What do Conch Fritters taste like?!?!?!?!

I know they are a Florida specialty, but what do they taste like? Comparable to fried clams? I want to try them, but I have no reference point! LOL!

I have never had them either. I would assume they are like clamcakes/frritters(and not fried clams). which means mostly a fried dought with little(or large) chunks of konk in them. does anywhere at disney sell them? I havent seen em, but may try one.

I had some in the Bahamas many years ago. They tasted like deep fried anything else.

I personally didn't care for them (at least at Olivia's) and I love fried clams and scallops...I don't like oysters.

They were a little "chewy" and not as "strong" as an oyster..but "fishier" than clams or scallops. Most folks really like them.

Order them and give them a try, you won't know if you like them otherwise. BTW, Olivia's also serve conch chowder, it is a tomato based chowder, I don't care for it either. But I really don't like any tomato based chowders.

They are really a bahamian specialty. They should not taste like fish at all. Conch can be tuff but not if prepared properly. Usually the conch is chopped and put in corn meal batter like a hush puppy but a tad bit spicy. It's hard to find good ones but they can be excellent. The Atlantis resort on Paradise Isle Nassau does a great job with them and the Chica Lodge in Islamorada used to do a great job on them as well.

I saw them on the Olivia's menu, and just finished reading a book set in Key West where everyone was eating these things!

We had them when we were in Key West, and I was surprised by them. I was expecting something flat like a pancake, but they look exactly like a hush puppy and taste quite similar with a slight fish taste. I just dipped them in ketchup or tartar sause, and thought they were very good.

For anyone going to the Keys I would highly reccomend the Islamorada Fish Co. in Islamorada as a great spot to eat. I think they have a web site you can order seafood from as well. The place is AWESOME ! Average basket is about $10. Nothing fancy, just plastic deck chairs, great food and cold bear. It's not uncommon to have the fish boats pull right up to the dock your eating on with a load of fresh fish. The yellowtail basket is my favorite but the cocunut shrimp and Stone crabs are not to be missed as well. One of the best restaurants in the keys and it's also a best kept secret and a best value. Very hard to beat for casual dining. Isn't everything the keys supposed to be casual ? I can't remember if they serve conch fritters but they are right next to Bass Pro Shops World Wide Sportsman. It's a fun place to walk into just to see the sister ship to Ernest Hemingway's "Pilar" . You can climb on board and the huge fish tanks are pretty cool as well. If you charter a yacht for the day and bring back fish they will cook it for you. It's one of the coolest spots I know. The Islamoarda bakery makes Wicked good cinnamon rolls. 1 will feed a family of 4 !

I agree with the hush puppies but spicier. Usually they mince the conch, mix in some chopped onion and corn meal. Fried conch reminds me of fried clams. Both are excellent.

We had conch fritters at OKW last January,and they were awful.I live in Nova Scotia where we have lots of good seafooed,and these were like nothing I've had before,or wish to have again.........So,if staying at OKW and trying them,think twice......
We're going back again in '05,and guess what I won't be having?Looking forward to eating at Olivia's....

I will be trying them in a couple of weeks, as well as the Conch chowder. I love Manhattan clam chowder as well as New England so I will probably like the tomato based chowder. I have never had fried clams or scallops but i love all fis except shrimp. I can tolerate it but it is not a choice i would make if given one. Do these taste anything like shrimp? If not I will probably love them since i have a sickening affinity for anything fried!!

Conch is not at all like shrimp. I really like conch chowder. While I have never seen it in the states as all conch here is imported ( frozen), in the bahamas you can find fresh fried conch and it is VERY good. Clams are the closest comparrison but Conch is Conch and if fresh is really even more mild than a fresh clam.
