What did people take to help with motion sickness

My husband is prone to motion sickness...I really don't want him to miss out on so many things because of motion sickness...I know what might work for one person may not work for the next...I have read about a patch but some of the side effects sound brutal. There are so many simulation rides.

I haven't been yet, but I plan on taking Bonine. I go down to the US just for it when I have a cruise planned (It's not available in Canada). I take it the night before a cruise and keep taking it each night. It's non-drowsy but I don't have any problems falling asleep after taking it. I keep taking it each night and even a night or two after and I have been fine (no sea legs).

I have tried both the name brand and the Safeway brand. No differences that I could tell. I was warned on the Dis not to chew them (some are chewable) as they taste gross.

I use one of those battery operated wrist bands that give out the electrical impulses. It's a bit expensive (around $75) but I've been using the same one for 12+ years, so have really gotten good value from it. I think there are some cheaper versions but their batteries aren't replaceable like with mine. From the very first time I used it on an airplane I knew I'd found a non-medication way to deal with motion sickness. I don't know if it works for everybody but my brother and sister have also borrowed it and been very happy with the results.

Dramamine for me. Some people say it makes them drowsy but it's never had that effect on me, and I am someone who gets completely knocked out if I take Benadryl or any other "may cause drowsiness" medication, lol. But everyone is different.

The Scopolamine patches are awesome too but on a hot day it can just be a little irritating, for me anyway. And I swear I feel dehydrated when I wear one but that could just be coincidence or something.

Never tried Seabands but I'm interested to hear from those who have. I'm thinking about trying them for my upcoming trip.

I love rides but without meds they do not love me!

Here is what I do - I take a meclizine (brand name Bonine) the night before I go to the parks and then I take one an hour before we go to the parks. Works like a charm! I can ride pretty much anything with no issues. I do avoid any kind of spinning rides though.

Bonine seems to work best for me with FJ if I'm not taking other meds for vertigo. Except Simpsons. Nothing helps me with that one.

Sea bands have never worked for me or anyone I know........tried them on a few occasions including one actually at sea.......that didn't go well at all..........

But try everything you can and see what works for you.

One tiny meclizine for me each morning before rides and I feel like I'm young again.

Lol........sounds ideal doesn't it!!!

Does it make you tired at all and do you you take some the night before, I've seen some folks say they take it like that too??

Ginger! I get ginger pills from GNC, but real ginger-containing foods also work.

I get motion sickness BADLY. I tried bonine and Dramamine and no help. I almost hurled on Forbidden Journey. Next trip, my doctor prescribed me a patch I wore behind my ear (can't think of name though!). I realized rides weren't affecting me. So, I decided to try to Forbidden Journey. Didn't bother me at all. I was so excited coming off the ride that I was ok, I was jumping up and down like a little girl.... and the guy next to me puked. I felt to bad for him!

I took Dramamine last Oct and rode Forbidden Journey and Despicable Me among other things....I have thrown up on rides before, but I loved FJ and DM....Fantastic fun!

Never tried it the night before. I figure take it when I need it most. I missed a dose last year at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. BIG MISTAKE. Did five of the coasters at rope drop and laid down right on the sidewalk.

Just being 'in my system' is not enough anymore. Same with the allergy pill in the morning. I'm not going for a hike in the woods from 11pm till 6am. Wake up, coffee on, take pills, ride the rides!

The next day at Busch Gardens, same routine, but with a morning meclizine, wonderfully fun time. :woohoo:

For me the Dramamine does cause drowsiness. The meclizine does not.

Same with Benadryl vs. loratadine. If I am having trouble at the end of the day, take the drowsy version and call it a night. Sleep off the side effects by the next day. Then pop the non-drowsy alternative.

Sea bands work great for me. I worked on a tiny cruise ship for 6 months despite having issues with motion sickness and they worked amazingly well. For rides, there is still the rare ride I can't handle - like Storm Force Accelerator. But I can handle rides like Forbidden Journey as long as I have my sea bands on.

Lol.......I'm only laughing cos I've been there too........practically on the sidewalk after Simpsons.........

good you found something that works.........

Love ginger!!!!

Use it for everything........ginger tabs or even ginger candy work so well if you do get that nauseous feeling after some rides........

I have trouble with Dramamine but I sometimes need it. They knock me out cold. When we are going to be out on a boat, I take a pill the night before. It doesn't cover me the entire next day but it is much better than the alternative. :crazy2: I will have to try it for the rides. Maybe half a pill the night before.

I'm glad to find this thread! I'm also quite nervous about the motion sickness from all the 3D rides. For me, it's less about the motion itself, and more about the VISUAL aspect, combined with the movement. My doctor gave us the scopolamine patches, but our ped said to NOT use them. Just avoid those rides. I told the nurse "but that's ALL of them at Universal!" Doc said they often make people very sleepy. Anyone had that reaction with the patches? FYI -- Non-drowsy Dramamine is also meclizine, same med that is in Bonine and Antivert. So if you can't find Bonine, try that.

So -- here's the question. For those of you who are having good results with these remedies -- are you a person who is more sickened by the motion itself? Or the visual part of it? I'd sure love to think that we can ride FJ and Spiderman and Men in Black and such.

We did several rounds of Star Tours and everyone was OK -- except near the end of the day, when I had to close my eyes. Sounds like FJ is in a motion-sickness class all by itself.

I used a Scopolamine patch a few times when going through chemo. I thought it was great for preventing nausea and did not notice it making me drowsy at all. Just felt dehydrated at times while wearing it.
