when your coworker's 19yo daughter is in a hospital in a medically induced coma?

Some of you are aware my coworkers is a bit of a loon...she has some good stories to tell, some of them tall....LOL..But she has been good to me, and we get along pretty well...hey its what happens when 2 ppl stuck in a room together 8+hrs a day with no windows..LOL..

So basically, her daughter, who works at a popular place in Orlando, was injured on the job 2 nights ago. Seriously so. She was found unconscious losing a LOT of blood. She was so seriously wounded she was airlifted to a hospital in Gainesville. She nicked the major artery in her leg, and may lose her foot to crush damage. No one knows what happened...

She missed work yesterday(as to be expected) as her daughter was in surgery to repair the artery. They kept her medically out to further evaluate her. She came to work today. As she recounted what happened, she broke down in tears numerous times. She said she just wanted her kid back the way she was when she sent her to work. We did out best to be strong for her...tried to get her to laugh a bit, and it worked...but I am at a loss...

Her daughter is not out of the woods yet...she was in surgery again today as they found a bleed. Her 13yo sister has already donated blood to her 2x as she is the only family member who safely can right now. To top this whole thing off, her workplace has not even contacted her to find anything out, or anything at all...:sad2:

I am not giving the name of the employer, as it is not my place, but I am REALLY wanting to make an anonymous tip to the press...

So if you have any prayers to send, please direct some to Gainesville for this poor girl.

Just keep doing what you are doing - listening and trying to give her a laugh to distract her for a few minutes. Maybe you could also try to organize a food supply if she has other family members at home (or to keep her own strength up)

Prayers for your friend, her daughter and their entire family :grouphug:

Exactly this I will add my prayers too

It's so good you can be there to support her, as you obviously know just what to do. Positive vibes being sent to all of you.

How about getting some people from work to go donate blood? The blood banks can always use blood and it would help people feel like they are doing something.

If she has younger kids people offering to do chauffeuring them to school or activities, If she has pets offering to help care for them. These are things that have to get done and are hard to coordinate while running to a hospital in another city.

Same here..

If she's in tomorrow, maybe you could take her out to lunch? Something that might distract her for a bit?

That's hard.. Very, very hard..:(

I have a 19yodd and a 13yodd. The thought of my oldest going through something like this would be overwhelming. I don't think there is anything you can "say". Just be there for her.

:hug::hug::hug::hug:

That's so very sad. I second the idea to encourage people to donate blood in her name. The blood won't go to her but it increases the available pool which helps indirectly. Also it's good karma.

Lots of people have made great suggestions, good for you for being a good friend. I wouldn't tip off the press, I would let the family figure that one out. Don't know what your system is for workplace injury claims but who knows if the media getting involved with affect the legal battle that is surely to come.

Did you try googling the girls name? Perhaps something has been said to the press already? Maybe the police have asked for silence on this?

You could contact the liaison @ the police dept?

I wonder why the employer hasn't contacted the family?

I second the blood drive thing. Not sure how big your company is, but that would be a place to start. If she belongs to a church, maybe you could help get it going there. Even blood of all types can be donated in this girls name.

Maybe people within the company can donate a day of their sick leave for this woman?

That's really tough. I'm adding her to my prayers, too.

You don't have to say anything. Just being there to Listen is what will really help.

Hugs and prayers sent your way.

Wow..they let a 13 year old donate blood twice in two days? That's extraordinarily unusual. That's what the Red Cross blood bank is for.
All you can do is to be there for your friend..and maybe encourage your co-workers to donate blood to Red Cross.
As to an anonymous tip to the papers..for what reason? Unless she has missed a couple of work days or shifts, her employer may not even know what's going on; or may not be aware of the seriousness of the injury.

This happened AT WORK....3 coworkers, just kids themselves found her, called First Aid, who then called 911...

Took them an hour and a half to get her from her work location, to the helicopter..trust me, THEY KNOW

That's so sad. She sounds like she is young and healthy so she has an excellent chance of recovering.

As to the 13 year old's blood donation, I'm also surprised. To donate at my hospital takes about 2 weeks from the time of donation till it's cleared for use. You can only donate for yourself or relative for a prescheduled elective surgery.

I bet her company isn't calling because they're investigating what happened.

I agree with others who have posted....just listen and be there for her. A blood drive might be a great idea, esp since during the summer months blood banks supply goes way down....you would not only be helping her daughter, but others as well.

Not sure of your relationship with coworker, but could you cook dinner for her and her family, or organize others at work to drop stuff off. I'm sure it will appreciated as with spending time at the hospital, I doubt there is much time to cook!

Just curious as you mentioned that the coworkers were also kids.
this wouldn't be a pretty well known bakery/deli type place with the word Bread in its name would it?

I do have a reason for asking....

No....its a theme park...

A small update...

Her daughter is still in a medically induced coma...She has had some minor head trauma, and they had to drill a hole to relieve some pressure and repair a bleed that came up. They still do not know if she will loose her foot yet. They have it in an air cast and waiting to see if circulation is still working.

As for the employer, she did get contact...from the lawyers. They asked for her lawyer info..So she was in the process of getting one yesterday. She still has no clue what happened..

Please keep them in your prayers..My coworker is spending the weekend in Gainsville, so I wont know anymore till Monday...

How awful. Prayers said for this poor family. They must be besides themselves with worry.

I'm sure any help you can extend to this family will be greatly appreciated whether it be getting co-workers to donate blood, to setting up a cooked meal program for the family, etc.

She has been asking everyone at work what there blood type is and I actually made a donation for her, as I matched her blood type. She was grateful.

Luckily her family is doing OK. She has her MIL and FIL living with here, and her DH is a pysichans assistant for a cardiologist so he spends days in Gainsville and my coworker takes over for the night shift. She is running on little sleep though, as its a 2hrs drive to Gainsville. She doesnt NEED to work as she has been very lucky in her career..this is just a hold over job for now..but she just comes in to keep her mind semi off the issues.
