My dgs won the bet. He wants an adult western novel(he's really proud that he reads chapter books). He is 7 reads above his grade level but no more than 5th grade level. Can you suggest a book that will not disappoint him but not be too adult in topic. :wave2:

My DS 10 loved Spy Cat. Got lots of great suggestions for other books here. Hope you find something that inspires his imagination. :)

Isn't there a book called "how to eat fried worms"?

Sounds like a perfect boy book. :rotfl2:

If he likes westerns he should look for Louis Lamour....I loved his one novel the last breed ...but it wasn't a western....It was about a pilot shot down over Russia and they are trying to track him down but he is part Indian and has the skills to survive....

When I taught 4th grade they liked the Henry Huggins books (Beverly Clearly) and the Phantom Tollbooth. Then there is always the Mark Twain books, Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn. They are a little difficult, but good reading.

My DS is 8 and he loves the Magic Tree House Books, you can't go wrong with any of these books in the series.

How about Hank the Cowdog? My kids loved those books.

How about some sort of treasury of classic American tales? Or classic cowboy stories?

Hank is very cute. I'll try to think of some more and post later.

There was a great book in my daughters 2nd grade class called Hola Coyote.. which was a chapter book. I saw it in the classroom.

There are some chapter Scooby Doo ones where they go western. I know my kids have a few.

Matt Christopher has sports books, there may be some that have to do with western sports like rodeo, or horses.

Pony Pals is more girly, but is Western-y.. thats a series.

Huck Finn has the racial n word in it. Most kids would not understand that Huck Finn is written vernacullarly (sp?), so it is not perfect English, plus with the N word, it is tough going.

My sister loves all the magic tree house books! They are a good choice

From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler is an excellent book that I enjoyed when I was younger. It's not a western, but very good! My sister is reading it to her class right now. There is a also a movie that is good!
It's awesome that your son loves to read! I did at that age too, I still enjoy reading, but rarely have time!!

That was such a good book!

What about Harry Potter? Very good storytelling in there. Also, Peter Pan is a good book to read, and thick, too - lots of adventures in that book.

There's also the old classic series - Hardy Boys.

You might want to consider going to a Borders or Barnes & Noble & let him browse & see what appeals to him.

I would reccomend CRASH by Jerry Spennelli it is a great book about a football player. I really also liked Hatchet, brians winter, brians return, my side of the mountain ,the other side of the mountain and frightfulls mountain.

my kids always like the box car children at that age. DDs class just finished Lemony Snickets (sp) and they really enjoyed that too!

Great suggestions. I am off to the book store today with my list to ck out. I'll post later and let you know what I find. Thanx

No westerns on the shelf. So I went with How to eat Fried worms. :rotfl2:
