I know the boards are buzzing with new threads about the pin codes for free upgrades, but I have a question. I posted it in a new thread and it didn't get answered. I think people are too excited to read through, so here is a new thread.

Why is Disney doing this?? Do you think they are doing this and then going to re-sell all those value rooms? Seems like an awful lot of people got pins to just be from over-booking. Especially since final payment isn't due on many of them so not "Set in stone" so-to-speak??

How will this affect crowding in the parks?

This probably means that the Values are at least fully booked if not overbooked, meanwhile SSR & OKW have tons of availabilty (as usual), so if people take the upgrade they can resell more Value rooms, and the people who were upgraded are getting to "try out" a DVC resort, meaning Disney hopes that some will one day consider buying into DVC.

It means I will be obsessively checking my email at work all day today, and maybe tomorrow. LOL!

Congrats to everyone who got the upgrades! I would be fun to try out a DVC resort.

It means DVC sales and reservations are still soft (2nd quarter earnings indicated DVC sales were down).

This apparently coincides with some sort of promo for DVC referrals as well....offered to DVC owners.

It also means that Saratoga Springs and OKW have plenty of available rooms but Value reservations may be filling up. Disney is going to....

1.) Upgrade people from crowded resorts - make them happy -- maybe someone will bite on a DVC ownership

2.) Open up more Value Reservations to sell

3.) Fill up 2 resorts which are chronically low-occupancy.

Simple yield management - do whatever works to fill rooms. If you cannot fill a $200 room....upgrade someone (make them happy) and sell the room you CAN sell - another time....just get those butts in as many beds as possible.

I did not get a code, but I called for another reason and just mentioned the codes and the nice lady told me that the marketing department didn't realize how popular this would be. Duh!!!

She also told me that the folks who are just now reading their email MAY be out of luck because she hasn't been able to get the dates for those folks.

She said calls started at 7:00 am EST and it has been no-stop.

:sad2:

Maybe something else will pop up for those who didn't get a code.

It means they overbooked and want to move people to resorts with chronically lower occupancy

When All-Star Sports first opened, there were only 4 buildings open for guests - I think it was basketball and Surfs Up. We were booked there for 2 nights before checking in at our DVC resort, but got upgraded at that time to POFQ because Sports was over-booked. As Sports was the first value WDW opened, this did not come as much of a surprise. So it does happen. At that time, there was not the DVC inventory to move folks over there.

If I were on Disney Payroll (and I am not :sad2:), I would:

Give away moderates to families booked in values now..
Get more families into values (taking advantage of free DDP)
Next time the upgraded families go to WDW they will look into moderates with DDP
Next time value families go to WDW they will get the DDP

Win Win for WDW and resort guests :thumbsup2

I think Disney trying to sell DVC rooms. Right now they have AKV, BLT, GCV, and Hawaii 2011. DVC members also received an email stating friends can stay at a OKW or SSR resort for $199 a night from 08/30/09 to 10/1/09 with a tour. If you can afford it, it's worth buying.

I wish they would up grade me from POR to the Poly! :lmao:

I wish they would upgrade me from CSR to any Deluxe. I'm not picky.:rotfl: I orignially had AS Sports booked but decided I wanted to stay at a nicer resort so switched to CSR a few months ago. I wish now I had stayed put and took my chances getting upgraded to CSR or OKW.:rotfl:

I need to check my email like right now....that's all it means to me

I think it means they have rooms to spare at OKW and SSR and are hoping to sell a few DVC's by welcoming people who wouldn't ordinarily try them.

It means they overbooked and want to move people to resorts with chronically lower occupancy

I don't think this is true, because after all the chaos yesterday there was availability at POP and other values in weeks that there had been none. They didn't just move "over booked" parties, they are re-selling those rooms.

My most important question from original post:

How will this affect crowding??? Anyone know from last time they did a similar promo?

After staying at the OKW we realized it is more of a mod than a deluxe...I would be happy with the switch if I was in a value but turn it down if I was in a mod

I think that the value resorts are filling up & people don't want to spend on mods-so Disney will upgrade the people w/ reservations at the values to open up more value room availability. JMO!

What do all these free upgrades mean? It means a bunch of DVC owners who are using their points to stay at OKW or SSR will be getting ticked-off!
