What do cook on cold day?

Sure, I just use a cream base, which consists of...........

1/2 cup butter
6 tbps flour
2 cups milk
2 cubes chicken bouillon (which you really don't even need)
pepper
Additional milk if needed for less thick consistency after everything else is added

Melt butter & then add flour to make a paste
Add milk & bouillon & cook over low heat until thick

I then added:

--Hunks of chicken which can be taken from a leftover chicken or chicken breast cut up in to bit size pieces. I used uncooked chicken breast, but cooked it in microwave first.

--Bite size potatoes that I had peeled & precooked

--Bite size carrots precooked w/ potatoes in same pot

--A can of corn (juice drained & then added to soup if it gets too thick)

--Onion powder & any other spices you might like

You can actually add anything you want to this soup -I'm not an onion, celery, green or red pepper fan but those can be added, along with brocolli, etc.

I've used this base to make seafood chowder, clam chowder, potato cheese soup - just about any cream soup can be made with this base & it's so easy.

I doubled the recipe for 5 of us & we have some left over for a few bowls during the week.

Thanks so much...sounds perfect, can't wait to try it soon. My daughters are coming home from college for Winter Break and can't wait for homemade food so I think this will be a huge hit!!!

I make a great chicken taco soup which the whole house loves. It is delicious and warms you up all nice and toasty.

Guess I'm the weird girl out. I'm used to it;)

Having homemade pinto beans and corn bread with sort of fried potatoes

I *knew* I forgot something at the store to go with the beans I'm making! Ours will be lima beans instead of the pinto beans. Like 'em both. :thumbsup2 Also having black bean soup and taco soup later in the week. We Floridians take advantage of soup weather when it comes. ;)

Another Chili person here tonight. We had that for dinner and I'm having left overs with corn bread for lunch tomorrow.

Another of our favorite winter foods is our version of pigs in a blanket. It comes from DP's German Grandmother. It's meat and rice (back in the day it was pork sausage and ground beef) Now we used ground turkey and rice, wrapped in cabbage leaves with saeurkraut.

Also a big pot of home made soup. mmm...

Guy barking in here to stir up the pot....

A cold day? Definitely steaks on the grill! :thumbsup2

I grill all year. Last year I had to shovel 30 inches or so of snow to dig out the grill. Nothing like bringing 4 sizzling steaks from outside into the kitchen and waving them under the family's noses to bring a little summer into the dog days of winter.

I'd rather run outside in the cold for 5 minutes to grill up 4 steaks than spend time over a stove for an hour or more like my wife does.

I love homemade bean dishes. What's the recipe for your pinto beans, if you don't mind sharing? Not much better than a bowl of bean soup, baked beans etc...on a cold day!

On cold days I love: Chili, potato and corn chowder, homemade chicken soup, chicken and dumplings, vegetable beef soup, beef stew, pot roast, and mac and cheese.

Mine is simple just add ham with meat and cook the beans all day.

I am frying some catfish and then having tater tots and veggies.

Love meatloaf, however I need a better recipe. Yum.

Enchiladas sound so good.

Add hot sauce and cole slaw with the fried catfish and called it a meal.

What do cook on cold day?

Today we having meatloaf, mashed potatoes ,peas, and home made gravy.

Tomorrow the kids ask if cold have homemade chili.

Did mention that is no school tomorrow because of snow.

Home made soup, chili, and that is about it!:confused3

I made a pot of hamburger/vegetable soup yesterday morning for DH and I. With the wind chill it was like 13 below zero. Love making soup in the winter.

If I have a ham bone in the freezer, split pea soup!

Saturday I made beef and noodles - stew meat, a can of French onion soup, can of cream of mushroom, can of mushrooms, and 1/2 cup of cooking wine in a crock pot. Serve over noodles. Mmmm.
