What did you bake today ? OK if not from scratch

Saw these witch brooms in a magazine and made them with the grandkids this weekend. They are assembled, not baked lol. Simple though, just two ingredients, mini peanut butter cups and pretzel sticks. On the same plate are Oreo spiders but I didn't like how they came out. The licorice legs were a pain to work with and kept falling off.

And I also made them mummy hot dogs that I saw in the same magazine. Some of their eyes fell off in the oven so I told the kids they were cyclops mummies. The magazine had mustard dot eyes but they don't like mustard.

I made this a few days ago with my 6 year old niece, a traditional Irish apple tart. Making pastry and apple tarts was one of the first things I learned how to cook with my grandma and now I'm teaching my niece.

:thumbsup2 Nice - that's what we call apple pie and it's certainly a fall and winter classic. Fall apples are resplendent here right now and I had 35lbs. delivered straight from the orchards of the BC Okanagan a week ago. Every year I get them and find a new recipe to try in quantity, which I then give away. This year was an apple cake with a custard-y texture. I think it was a winner. (Not my picture but mine did turn out looking just like this.)

I made a squash, caramelized onion and cheese galette; it called for Fontina but that isn't easily found here so I used Gruyere. It was really, really good. I also added thyme and rosemary because I had some and I figured that those herbs go well with sage (which is called for in the recipe).

Also, Hallowe'en cupcakes for when I go into the office tomorrow.

I baked meatloaf last night.

I went shopping yesterday and got all the ingredients I need for the kids to start the holiday baking.
It will start Wednesday during baking class.
I need to make more room in my freezer!! The cookies are coming!!

Made a Banana Bread yesterday. Family requested chocolate chips instead of walnuts this time.
I'm with your family!

I can enjoy walnuts if they're toasted and sprinkled over a salad or something, but in baked goods they're disappointing little surprises.

Plus, chocolate chip banana bread is just awesome whether or not the chocolate is replacing something else.

The first time I saw those pans was on Oprah—I think it might have been one of her Favorite Things one year. She was raving about all the edges and up until that point I never knew there were people that preferred that part. In my house the edges are always last to go and I think that was true in the house I grew up in as well. Everyone wants the center pieces—the fewer edges the better.
I ONLY eat the edges and give away all the rest to anyone who wants. I purposely make brownies often for the edges. The crispier the better. Same with my Apricot Bars. Only edges. 8-)

Not baked, exactly, but I made Rice Krispie Treats for DS yesterday. They were well-received.

And I tried a new lower-carb cookie for DH the other day - a recipe with pumpkin and almond flour. I thought they were just OK.

We're living in hotels for the next week or so as we finish up a trip to visit my husband's dad. The hotel we're staying in now has Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches in a fridge as part of their free breakfast, and I must say, I'm pretty happy with my preparation: deconstruct the sandwich and toast the English muffin, lighly butter both sides. Microwave the insides, cheese up, on medium-high power till hot, then put it all back together. Comes out pretty good, and much better than just nuking it. :)

I did a marble bundt cake yesterday and today I'll do banana cream pie, a batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and some sort of muffins, along with 4 or 5 family-sized dinner entrees. They're to go to the household of a dear friend who's just undergone extensive cancer surgery and it's touch-and-go. :sad1:
