What Cook Books are good for a Beginner?

Hi all!

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, comprehensive cookbook for me--I'm an inexperienced cook who is looking for a book to help me get started. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

I received a copy of this when I got married at 18, and it taught me how to do everything. It's old, but the recipes are wonderful.

the Better Homes and Garden cook book is GREAT.

Between the Better Homes and Gardens and the Betty Crocker cook books you have every thing you need for basic cooking.

I was given the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook when I left home. I really like it because it has lots of pictures in it, so you can see what each stage is supposed to look like.

I now own both the US and the British versions, and they are both excellent.

The Joy of Cooking has everything you'll need to know about anything you want to cook.

My favorite new (2001 - I think) comprehensive cookbook is:

How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman

(he writes the Minimalist Cook article in the New York Times)


It is filled with fantastic easy recipes and many variations as well that are great for cooking for 2 or a crowd.

LOL it's one of mine too. The other one I always go back to is the 1987 edition of The Southern Living Cookbook. It is not the anual book with the recipes from that yrs magazines.

Well then your #1 pick I dont' have. It was the southern living one that I have.
Sounds like a good cook book. I'll have to get it (I'll really probably get it if I buy 1 more cook book LOL)


anyway some of my favorite cook books are comunity cook books (churches, ladies clubs, local library etc)

The only cook book I use is Joy of Cooking. I don't cook much but it tells me how to do basics or complicated things if I need them. I really like that it goes into details about basic things because that is usually what I need.
