Was going to make some for a friend. I used Toll House morsels last year. Was alright...but didn't taste THAT great.

What are some other kinds of chocolate I could use. Preferable something I could find at Wal-Mart or the typical grocery store.

Thanks!!

Almond Bark. Found on the baking aisle of your grocery store. It comes in white (vanilla) and chocolate. I've used it for years to dip pretzels, peanut butter balls, cherries, etc. in and it always turns out great!

Almond bark does work well but I would be tempted to try hersey's chocolate bars. I love their milk chocolate.

I also like the wilson's chocolate, the ones that look like big hershey's kisses. They melt really smooth. I always had problems melting the tollhouse for some reason.

I always use the almond bark for mine too however I do not use the choc flavored one - I melt Nestle Toll House Semi Sweet Chips with the Vanilla Almond Bark for a much better choc flavor :flower:

Mmmmmmmm....chocolate!

Does almond bark have almonds? I'm allergic to nuts.

No it doesn't but here are the ingrediants on mine :
Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil, WHey Powder, Soy Lecithin and artifical flavor.
This product contains soy and milk products.
This package was packaged in a facility that handles milk and peanuts.

Hope that helps.

I have always thought these are the best for doing pretzles. Plus it dries nice and hard.

I attempted DIPPED pretzles one year...oy what a mess! This year - it's pretzles with DRIZZLED chocolate over them! heheheh

Here's the trick to melting the Hershey's morsal's, add some light cream in as your melting them. They'll be rich and creamy that way.

I used the Giradelli's chips White and milk Chocolate and they were yummy!

I use Ghiradelli's baking chocolate...

Chocolate chips are notorious for NOT melting--they make them that way so they will stay intact during the cooking baking process.

I make some shortbread sticks that are dipped and then drizzled with chocolate. The recipe calls for the mini chocolate chips (Hershey's) and then you add a teaspoon of Crisco shortening to it and then they melt really well. Then when it cools it is very firm. I think Anne's suggestions for the cream works on the same principle.

Don't chocolate chips have some parafin (or something like that) in them to help keep their shape? Look in the cake/candy making section of WalMart, Michaels, or AC Moore type place.... I think Wilton makes chocolate specifically for candy making that melts well. It's in a bag and not too expensive as I recall.

::yes:: ::yes:: Very creamy!

It's available in all the stores in my small town.

My DD16 found a recipie in 17 magazine for mini pretzels dipped in chocolate....
I read sinkerbelles post about a mess..has anyone made these with success...any good tips?
My DD is so excited to try and make these for friends...I don't want ot discourage her..but I don't need a huge ,disaster project at this point either!!

How far in advance can you make these and how are they best stored?

Any advice welcome...Carol

I am making chocolate covered pretzels this year. I bought Hershey's Big Bars to melt as well as some Ghiradelli chocolate. The kids and I will be making them tomorrow. We plan to dip about two-thirds of the pretzel and then drizzle dark and white chocolate over the milk chocolate on the pretzels. For some, we've bought Nestle crunch, mini M&M's, Reese's pieces and cookies and creme bars to break up and roll the freshly dipped pretzels into. As well as sprinkles and nuts. I'd like to do carmel but I've never melted carmel before and I am a little leary. I've dipped pretzel logs before and it can be somewhat messy but certainly not a huge mess. I found the trick to put them on a cookie sheet and put them into the freezer for a few minutes to really set up.

Thanks so who recommended Almond Bark. I just opened the package to make some coating for my pretzels and it smells great! And it was cheap too!

Two questions, I wanted white chocolate but could only find vanilla. Will that taste ok on my pretzels?

Secondly, how long will my pretzels last? I'm giving most away this weekend but want to take some to my friends over New Years. Will this batch last or should I do it again next week? I'm doing both small pretzels and larger rods.

Thanks!

Al - they last, at best, 3 days IMO..and vanilla would be fine. (heck - I'm using red and green colored vanilla flavored melting chips)

FYI - don't STORE these in the freezer/fridge. once you take them out...the chocolate (if it's a dark color) starts to turn white.

ETA- I dont' even cool mine in the fridge...i just leave them on the counter for a while to cool
