I don't know the rules but heard a little about liquids. Can I take my shampoo and stuff like that as long as it's in my checked bag? Just no liquids on my carry on right? I do not fly so don't know the rules.

Here is a link for you! You are allowed to take liquids in your carry-ons as long as they are under the regulated limit.
Liquids in checked baggage is fine--just be careful pakcing so they do not spill and damage your things or neighbiring suitcases
The summary of the TSA link (and trusting the link over me or any other poster is an excellent idea as things change all the time lately) is that you may bring a 3-1-1 bag in your carry on for liquids. That means:
3--you get to bring liquids in marked containers which state their size that are 3.4 ounces or smaller
1--you must fit all of these liquids into a sealed 1 quart ziploc baggie (which you will need to remove from your carry on and send through security in a bin
