What can you do for a broken toe?

Cuz I think I have one. The other night, I got up to go to the bathroom and as I was walking out, I managed to kick the doorframe with my foot. I must've kicked it REALLY REALLY hard because I immediately felt an intense pain in my toes and was tearing up because it hurt so bad. The third toe got it the worst I think..it's two days and it's STILL a little swollen and hurts like a motherbugger. :(

How can you even TELL if a toe is broken? Would it swell horrendously and turn purple or what? All I know is that my middle toe on my right foot is really, really sore and somewhat swollen. I've been taking ExtraStrength Tyelenol and it seems to help somewhat but man...does that booger ever HURT!

There's really not much the doctors can do. Try keeping it elevated. Ice for the first 48 hours (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) is also helpful. After 48 hours try warm soaks. Stay off your feet as much as possible. If you can tolerate Aspirin, use that instead of Tylenol. It works on inflamation better.

I've broken 2 toes and it does hurt A LOT! Good luck. :D

Ouch! I've broken my toe before (see my tag?) and it really, really hurt. All the doctor did for me was tape it and tell me not to wear my shoes until it was comfortable to do so. You could go get an x-ray if you think you need it, but you could just tape it yourself, too.

I did the same thing back in November. It really hurt and it turned purple! It stayed swollen for almost 2 weeks.

There's not a whole lot you can do except ice it and keep it elevated.

It was a good while before I could wear several of my favorite pairs of shoes. The only thing I could wear that didn't hurt as badly were sneakers.

Ok I'll bite...how'd you break your toe?

I've been staying off of it as much as possible, but I might have done it some harm today when we went to the DallasChild Babyfair out at Stonebriar Mall and walked around for nearly 4 hrs doing baby stuff.

I WISH I could tolerate aspirin, Virgo, but I just can't. When I was in 10th grade, I attempted suicide by swallowing close to 40 aspirin and I've been allergic ever since.

Well, the tag fairy got me pretty good by posting that as my tag, because I had said that I broke it about 9 years ago and have NEVER told a single soul how I broke it. (I was alone at the time.) I could tell you, but then I would die of embarrassment. :faint:

Oh c'mon Jolie....*poke*It couldn't be THAT bad...no worse than the totally embarrassing way I broke my elbow in 4th grade! :teeth:

Just watch, your next tag is going to say, 'Ask me how I broke my elbow!'

You may want to get an X-ray if it still hurts after a week or so. Case in point, very embarassing but I was getting into the passenger seat kind of talking, OK it was more like chastising the 5 cherubs over the miserable time they gave me at the country fair on 9/1. Well I think, I don't actually recall, cuz I was busy talking, I got the baby one caught on the floor runner, shoes were wet as it had begun raining and I took them off before getting in. Anyhow fast forward to 9/16 when I can no longer stand tha pain.....not only had I broken 2 parts of my baby toe I also fractured and broke part of my foot! First they put me on crutches with vicodin, that didn't work so well cause I had to work so next they put me in one of those ugly shoes for a few weeks. Fastforward to my good advise of going to have an X-ray if it still hurts.....I did this to the other side baby toe last week and it hurts the same way same how, so guess were I will be when I finally take the time this week?????;)

Even if it is broken, all that would be done for you medically would be tape it together to the toe next to it; in essence splinting it.

I broke my toe several years ago and the Dr. at the ER, after taping my toe, told me that the most important thing to do was to wear shoes with good support. I had come into the ER in loose deck shoes and stubbornly continued to wear them ignoring the medical advice. Not wearing supportive shoes causes you to walk incorrectly while you're favoring the broken toe. I ultimately had bad problems with my heel for a long time.

By the way, the anti-inflammatory that was recommended to me was Advil/Motrin.

If you tape your toes together, please put some cotton between the toes so the skin does not break down between the two toes. Wear a hard soled shoe for support; I got a wooden shoe for my broken toe for the support.

I've never broken any toes but my husband has.

He has one toe that points west while everyone else points east or is it viceversa. He told me he broke that toe when he was very young and is self-concious about it. Will never wear sandals. He would kill me if he knew I am posting this :p

I was under the impression that you needed to get your toes taped or the ugly boot to prevent this.

Well, now I'm beginning to think it was really just a bad jam/sprain because the swelling's gone down and it's not QUITE as sore as it was, though it's still a little tender if I squish it.

I guess I am just kind of accident prone. Around the same time I broke my toe (I think it was the day before actually), Dh and I were at Lowe's buying veggie seeds for the garden. I was coming around the end of the counter and managed to run smack into the metal holding dealie they put the plastic bags on with my left hip. Now I have a bruise the approximate size and shape of a large egg. And a small pea-sized knot in the middle of the bruise to boot!

Now *that's* embarrassing.

I mean absolutely no disrespect, but every time I see this thread I start singing

How Can You Mend a Broken Toe.........

"I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow."

la la la la la la

can't remember who sang it.

:teeth: lol you had me laughing for a bit.

I think it's one of the Bee Gee's songs.

Jolie,
I think teasing people like that is a violation of the DIS posting guidelines.. since you brought it up you have to tell us

Goodness me, Officer! I didn't know I was speeding... err... teasing! And I'm in violation to boot! What's a girl to do?? If I tell, I truly think I'll sink right through the floor and if I don't tell, well... what's the penalty for not telling?? Do you take bribes, by any chance? :flower3:

I found that lyric...it IS a BeeGees song, but it's called "How Do You Mend a Broken HEART".

And yes...you must tell us, Jolie, upon penalty of um.......:scratchin

I'll sick the Swan and Dolphin cheerleaders on you!:teeth:
