is getting "standard treatment", so it's not considered a more difficult case. Our insurance pays about 20%, and we'll do a payment plan of $129 a month for 36 months. The other upfront costs make up the difference -- xrays, extractions, etc.

We're very pleased and know we will get good quality work. Our ortho was recommended by our dentist, and then we found out he's the grandfather of one of ds's classmates!

My DS 14 just had them put on, and it cost us $6200! :scared1: I just about fainted! Like everyone that includes the office visits and retainer. Personally, I think he should take me out to dinner for that kind of money! :rotfl:

My daughter needs more room in her mouth so she had an expander put in which cost us $2800. Braces will be next and those are ESTIMATED to run about $6500. I wasn't expecting quite so much, thankfully they are very flexible with payments!

We haven't hit the braces stage yet but add me to the group who doesn't get multiple phase braces. I visited with our dentist (who did my braces 20+ years ago when he was a baby dentist) about this who said it was only rare cases who benefited from early intervention and that even if you did do them early, you would pretty much need them again in the teens.

So for those of you who did the multiple phases....why did you? what was the reason/benefit? did you have to do another phase in the teens? Was there a price break? For example, one set averages $5000 do you split that for two phases? Or do you pay $5000 twice?

I have heard them called vanity braces when they get put on really young -- keeps kids from walking around with horribly crooked teeth when the adult teeth come in. Do you think that is true? Thanks for satisfying my curious mind!!!

DS is 12 and just got the go ahead as well. He gets them put on early next month. Total cost is $4700. Our insurance is covering $1500 of that. So we will be paying $3300.

We were also told that our 8 year old may require a retainer to help with her narrow arch. If it's not better by next year she will get that and then at about 12 years she will get braces as well.

Our DD just got her braces-Phase 1, Full Set at a cost of $6400.00.
Ins. paid $1000.00 and we paid $1000.00 as a down payment. Monthly payments will be $168.00 for 24 months. This will cover all visits, equipment, etc. We will have to pay for another retainer if the first is lost or breaks.

the reason we are doing phase 1 (which isn't just braces - it's a "turtle", retainer and braces) is that my DD's mouth is too narrow to allow her adult teeth to come in correctly - we are spreading her jaw first with the "turtle" to allow the adult teeth to come in. Her teeth do not line up for proper chewing of food. My opinion is there's nothing vain about it - it's correcting a problem. I received a $200 discount for paying upfront for phase 1 - phase 2 will be a whole new bill.

Thank you so much for answering!!! Ouch for having the pay for 2 sets of braces!!!! :goodvibes

Did she notice the problem chewing food or did the dentist point it out? Was that the only reason why the dentist recommended the turtle/braces early? Would there have been damage to her adult teeth by not chewing properly had you waited until she was older and only put on one set of braces/expander? I am really trying to wrap my head around the 2 phase braces - and having to pay for 2 sets for each kid if necessary. :)

My mouth was also too narrow for my adult teeth and I had some really WONKY looking teeth until my plate expander and braces were put on around 12-13 years old. Back then there was never any mention of multiple phase braces -- you just waited until all of your adult teeth were in and you were (roughly) the size of an adult.

Thanks again for helping me understand!!!

We knew there was a problem as her front teeth have never fully come in and there is a huge open space - she can't bite down to break off food. She more or less gnaws food on the side. We are waiting to see what phase 1 accomplishes before considering phase 2 - if phase 1 solves the problem we probably won't move on to phase 2. Won't know that for at least another year or more. I also was surprised they put braces on kids at such a young age but it was explained that this works better than waiting until the teen years. Every mouth is different so I wouldn't worry about it until you know what is needed and I would consider getting a second opinion and prices before saying "yes" or "no" to any treatments.

My son is 12 and we have finally gotton the go ahead for braces. He is getting traditional metal braces and the cost is $4950. I was wondering how "average' is that price?

$1100 for the spacers she wore prior to getting the braces
$6300 for the braces (which are probably coming off in about 3 months).
My DD is 13 and we are in CT
