What can we eat on Christmas Day while traveling?

We are driving straight down I-95 (we live off of exit 56 in NC) on Christmas morning. Will anything be open for food? If not, what should I pack? We eat out a LOT, so I'm out of practice on how to pack food.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Waffle Houses will be open.

If you like Chinese, I think you'll see most Chinese restaurants woudl be open.

Also, restaurants inside hotels should be open.

Thanks! I really didn't think this trip plan through!!! Waffle House is yucky! :scared1:

I need to get creative with the cooler!

I would think most anything on I95 exits would be open - the usual suspects - Cracker Barrel, Ruby Tuesday, Applebees. We don't like to stop for a 'sit down' unless it's pouring rain, though, until we're done, so we usually pack a cooler full - sandwiches, fruit, cut veggies, dip, pickles, chips, cookies and lots of water.

Plan on eating at highway run rest areas. That was the one lesson we learned the hard way driving one Christmas. We didn't stop on the turnpike and once we got off EVERYTHING was closed!!! So I would keep my eyes open for any place open. Some places that are open also have short hours and aren't open late. Even at the rest areas there was limited things open. Like in one of the big areas that would have 4 or 5 different counters/restaurants only 1 would be open.

Can you pack a cooler? We like to bring cold fried chicken with us on road trips. Kids love it and it's pretty much the only time we have it. I usually just cook some of the frozen kind up the night before and store it in ziploc bags.

We usually bring some cut up veggies, ranch dressing for the kids, some cut up cheese and call it a meal.

If you want more breakfast stuff, you could make some muffins ahead of time along with some fruit or fruit cups. Bagels and cream cheese....the usual.

chicken cutlets travel well. You could even put them in baggies with BBQ sauce or marinara and bring sandwich rolls to put them on (with sliced cheese YUM! :thumbsup2)
if you have one of those containers that keeps food hot, you could keep a dish of baked ziti, stew, or some other casserole in it - just don't put it in the cooler;)
breakfast foods, cereal, yogurt, cold cuts (hey: sliced turkey, cut up veggies & potato roll - Christmas Dinner on the go!)

:wizard:safe travels...

Flying J truck stops have always had very good food. All major truck stops should be open Christmas day.

From experience and like others have posted....bring along some food for the trip. A couple years back we assumed we would find something open, but didn't except for the packaged foods at a gas station. Kids loved picking out little packages of donuts, chips, and the like.:eek: 1st time for eating those packages you can heat in the micowave (they actually weren't too bad vs the hot dog on the warmer rollers that who knows how long was there! :thumbsup2). In addition, there was tons of snow where only one lane of the interstate was open for a couple hundred miles, but had the road practically to ourselves!!.

That was one Christmas day with a lifetime of memories of meals the kids can say exactly what they ate on Christmas and remember the day of travel. :rotfl2:

We travel with hammie sandwiches!! My mom's specialty. Homemade (or store bought!) dinner rolls with a slice of butter and a slice of ham. 4 in a ziploc baggie. Packs great in a cooler, even the next day. Everyone can eat whenever.

I use the presliced Cure 81 ham, thicker slices than from the deli.

Hey, you could tell your family this is their fancy Christmas ham!
