What did you buy for your trip?

It's almost time for me to fly out to Orlando, and I find it hard NOT to buy things.... Should I get a new suitcase? Clothes? Camera? Laptop? iPad?

What did you buy for your trip, and what did you actually use? And for the photography people out there.... What focal length worked best for you? 24-70mm? Maybe a 24-240mm? Longer? Wider?

Dollar store rain ponchos - indispensable and good for water rides too.

YES! I cannot recommend this enough. On NYE we spent something insane like $20-30 on two Disney ponchos and while nice, it stunk to spend so much on them. For June we bought them at a sporting goods store, 6 disposable ones for $6. I personally tend to buy travel size toiletries because coming home, I have more room for any purchases I might make. Also, buy sunscreen, bug spray, chapstick with SPF at home because in the parks it's either completely jacked up in price or hard to find. I left my lip balm at the hotel accidentally and it took me literally hours to find any in Epcot, which I found in China (sideote: the lip balm with the panda on it is seriously the best ever!).

Regarding the other stuff you listed I think that is totally up to what you think you need. Personally I can't imagine buying a new iPad or laptop just to go to Disney but if you think it will be necessary for your trip, go for it. I do recommend testing your footwear to see if you think it'll be good for the parks, and if not buying a better pair because shoes will ruin your trip if they are bad! I have pretty sturdy luggage, a nice camera, lots of clothing, etc so in the end I really didn't buy any of that.

Focal length varies by what you are shooting. I usually keep my 24-105 f/4 on the camera. But if I want to shoot low light things, I'll switch to a 24-70 f/2.8. I'm shooting full frame though. If you have crop sensor, you would probably want something wider. Wider is always better at Disney.

We have a huge bag of crap that we bought for our trip, mostly first aid supplies for our feet, since we both suffer from blisters and such. We also bought Britta bottles, plastic baggies to hold wet ponchos and all (they really come in handy), and lots of chewing gum since WDW doesn't sell it. Hand sanitizer, tissues, ibuprofen, wet wipes, etc.

We haven't been in 6 years and it's our first time for my 5 year old daughter. We bought quite a few new things: Ponchos, Brita water bottles, new carry on suitcase, external battery (really needed one anyway), autograph book (birthday gift), travel liquid containers.

We desperately needed upgrades on some old travel items. It's so nice to have time and money to travel again! :D

Last trip, I bought a cross-body bag that I will use again this trip and some hot weather clothes (we don't need too much in the way of those living in the PNW - lol).

For this next trip, I will be bringing a third (new, but broken in) set of shoes, more skirts than shorts/pedal pushers, and a second bathing suit. Oh,and always new sunblock.

I always buy some clothes for everyone. And bathing suits if needed.

I buy all of our toilitries just for the trip and have it packed. I hate having to pack my already wet shampoo and conditioner bottle the day of, trying to remember to pack my deodorant and hair products after I use them, etc. It's just easier for me to have them bought and packed.

This past trip we also bought a new camera a few months before. We were in the market for one and decided to do it before the trip. My grandmother bought DD a new luggage just for her. It was a gift.

I bought a new carry-on wheeled luggage. The zipper on my old one broke so I had to get one. Also bought toiletries, waters and a few snacks (shipped via Prime Pantry to resort). Got DS (4) some new Disney shirts for his birthday, knowing we'd be bringing them on the trip. And, DD got me a new pair of Nike sneakers, which I would have bought for myself for the trip if she hadn't already gotten them for me :)

We did get a new camera, but it was a combination wedding/birthday gift from DH's parents to us. Our camera was 8 years old and not great quality. I wanted a new camera so that way I wouldn't run down the battery on my phone taking pictures, but honestly, I still took more pictures on my phone than anything else.

Toothbrushes since I didn't feel like lugging our electric ones with their charger. Amazingly it was the only thing we needed!

Light up Minnie ears, Christmas shirts, a tiny tree for our room and stuff to decorate our windows, dollar tree ponchos are a must!

I just bought new luggage during a Black Friday sale. Ours has been limping along for quite a few trips. Plus dh is going to Germany in April, so it wasn't just for this trip.

We have a Disney box of things that we take on each trip. Disposable ponchos, pin lanyards, stuff like that. I make new Epcot passports and autograph books for each trip. This trip I'm making custom Mickey ears for the kids.

Hand sanitizer and cold medicine this time. I thought about a new pair of athletic shoes but waited too long to start looking and couldn't find any my size locally.

I've been eyeing a DSLR camera but decided to ask for that for christmas instead of buying it now so I'll have time to play with it before my next trip ( if I get it).

do you really need a new suitcase, ipad, laptop, and camera for a trip?
if you already have these things then i'd say no definitely not.

i sometimes buy new clothes like some disney themed shirts or a fresh pack of socks and underwear, or sneakers.

other than that i mostly just buy some toiletries/otc medications (if i'm in need), and a couple food items like pop tarts for breakfast in the room.

i have a disney rain poncho from a good 8 trips ago that still works just fine so i don't even buy ponchos.

i'd much rather be spending my money on souvenirs while at disney world instead of things that are not necessary to have a great time.

A couple items not mentioned... Dollar store hamper and laundry bag. The hamper is indispensable for keeping control of 5 people's dirty clothes in one room! I also bring it home and use it until it wears out. The bag is less necessary, but we have a split stay and I like to have an extra bag for dirties. Snacks... Almonds, granola bars. Never underestimate the need to feed a toddler in Disney (and a toddler mama). Stocking stuffers. We are in the World on Christmas. We won't do big presents, but stockings are easy to pack (and stuffers from home just as fun and cheaper than bought there... Plus less obvious to little eyes).

New sneakers! I have arthritic knees and I always get new sneakers a few weeks before a trip. I find bringing 2 pairs of sneakers, my new and the slightly older pair to be the key to my success in never getting blisters and keeping the knee pain kind of in check. Timing wise, I will stretch out a pair (like, right now I'm due for a new pair, but, I'll wait until January to prep for my Feb trip) if I'm trying to save a few bucks. I buy new sneakers about once a year regardless.

I also bought a bunch of first aid things our first trip, and didn't need most of it. Ponchos, absolutely. I have yet to use them, I call them my lucky ponchos now, since if I bring them, it won't rain!

I did get a new tinkerbelle shirt for my girls trip this Sept, that was a fun splurge. A dollar store hamper was a must, and we started using it while tent camping, too.

I buy a buncha groceries and a box of good wine to put in the checked bag. (before anyone freaks, yes, I triple bagged it, no it didn't leak, and one would have to be an idiot to not know to wrap up their wine properly).

Other than the sneakers, which I get at fleet feet for a pretty penny and consider a medical need rather than a want, there isn't much I buy. This is still you, just on vacation. You'll look great in pictures with your favorite clothes on, no need to buy new. A laptop wouldn't be used much, I wouldn't bother. A concierge at your resort can handle the same things you would turn to your laptop for. Your luggage is FINE!! If it looks a little rough, people would just blame the airline handling being too rough. I am comfortable in my own skin and with my sometimes older things, so maybe that's the reason why I didn't feel judged while at Disney. Or, possibly, everyone is too busy enjoying the magic to judge other's things. Just show up as you are and have an amazing time. Save that money on the new stuff and put it toward your next trip!
